What a wonderful 2 days I had driving down to visit Kyle Kritchbaum, dropping in on Chad, thrifting my way up through Michigan, overnighting in Sarnia with Pete and again thrifting my way home on Tuesday via London and St Marys.

So much happiness came my way at every turn and as usual the Subaru became stuffed up to the windowsills with treasures. Because I am now working 4 12 hour days in a row it will take a while to post all the pictures.

So I will begin this thread, aptly named Green Eggs and Ham...er...Green ham and Bags, with the astounding thrill that at last I have a 1958-62 era green/yellow Eureka 2010 Mobil-Aire 'ham' and 3 bags, thanks to a chance statement about scarce ham bags I've been questing for that Kyle picked up on and took me back to The Shed...forever grateful, Kyle! He also came up with 3 genuine Ham bags...

Does it not look too perfect along with the Roto-matic in green?

Kyle had all the green tools for it and Pete co-incidentally had found a green Vibra-Beat nozzle with a Blue cardboard tool caddy stuffed with blue tools when I got to his place. Wow!

The 1955-59 blue Compact C4 with the flat lid is the one Kyle posted back in April that we struck a deal over. My failure to apply for and receive my passport delayed retrieval until now.

As for the Bags reference I came across a motherload of 35, that's thirty-five, genuine Kenmore branded bags for the square Kenmore Magiccord 2-speed series.

...and you know I will, but it will take a few days.

For your wacky pleasure I found this H20 complete with extra optional accessories that looks never used, for $9.99 at the Sally Ann in London.

I didn't have the heart to leave its silly self behind as it will make for a contrast with the 4 Rexair Rainbows already in residence. :-)

One more studiously composed glamor shot in Pete's basement with his fantabulous corner divan set and high-style boomerang coffee table. I'm holding up a GE Roll-Easy magazine ad. Yippee!!!!!!

Not the only magazine ad I received but more on that and much much more in our second installment of:

I DO like Green Ham and Bags.

You were VERY lucky to have found those bags for the 2 speed Magicords. Around here they are scarcer than hen's teeth. I've resorted to using Hoover K bags in mine.

That's not all that followed me out of that shed, Chase. See below. :-)

But there's still plenty in there that I left for others who will desire them more than I, should they be so fortunate as to be invited in...

While I am sure - just as with my spare partz junk pile area of stuff that holds no appeal for me - this is stuff Kyle just wanted to be rid of and I still feel mighty privileged.

Dave,
Did you notice the very strange "bend" or angle for the Eureka hose handle. I always wonder why it was designed at such a almost squared angle. Never saw any other Eureka made like that except the Green Mobile Air.

I did notice that extreme bend right away,Rob. Thanks for confirming it is correct. The other end is certainly not original in blue but then neither is the one on the Roto-matic. No problem. The Roto-matic green hose is supple and leak-less but the Mobil-aire's leaks like a sieve. Since it is a saran weave it will get the latex treatment and perhaps I'll paint the blue connector green in a few months. The gold plastic Eureka Script is gone from the lid so my temp plan is to scan the script, color it in gold and apply it over the lug holes rather than call them relief vents. I wonder what the vacuum tester will read after plugging them?
Til then the quest for more 'Ham Bags' is on...I know there are some 'out there'...

Also on my way out of London's East end I spotted an older vacuum repair shop sign. It was closed but through the window I was able to make out some vintage shapes. It sure looked like an old time one-man operation so hope springs eternal it's a parts mecca. It could be and well worth checking out next time through...

I picked up a few appliances here and there, too.

Two Sunbeam Radiant toasters, a T-40-1 and a T-48.
A chrome percolator made by the Opal Mfg. Co. Ltd Toronto that takes the older style cord with the wide spaced prongs.
A lovely glass SCM Procter-Silex clean, complete and ready to brew.
A complete and clean Magic Hostess Ice Crusher. There's a grind control dial on the back; this is a serious electric iceberg demolisher...Too bad there's no room for ice trays in my freezer but they sell ice by the bag at the variety store across the street so I'm getting a hankering for fresh localy grown raspberry slushies for Sunday breakfast. :-)

Now, about those Hoovers from Kyle's shed...

aeoliandave's profile picture
Two 115s that need the TLC but they run. Need 4 new brush strips, tho.

The Model 25 Special made my heart skip a beat. pulling it out into the sunshine I saw it was BLUE! and in fairly excellent cosmetic shape under all that dried mud and dust. As we were carrying it across the lawn, the handle fell of, which is when I discovered it has a receptacle inside the bale barrel that the handle plugs in to and secures with a Hoover bolt. Cool!
Found the White Dustette in St Marys.

