Interesting new Electrolux design

Boy Skip, that is a unique vacuum. I haven't yet seen them at my local Lowe's.

I assume the handle collapses for storage (like the HooverZ)?. I can't tell by the pictures on the carton, but does this come with attachments?

I was really suprised when I called my Lowe's today and there were in stock. I called electrolux about 2 weeks ago and They said it was scheduled for a Thanksgiving premier but the tech decided to wait till the first of the new year to premier it and I have to say the price wasn't bad at all I got it for 297.00 but with Tax it ran 321.00 Which I was suprised because Electrolux told me they up the MSRP to 499.00 but Lowe's had them for 297.00

It might be a good machine, but I can't see spending even $300.00 for a Eureka bearing the Electrolux name. Aerus, perhaps.....

I didn't have a clue that Eureka was making electrolux but to be honest I like Eureka alot as well so I'm really satisfied with the intensity even though I paid 321.00 for it. I have some really nice eureka's in my collection too.

It's probably an excellent machine. I just think it's sad that Electrolux is no longer in business. Eureka bought the name "Electrolux" about 6 years ago. Just as now there are Dirt Devils out there with the Regina name on them. Aerus now makes a machine that resembles the Electrolux (they simply call it "Lux"), which is probably the same caliber machine as the original Electrolux. The design of the new Lux Guardian hasn't changed all that much from the Renaissance of 10 years ago. I personally would not want to pay $2000 for a machine that does not even bear the "Electrolux" name, even if the motor has a 25-year warranty.

I totally agree with You as well and looks like all the companies are selling out, Hoover among them, Yes I know areus makes the Guardian 9000 which I wouldn't mind having as I do have the renaissance. But there are right now a high dollar vacuum even on ebay. I just wonder now if all the future vacuum cleaners are going to be just plastic junk.

Electrolux

Actually.. Electrolux is still in business .. we are the same company that we have always been. In 2003 however the word "Electrolux" was sold back to the European AB Electrolux and we became Aerus/Electrolux. AB Electrolux out of Europe in turn bought Eureka and now are producing vacuum cleaners and calling them Electroluxes. It was a silly thing to do and I deal with explaining this to customers every day. The Electrolux machines being made by Eureka are cool looking machines, but they have had major problems with them. I have a whole handful of them in the backroom that have been traded in on "REAL ELECTROLUXES". I have even had customers call in and tell me that the wands have caught on fire on these "Eurekaluxes" as we call them in the industry. So keep in mind.. if you know anyone who is shopping for a Electrolux, make sure that they are aware that these orange machines are not the real thing ;)

No, I'm not at all saying that it's a bad vacuum, and with it being your vacuum, I'm sure it will be fine. Being a vacuum collector and taking care of your vacuums, it will be fine. Its the ordinary everyday customers who buy it as their only vacuum that will wind up having problems. It is a cool looking machine, have fun with it!

Actually,

Let's clarify here, guys. AB Electrolux of Sweden really IS the parent company, where "our" (U.S.) Electrolux began. Although I'm sure others can tell the story more accurately than I (paging Charlie Lester), my understanding is the American branch split off around the 1920s, becoming the company that produced the machines we know and love. AB Electrolux continued and thrived as a worldwide appliance company. AB Electrolux BOUGHT Eureka (then Eureka Williams) in the early 1970s, IIRC. The machines we know today as Eureka/Sanitaire are known as Electroluxes in the rest of the world -- and have been for 30 years.

The 2003 deal that created Aerus just returned the Electrolux brand in the U.S. to the SAME company where it originated, and that company is now free to brand its vacuums as Electrolux all over the world.

So wait, I'm confused. Are you saying that in the not too distant future, I will be able to go into a dealership, and once again buy a Guardian that bears the name "Electrolux." Or will the name itself stay with Eureka?

Post# 7159 , Reply# 22   1/3/2007 at 10:12 (6,322 days old) by bisonian (Where the buffalo roamed! (Ocala, FL))
No,

I'm saying that the name will stay with the Swedish company (AB Electrolux) as will the name Eureka. Remember, the parent company of Eureka is AB Electrolux. Eureka is just a division. What you're referring to as a "Eureka-made Electrolux," is, in fact, just the opposite -- at least to the rest of the world.

