I went to the flea market today hoping to find a vacuum. I didn't see anything at all, so I gave up and started looking at kitchen gadgets and infomercial products. Just as I was leaving, I saw a vacuum handle sticking up on a table. It a mother and her child selling a few things on the table... mostly junk. I asked how much she wanted for it and she said 30 bucks. I plugged it in and it ran, so I told her she had a sale. I asked her if it had been used at a hotel (we have the same ones at work) and she said no, she bought it when she tried to start a housekeeping business but the business didn't work out. She said she only used it in one house. I believe her... it's pretty clean and no scratches, just a couple white paint scuffs on the bumper and motor housing that will come right off. There's a couple points of rust on the brushroll, but nothing to be concerned about. I know it's not rare or terribly expensive, but for 30 bucks, I really didn't have a choice!

This one is so new that it says Sanitaire by "Electrolux" instead of Eureka. At least they are keeping the Sanitiare name. I really don't have a "go to" Eureka, so this will fill a void in my collection. The Eureka 630 was my grandpas, and it's from my childhood, so I don't use it, the ESP barely runs (though my friend Matt is going to look at it for me when we have our mini-meet) and is missing the rubber on the back wheels, and the Sanitaire SC887 shoots dust everywhere and is too loud since I washed the bag. I had actually been wanting a blue Sanitaire with a headlight, but alas I found this one first.

Anyone have any tips for dealing with a shake out bag? My Hoover 28 has one, but it's in such bad shape I don't use it. The Kirby Dual Sanitronic 80 has the Sani-emptor, so this will be the first shake out bag that I actually use reguarly.

Anyone else have this machine? Opinions on it? I know it's got more plastic on it than its vintage predecessors, but I still like it. The bag ballons really big and I also like the foot switch and vibra groomer. I don't know why they don't put a quick release cord clip on the nice Eurekas, but they do on the cheap ones! It's a little loud, and the hand grip tries to come off with each back stroke, but all in all, I'm quite pleased.

 I wish I could a good vacuum like that so bad!

To fix the grip you should try pulling it completely off, putting a drop of glue on the inside, and slide it back on completely. Then give it a couple of days to dry. Just a tip. :)

That's a 7 amp model. That's why it's kind of loud. Very little will outclean that guy!

To care for the shakeout bag, you can do it a multitude of ways. I tend to empty the contents into the trash (OUTSIDE of course), the reattach it with the vacuum running and shake it vigorously, then empty the rest out. Every once in a while I'll run the modern ones through the washer on the gentle cycle when they get disgusting. The vintage ones just get hit with a canister vacuum to pull the dirt back out of the bags.

To fix the handle grip scrub the handle and the inside of the grip thoroughly with denatured alcohol. Let it all dry thoroughly, then drizzle a little alcohol on the handle and shove the grip back on. When the alcohol evaporates, it'll be stuck on there like glue.

Nice $30 buy, I'd have bought it. I'd use it sparingly though because I don't like shakeout bags other than for the novelty, they're too dusty, you can really see it when the sun shines in the right direction and your turn them on LOL

You can get a conversion bag for these machines. My mom's sanitaire has one that she uses the FilterAire bags in.

If that machine (like most red Sanitaires) has the bag with the white coating on the inside, you will want to avoid washing it. The white coating is what holds back most of the dirt, and it holds up poorly when washed.

Thanks. I know a good Eureka will slap the dirt out of the carpet like nobody's business. I removed the bag once on one and put my hand behind it. Nearly sandblasted my hand off! Maybe I should do that as a form of microderm abrasion LOL. I almost wish my carpet was thicker and dirtier so that it would be challenge for this machine. I will definitely glue or alcohol the handle grip on... I can't believe they would make their machines with such loose grips! I do like the bigger power switch on this one too.

That vacuum...

 ...looks like its based on one of those old plastic f and g eureka bosses with the colorful bag, but it has a metal handle and more improvements. You should buy a red f and g outer bag for it. That is by far the best way to handle finding a eureka/sanitaire vacuum with a shake out bag which are much harder to maintain(that is if you want f and g).

I think I'll keep the shake out bag on it just for fun. I can always get an F and G set up if I change my mind. The funny thing is.... remember a couple months ago when I posted that I wanted to find a Eureka 1934... the black and white F and G bag household upright. I hadn't seen any for sale since posting that I wanted it. Yesterday after buying this Sanitaire, I thought, "Well, I found my Eureka. Guess I don't have to look for a 1934 anymore." I get home and hop on Craig's List and low and behold.... there's a Eureka 1934 on there for 10 bucks.... the exact price that I said I'd pay for one if I found it. FREAKY! Scary too! Easter has always been a Eureka time for me... when I was a young teenager, my family got a Eureka Bravo from Kmart on the home from dinner at grandmas on Easter Sunday...

I didn't e-mail the seller of the 1934, though I was tempted. I don't have room to store every variation of every vacuum ever made, and the ad said the bag zipper was broken. But still, how ironic!

Ah!

 Thats the vacuum I was talking about! When i was like 5 i was obsessed with it and pretty much any other vacuum with a big, round bag, but I especially liked it because of the shape of the hood and the color of the bag. I must say I am still quite obsessed with eureka/sanitaire vacuums with the ESP-ish design. I am still on my quest to find a eureka/ sanitaire upright....

F&G Bags...

 Bobby, if you ever need/want the F&G conversion bag, it's pretty cheap at ~$20.

See the link below. This is the same place I bought the one that's in my mom's Sanitaire. Works well and looks better than the ugly gray monstrosity that was on her's to begin with!

On those genuine shake-out bags, beware if the white lining starts to crack or flake off. The bags themselves don't filter much better than the average gym sock. If you want to keep it looking original, get one of the aftermarket woven bags. They look the same, but they filter MUCH better.

On a different note...

 Heres a vacuum I REALLY want! Check out the specs! It also has an f and g outer bag, all metal construction(I believe), a

 Well, I still really like it! I knew sanitaires were plastic, but I also had a suspicion that this was to. I still REALLY like it! I also found a pic of the eureka we discussed before that I like.

Yep... that's the 1934 I made reference to. Quite an attractive machine despite its plastic handle.

Thanks for the info on the F and G bag conversion system. Maybe when the white coating on this bag wears off, I'll get that to replace it with! I did shake it out for the first time today, WHAT A MESS... but still kind a fun to see all the dirt. I'm going to wait until it sags a little before doing it again!

Hmmmm...

 ...I know I keep posting here but I just love eureka style commercial vacuums. I found YET ANOTHER version of the eureka 1934 by tornado piranha as the commercial carpet keeper. Any one have one of these, or any vacuum based on the 1934? Please post pictures because I just love looking at these vacuums!(I actually think the tornado piranha is in cooler colors than the other 1934 machines. Just a comment.)

It is pretty... the all black version. Wow, that site has a verion of the Bissell Prolite as well... and they even sell a new 1934 for only 115 bucks!

This machine isn't very heavy, but it is hard to push (even with the hight adjusted correctly) because of how powerful it is. I keep thinking that ballooning bag is going to raise the machine up in the air and make it float! I put the bag on wrong (forgot to snap the "pin" in the hole on the underside) when I emptied it yesterday. Tried to vacuum this morning and felt air rushing out on my bare feet!

 I feel my 518 is going to do it. I thought the bag was going to explode when I first turned it on. Did not think they got that big. hehe. Thats why I like those dump out bags.