Tell me again, Kyle, what machine the Hoover Variflex hose is for? I forget and didn't put it in my notes.

This 25 is gonna be a project. Here are the before pictures.

I washed the bag, which took 12 rinsings before clear water. It has a few nasty faded streaks but the lettering is solid. I think it deserves a gentle dye job? I'll have to reference Jack's site for details.

Oh dear, I can't find a reference to or picture of the 25 special anywhere.Other than I know Special means rebuilt at the Factory and it says so on the trim band, what can folks tell me about this attractive blue & brown Hoover?

Tucked in with the Kenmore bags was this manual for the Kenmore Canister.

Also, a mystery dusting brush. It's molded of dark red rubber and has a raised ridgeline down the front. It looks familiar but for what brand?

Really Norm? And now I recall Kyle did say it was for the 115. I didn't see how it would fit but now I think I see it clamps directly to the fan intake inside the hood for full suction? try it tomorrow.

This is what the 25 special looked like before.

Found I had a brown spiral-ribbed Hoover cord with old replacement plug on it so...
took the rubber strain relief in to work and reamed out the excess rubber cord jacket. New cord fits perfectly. Once home I hooked it all up, found a bolt for the bale, gave the hood a quick wash and voila! and it runs nice.
As I surmised through the mud coat there's barely a scratch or chip on it other than on the front face of the handle pole. Someone took care of this cherished Hoover before it got chucked out.
This weekend I'll take the wirewheel to the brushroll, do the detailing and polish up the Bakelite.

I just love the blue/gray knobbletone paint and the surprising light weight the magnesium base imparts.

Question: the brushroll revolves forward, that is brushes the debris ahead of the advancing 25. Is this normal? I really don't know...

and the plea again...what year do we think this is and any other info.

Dave

Kyle gave me a brown Bakelite Hoover crevice tool that fits on the hose and I have a pair of spare curved aluminum hoover wands that match the latch. The latch is a spring tab that clicks into a square open hole just like my Canadian 281 so that clues me in to a possible date. (?)

Dear Dave....

The US 25 debuted in approximately 1937. It was the second in the Hoover line-up behind the fabulous Dreyfus Model 150. The original color scheme was brown base (lightish, similar to the Model 28 that would follow years later). The hood appears to be the original color. The double-bale handle was the last machine with that set-up produced by Hoover. I believe the tool set used was the newer style, one generation after the 150 tool set. I will try to dig up some old ads of the 25. It was a simple but elegant machine. They were real workhorses.

Thank you so much, John. I have the 28 in Canadian form as the 281 and see the similarities - the converter for the 281 slides right in.

Can I assume that the base is that delightful blue/gray to indicate it's a re-build? A lovely colour combo, I think.

There's just over 1/4" of thick bristles on the brushes so it does contact the carpet. Any longer and it would push the vacuum backwards...now about that...can I also assume the debris spitting brush action is intentional? :-)

Well, naturally it won't spit it out if the carpet is laid freely and sucked up to the pummeling beater bars; it's first test run was on glued down carpet. :-(

I have Sunday an Monday off and it'll probably rain. Going to have so much fun running the 281, 5 qnd 115s. Put on my thinkin' cap and figured out the Jr hose attachment. nifty device.

Well, as far as I know...

portable's profile picture
the 25 had a rather unique tool converter (unless the slide-in channel was changed at the factory when they rebuilt it). It was a bakelite strangely angled affair. I seem to remember that the 25 was one of only a few machines to have this strange converter. And the tools had a weird different type of latch on them than the usual pushbutton style. I've gotta find some ads.....I wonder if someone could post a picture of this unique converter??

A few more pictures to round out the weekend trip.

Here, the Owners Guide for the Eureka 'Ham' Canister 1000 Series. I post these scans because, like me, there may be a few more fellers that would like to print them out. With just a bit more time splitting pages and editing one can convert them to double sided booklet form and create a stapled version like the original. Sometimes I will carefully remove the staples and scan them that way which saves the steps of re-arranging the pages yourself. :-) But not this time.

Note that the date blue-penciled on the cover is my and Fred Nelson's birthday, March 2. So, I was 15 years old in 1968...

Here we go, folks. Eureka Style "L" or 1000 Series bags to be used - not the same as the contemporary available Eureka Style "L" bag...not the least bit compatible.

