Last Saturday after Norm and I unloaded his new treasures, he showed me his new and improved collection displays. Of course, I took pics, and am more than happy to post them for him. I'll try to tell you what I can, but I'm sure Norm will be happy to fill in any missing information. He has some nice machines in his collection, and to start out, here's a photo of his Airways and Luxes.
Left to right on top are a Rainbow (don't know what model), and Airways, model 77, 66, and 55 (or is it 55-A?).
Second row, Electrolux models 1205, ?, G, LX, XXX, and XII.

Luxes

hygiene903's profile picture
Here's one that shows the Luxes a little better. As I said in the previous pic, left to right are a 1205, ?, G, LX, XXX, and XII. On the bottom are a Filter Queen 450 and a Lewyt model?. To the right, an Electrolux upright.

Now for the Hoovers

hygiene903's profile picture
Hard to get them all in one shot, so I did two. In front are models 300, 26, 28, 63, and a Dial-A-Matic he bought at last year's Convention. Norm will have to fill you in on the ones in the back row. I know the one on the left is a 541 Special, the one on the right is a 115, but I'm not sure about what's in between.

Norm's Hoovers, Pic 2

hygiene903's profile picture
Here we have the rest of the Hoover section. In front is the Dial-A-Matic,, 1060 Convertible, Elite, and toy Dirt Devil.
In back, Convertible 69, Dial-A-Matic, and Constellation models 87 (I think) and 82. Also a Dirt Devil hand vac and can vac can be seen. Also notice the VCCC and Convention T-shirts in the background.

Now, on to the Eurekas

hygiene903's profile picture
Norm will have to fill in the model numbers for you, as I have no idea. These are his older Eurekas and a Kirby Classic is at the left. Also, a couple Dirt Devils are next to the washer.

Norm's Newer Eurekas

hygiene903's profile picture
On the floor in front of his Hoover display are his newer Eurekas. Here again, he'll have to tell you about them, as I'm not too savvy in Eurekas.

Eureka & Kirbys

hygiene903's profile picture
Norm will have to fill you in with the Eureka model number, but I believe the Kirbys are a 510 and 517--correct me if I'm wrong, Norm.

Now For The Vacs In Norm's Other Display

hygiene903's profile picture
These are his daily drivers. To begin, an 86 Connie and a Canadian Lux. That Lux is one powerful machine!

Silverado and 86 Connie

hygiene903's profile picture
That Silverado is another powerful machine! And if I'm not mistaken, he got the 86 Connie at last lear's Convention.

Heritage II, Dyson, and Hoovers

hygiene903's profile picture
Here again. Norm will have to give you the model numbers. I do know the one in between the Dyson and the Convertibles is a Wind Tunnel. Also, the Turquoise Convertible is a vault vac that he won for his display at Hoover Hall during last year's Convention, but I don't know the model number.

Panasonic, Kirby Heritage II, and Dyson

hygiene903's profile picture
At least, I think the one on the left is a Panasonic! Also, at far left is a glimpse of his factory rebuilt D-80. More pics of that coming up!

Norm's Factory Rebuilt D-80

hygiene903's profile picture
What a beauty, and it runs as good as it looks! Even has the instruction book and tools. And although the plastic caddy isn't original to the D-80, it is a nice touch.

And Here's Norm!!

And Last But Not Least

hygiene903's profile picture
Since Revelation is the last book of the Bible, I thought it would be appropriate to post the pic of Norm's Revelation as the last pic in this thread.
And as Rick would say, No vacuums were harmed in the production of this photoplay (but several were run!)!!
So there you have it, the Collection of Norm Brown. Enjoy,
Jeff

Oh My G-d!!!!!!

eurekaprince's profile picture
Can I see more pics of that beautiful Eureka Automatic Upright? The farthest turquoise unit in the Eureka upright shot? Do you have the attachments for it too?

I believe that is the identical machine with which I had a "first fear, then love" relationship as a toddler. It should be Model 210, if I am not mistaken. I think I'll hop in the Corolla now and come down for a visit, Norm!

Jeff, that's a top-rated Sharp "Twin Energy" upright (not Panasonic) in the photo next to the Kirby and the Dyson. Is it "Library Quiet" as the ads used to tout, Norm? If I am not mistaken, Sharp was the first vac company to put both cord clips conveniently high on the unit.

Thanks for the pics, Jeff.

Jeff, you are correct !