Aerus is a separate company that once was known ONLY IN NORTH AMERICA as Electrolux. It's been a separate company for about 75 years. (Feel free to correct me on the dateline, as I'm not certain about the time frame here.)

That means in the not too distant future, you will probably be able to go into a dealership and buy a Guardian that bears the name Aerus -- with NO Electrolux affliation. They'll give it a few years for the public to get used to the name Aerus, and then drop all references to Electrolux for those machines.

AB Electrolux (the Swedish company, also former parent to US Electrolux) bought Eureka in 1974. Eurekas have been called Electrolux, and the company has called itself Electrolux, everywhere in the world except the US and Canada since the US operation split off. When Joe Urso et al purchased Electrolux from Sara Lee Corp. (formerly known as Consolidated Foods) for $55 million, almost 10 yrs ago, the first thing he did was to sell the rights to the Electrolux name back to AB Electrolux for $50 million. Thus he purchased Electrolux for $5 million net. But he had to re-name it, as he had sold the rights to the name. There is a transition period in which Aerus may use the name Electrolux, but they will eventually have to discontinue the use of that name completely. My Electrolux Home Care Products US (formerly Eureka) has one version of this, and our friend Derreck, an Aerus Electrolux Branch Manager, has another. Obviously the two companies are telling their employees different stories. The truth probably lies somewhere in between. Interestingly, Aerus contracted out the manufacturing of their machines to Eureka, part of AB Electrolux. Now they are telling their people that they are resuming production at their own Bristol, VA plant. AB Electrolux says that isn't true. I asked my friend (and VCCC member) Jimmy Martin, and old Electrolux man himself, who lives in that area and knows a lot of the factory people in Bristol, and he had seen (at the time of our last conversation about this, a couple of weeks ago) no evidence of anything going on at Bristol that would indicate they were resuming production there. Who knows what to believe? Obviously there is no love lost between these two companies. One thing is for sure, the Electrolux branded machines sold at stores like Lowe's and Sears, are really re-branded Eurekas. They are OK mid-priced machines, but people who think they are getting an Electrolux like mom and grandma had are seriously disappointed. I would not sell these machines myself. I do sell the Sanitaire brand products, which are excellent, but no other Eureka products except the occasional hand vac.

I'm going to do some fortune telling here. I foresee that in a couple or few years from now that Aerus will go belly-up and AB Electrolux will buy it and continue selling the now Aerus machines as Electroluxes once again. Whaddya think?

That sounds fine to me!!

Skip! Oh you did get it!! I like the photos comparing the Converto Vac to the Intensity. That is what i thought of when i saw it. Does it push well like a vacuum or like a lawn mower? I'm wondering if it will catch on or suffer the fate that the Oxygen3 upright did. I just don't see any of those in any of the Lowes or Sears here in the desert.

Lawnboy or Lux?

Hey Marty:

I thought the same thing when I first saw the Intensity. It reminds me of a child's toy lawnmower. So Skip, how is the manueverability? I'll be popping into my local Lowe's today to check it out.

No it handles really well not hard to push at all. On low pile carpet it kinda pulls itself but on high pile and still pushes with ease but doesn't pull itself.

I did manage to visit Lowe's yesteray and saw the Intensity for myself. It was surprisingly heavy; not at all what I imagined (broom-vac lightness). I pulled it down off of the display and rolled it around. It seemed to be pretty easy to push around; at least on the linoleum flooring. I too thought you would be using two hands to push it around like a lawnmower! LOL The retractable cord and telescoping handle were nice features. What kind of surprised me though was how small the bag was. Is this vacuum a type of upgrade from an electric broom; more effective on carpeting? Since it does not have attachments, it doesn't have a whole lot of flexibility. All in all, it's kinda cute though.

The Electrolux Oxygen cannister and Apptitude upright (marked down to $199) models were also available. All models were in the same metallic burnt-orange colour as the Intensity. Do they manufacture specific colours for specific product lines?

Mom

I think there all with just that color but I hope I have good luck with mine, I went to clean a friend's apartment yesterday and I accidently catch her throw blanket so I hurried up and turned it off and then pulled it out and one of the plastic sticks as I call it on the bottom of the brushroll one it broke off, and then I'm starting to have problems with the button that folds the handle down, it does have a warrenty on it so I will see.