This Guide covers all the 1000 Style canned hams. My green ham has only one exhaust outlet on the bottom and this is the only vent - must have blown unpicked-up dust hither and yon across the floor. LOL

Interesting to me that Eureka made no changes or improvements to the peculiar swing arm generous capacity bag support system used since its 1958 (?)introduction. But it is a slim compact cleaner packing a very powerful motor that glides along behind you on its 3 wheels. There is definitely room beside the motor to add the cordwinder reel as mentioned for later models.

No grass growin' under my feet...

aeoliandave's profile picture
It is growing out on the lawn since it's raining and thundering and as dark as Dorothy's Kansas today. Also a major heatwave has swept in so if it wasn't for the AC I'd be working naked and wiping my forehead a lot...however...currently 86 F and rising fast, from yesterday's mere 64 F.

Nothing for it but to deep-spa the 25. What fun since all the parts are intact other than the original bolt for the bale position lever. Found a suitable bojack bolt, with a 1/4" sleeve washer that rides nicely inside the grooves and stops.

That done, I turned my attention to the rusty brushroll and belt grooves on the motor with a wirewheel on the drill. A lot of packed dirt, mud and insect carcasses caught in cobwebs everywhere but a bristle brush, water, and a Kenmore vacuuming cleaned that up well enough. We're not talking a re-paint here. :-)

It's a real joy to find a machine in this complete but sadly neglected condition, as the re-furblement just gets better and better at each step.

I'm off now to get a 25 watt bulb as 15 watts is just too dim and unsuitable...

At work I found a perfect brown/red match for the handle paint...leather shoe paint, LOL. For now I have painted the rusty switch plate and sealed it under a matt clearcoat. The handle pole is not that far gone that it wants a painting but the yoke will get it.

I found evidence of the original light tan paint in a corner of the base. I really like the Hoover rebuild blue, tho. The hood band has a lovely transparent blue glaze that gives that blue glow to the lettering. yes, I know the cord is probaly too light a brown but it's the only one I had in the cord partz bin, dammit. The vintage rubber replacement plug looks good, I think.

I think you were wise to leave the rebuild blue as-is. It was actually a rarity to see these 25s as rebuilds, so preserving what the factory did to it is important. Come to think of it, since the factory is no more, preserving any of the Specials is taking care of a part of Hoover's past...

No 25 watt bayonet base bulbs to be found at hardware stores. I'll go to Ellison's Shop tomorrow - he'll have some.

Dropped in to the Goodwill on the way back from gassing up. Found this lovely Bratz radio control car with opening doors with latch handle buttons that work, fully detyailed interior with fold forward seats w seatbelts, a removable sunroof and an opening trunk. Bratz are apparently anorexic gurls with really really large heads...mmm...great role models, eh?

On a more realistic note, this is the new 2010 Subaru Outback. The only thing about it I like is the colour. It's HUGE and looks like everyone else's SUV. Shame on Subaru for eliminating the frameless windows, wrap-around greenhouse glass and unique Subaru style overall. BOOOOOO!!HISSSSS!!

The Legacy is now only available as a framed side window sedan, styled completely different and is equally bland from any angle.

BORING in the extreme.

Subaru is either gonna sell a lot of these to bland people or will experience a backlash loss of new sales to Subaru aficionados. All the Subie folks I've talked to, including salesmen, are thumbs down at this new look.

I have my feelers out for a 2005 to 2007 Legacy GT Limited with the turboed boxer in dark blue or black.

Very nice find Dave - it was in very good restorable shape for it's age, and you got rid of that rust nicely. One thing I HATE when working on old cleaners is rust... it's a four letter word! I think your belt was on backwards in the photo though, if I reviewed it correctly. I'm sure you were just in a hurry to fire it up and see how it worked. Just teasing. Oh, where did the lumberjacks pants go!? Hopefully they remembered to check the oil.

Hey, do you remember those "Soldiers Of The World" dolls Walmart and other places had back in the '90s?

I'm getting really old, deep down inside I still love those great old boats from the '50s through the early '80s, but I like a lot of the new vehicles out today. I almost got a new '06 Dodge Caliber until my wonderful brother and my lawyer crushed my dream. Now I have a '00 Nissan Xterra. When I win Lotto I am getting one of these:

Alan

My family owned the exact Mercury you posted only it was not red. It was my mom's car and ours was a more subdued cream color, but it did have the "wood" siding. Dad traded in the 1957 because Mom grew very frustrated with the nuances of the pushbutton transmission, which repeatedly got stuck in reverse. Mercury went back to column shifters in 1959 and that car proved to be more reliable. We kept it until it was traded for a white 1962 model. Nothing but Lincoln/Mercury for our family. The first was a 1951 Sport Sedan and mom's last car was her beloved 1968 Cougar XR7 GT with the 390 4 bbl, which she drove until she passed away in 1994. I still own the car today.