It is a Sharpe Not sure what year or model at this point. It is absolutely Library quiet !! It belonged to an older cousin
who went into asisted living. It made it's way from Arkinsa, all the way back to NE Ohio. Then to me in Columbus. I have the attachments and it is an awesome machine !!
The Eureka you picked out in the far background is a 260, blue. Yes, I found the attachments separately on Ebay. I was
really excited when I found the tools. I do have to say they
were a real disappointment in suction. About like a model 28
Hoover, great carpet cleaner, easy to use on the floor. OH and
yes, I did have the plastic cover to seal the suction from the
brush roller!

Norm, what a wonderful collection!! You have the machines displayed so well! Thanks for sharing them with us. Do you have a favorite? Terry

Post# 78656 , Reply# 18   8/16/2009 at 22:20 (5,366 days old) by normvac (COLUMBUS, OHIO)
It's hard to say !!

Terry,
My favorite is hard to say. I still keep going back to my Kirby Heritage II, as well as my budget Lux, model 90 for
my hard floors. They all get used sooner or later !
I still remember Stan Kann and all of the vacuums around
him in a Cleveland Plain Dealer article back in the mid to late 50's. So I am reminded of him when I see my self in the
picture with my dual 80 Kirby (favorite one to look at and
use).

Eureka Pics

hygiene903's profile picture
Brian, this is your lucky day! I remembered that we took a picture of Norm's 260 when Jim Barnhart and I went to Norm's for a mini-meet earlier this year. I knew I posted pics then, so I looked for the thread in the Off-Topic Archives. It's thread 5974, Columbus Mini-Meet if you want to look at all the pics from then. However, I happened to remember that I still have the pics saved, so here's the one you wanted to see with the attachment kit next to it. Norm's running it, while Jim looks on. Enjoy,
Jeff

And here's another pic of the same machine. Jim is saying, "You missed a spot!"
You can also see from looking at these older pics how much work Norm has put into setting up a really fine display, with these two pics as the "before" pics and the ones earlier in this thread as the "after" pics. Well done, Norm!

Thanks for the pics of the Eureka 260!

eurekaprince's profile picture
The unit is almost identical to the one we had when I was growing up in Montreal. We might have had the previous version (the 250), because there are some differences.

First of all, our bag did not say "Eureka". It was the same colour as Norm's, but instead it had a neat graphic of a vertical rectangle closer to the top, with the famous curvey Eureka "E" in a circle and I think the word Automatic in smaller letters in a vertical line.

Also, our tool box was identical in shape, but not in colour. Ours was a light blue (not cardboard brown), similar in colour to the attachment box we see with all the Vibra-Beat canisters. I could never understand why there was no special slot for the curved wand! The only place for it was in one of the wand channels on the side, which made it disappear from sight! Also, the tool box "handle" (basically a hole in the cardboard), got ripped early on, so I had to deal with the word "Eureka" violently ripped in two every time I looked at the box! I knew that box by heart - I must have been the only 4-year old in Canada who knew how to spell "upholstery nozzle"!

The model was very highly rated for carpet cleaning in Consumer Reports, if I remember correctly. This was probably due to to the ingenious top-fill F&G bag which Eureka introduced years before Hoover. And yes, the suction through the attachment hose was pretty weak! Even with the "Bottom Plate" attached to the main unit. And yet, our hired housekeeper used all the tools religiously every week. I remember her using them to clean our carpeted stairs - she had to gradually move the main upright down the stairs about three stairs at a time - it sat pretty comfortably sideways on a tread. The tools that came with it are the classic Eureka tools whose design has survived the decades - the upholstery nozzle was very efficient, and I remember using the "floor and wall brush" to dust floors which, even with the weak suction, did a pretty good job with surface litter. We even used this Eureka with tools to give our car a good cleaning in the summer!

Thanks for the memories! (What vac did Bob Hope have?.....hmmm....)

EP Brian

Interesting topic !

I used to watch my favorite black and White TV shows in the 50's/60's watch for a chance to see a vacuum. Then I often wondered what celebrites bought and had used (by the housekeeper)in there homes. We'vee seen endosements or whitness
to a couple of female celeb's having an air way 66, and
a cancelled ck of another for a package of Lux bags for her
model e I believe. We can only assume that Lucy had a Westhinghouse or two, then even a Hoover or two. That would be soo fun to be able to look into the past and present. then
be able to know who has what vac at any given time period !

Peter Tong was entranced by the noise the new loaded GE Swivel Top made, he started singing to it. Wish those would come out on video.

On post Post# 78606, the vacuum on the left is a Sharp. It's probably made around 2004.