I figure I can get another 2-3 years out of my 1998 Legacy GT Limited wagon if necesary to get a 2007 Legacy wagon. They changed the grill in 2008 and I don't like it.

I don't like the 2005-09 Outback because I won't pay extra for plastic frou-frou plastered over the wheel wells and I don't need 8" ground clearance.

I DO need a sleek 'Astroboy/Elroy Jetson' road rocket AWD wagon that can take a 9 foot organ pipe in the rear with the front passenger seat reclined. with leather interior, a power seat and sunroof and all the bells and whistles, cause I'm spoiled, I am. The Legacy is simply a cleaner aerodynamic design than the Outback. :-)

Here's a 2007 in the light blue. The dark blue is more like Navy Blue.

Well, now the 25 is safely pretty enough to set aside I'm tackling the Eureka 1010 ham (I apologize for mistakenly referring to it as a 1020, that's my copier security code :-))

I mentioned earlier that the gold raised script is gone from the lid - but 'obile air' is intact on both sides; this leaves six 1/8" vent holes in the lid that seriously affect the suction potential. More importantly it just looks wrong. :-) Sure I cold tape over the holes and get a test reading but what I'm really interested in is printing the script on adhesive backed paper, cutting it out meticulously and applying it to the lid for a simulation.

Been searching the www half the night looking for this exact script that I could re-size and colour and highlight in gold. No luck other than fuzzy angled pictures that are only a guide for free-hand interpretation, at which I have no drawing skill. I have the software to manipulate anything to fit but twice life size would do nicely.

Does someone have a Mobil-Aire readily available that you could take a steady, sharp very high-rez digital photo and email it to me? I would recommend a direct on shot without flash - take the 1010 into the daylight and it's unlikely you'd need a tripod. Doesn't matter how large the file is, I can handle it.

Thankyou Kyle, that's great news! Each Junior had one bristle-less strip and one barely usable so I put both on the dark brown one with the original cord and they are barely effective. But the hose is a treat and I have a set of tools for it or something Hoover of the same age anyway! Going to have to locate a bag bezel ring for the burgundy DVC bag. They both run fine.

One day when the Mobil-Aire is presentable I'll celebrate with Green Eggs and Ham...

Your parents sound like my kind of people! I love those early Cougars, truly one of the best cars L/M came up with! We had a '51 Mercury Club Coupe until June of 1962, when it was traded for a '57 Chevrolet 210 2 door sedan. Our first "fancy" car was a 1970 Pontiac LeMans 4 door sedan. Other cars were in the picture here.

Dave, the Subaru wagons are very appealing, the 2007 is really spiffy looking.

Green Ham 1010 update.

aeoliandave's profile picture
First off, plugging the 8 logo script holes in the lid raises the test suction from 63" to 70".

Second, by pure happenstance when I went to Ellison's vac Shop Wednesday morning to get some 25 watt bayonet base bulbs for the Hooversm while we were chatting about this and that Bill says "hey Dave, here comes your new Best Girl".

Yup, He had called the Lady with the 50th Anniversery 1010 ham a few days earlier and told her to come in and try out the new bags I'd set him up with.

Backtrack - I'd been in when I got back from the Adrian Weekend and discovered for him that a readily available Eureka 'S' bag is also a fan-out design, so by trimming out the inlet hole 1.8" around the edge and gluing on an original or re-created 1010 L bag cardboard mount the problem would be solved and we can all use our Eureka Magic-Aires until the cows don't come home no more.

back to story - Well, her name is Grace, a lady of about 65 years all perky and vibrant and her Mother bought the Eureka 50th Mobile-Aire in about 1957/59 she remembers as a little girl. When Mom passed Grace brought the Mobile-aire home and noticed how much better it vacuumed her house than what she was using. And so it is more or less her daily driver now.

She is thrilled about the bag fix and fascinated about the Eureka ham knowledge I was deluging her with. Naturally I mentioned I would like to have her 1010 when she is done with it and please do not clean off the 50th Anniversary sticker. "We'll talk" says she and we laughed and laughed as I expect her Magic-Aire will be in use quite a few more years. We have exchanged numbers...

Here it is after steamiron flattening, gluing and re-enforcing of tears and splits, drying on the attic floor.

This was die-cut from a 60" x 36" sheet of printed corrugated cardboard.

before or as I reassemble these type of caddies I cut sections of wire coat hanger and insert a strengthening rod inside the front folds to keep the shelf sag from re-occurring.
