Some of you may remember me from way back on automaticwasher.org (what a great site!) Alas, I live in an apartment, thus cannot collect vintage washers. However, an interest in vintage small appliances became an addiction. I found small kitchen appliances to be the "gateway" to collecting vacuum cleaners!

Now, before anyone judges me (or anyone else here) as a "hoarder" I offer the following:

1) My collection isn't that big (yet). We're not even talking 20 vacs, unless you include the vintage hand vacs.

2) I have a respect for history, and things past. I believe in preserving them so that future generations may look and ask "What is that?" And the answer be "That Virginia, back in the day, is what was called "quality." "What's qua-qual-quality Daddy?" (C'mon people, work with me on this!)

Anywho, I hope to get a photo album going soon of my old suckers...but here's a bit of a list of what I have:

Kirby 560
Kirby Sanitronic VII w/Handy Butler rig
Kirby Dual Sanitronic 50
Kirby Dual Sanitronic 80
Kirby Classic w/Handy Butler rig.
Kirby Classic Omega w/Handy Butler rig, Attachments, etc.
Kirby Heritage w/attachments, etc.
Kirby Legend II w/attachments, etc.
Kirby G3 w/attachments, etc.
Kirby G4 w/attachments, etc.
Kirby G5 w/attachments, etc.
Kirby Ulimate G w/attachments
Royal 89130
Kenmore Canister Model 116 w/Power Mate
1951 Compact 22nd Anniversary Edition w/Polish-Aire and Magic Disc
All kinds of hand vacs

Two small (lapel pin) Kirby teddy bears.
Kirby coasters.
A Kirby lapel pin.
And even a set of Compact/TriStar salt and pepper shakers!

Welcome John, that is a very nice collection that you have started there!! I know we will all look forward to pictures when you have a chance. Have you thought about joing the VCCC, we would love to have you with us. There are several other really nice members in your area that you might want to connect with. Again, welcome!! Terry

Hello John.

Welcome aboard. Yes Virginia, (if that's your real name) Hand vacs count when you are counting vacs for total consideration of your tally count. However, the Kirby's don't. It seems you might have a sense of humor...good thing to have! Feel free to hoard as many vacuums as you can, no one will look down on you for that. (Except that one guy)! You say it's for "historical" reasons, well...we'll go along with that. Feel free to talk about and post anything you like, as long as it's not about coffee pots. I too have a set of those Compact salt/pepper shakers. Are yours red and white? I mean the shakers. I mean the salt/pepper shakers. Again, welcome aboard. You'll have fun here!

Rick

Welcome to the club! I think there is a fine line between hoarding and collecting. Don't worry about what we think. I have a fair size of small kitchen appliances myself, and haven't given up on the idea of trading up to 1960 or older fridge and built in range top and oven.

Hi John, well you know I'm a big collector of small appliancesj and assorted old kitchenablia. Post pics of some of those as well. Percolators especially, oh and mixers and blenders and toasters and can-openers.
One of my faves

Hi and welcome.
I also have a thing for vacuums, vintage percolators, mixers, corning ware, Westinghouse roaster ovens, vintage tupperware, and fenton and Duncan Miller glasswares.
Hope you enjoy it here,

Sam

Pete, I love the Dormeyer percolator, the handle and gold trim is very similar to the Cory percolator of grandma's(can't wait to put it in my collection)

Multiplication :-)

Welcome aboard John, I only know one member from the club in person but have talked to several. They are all a great bunch of guys with tons and tons of knowledge about vacuum cleaners. As said above by Jeff (my friend who lives close and we have "mini" meets as often as we can), the critters just grow like rabbits. I started with none and now have over 100 in a short period of time. Best to you !!

Thanks for the nice welcome!

Thanks, all of you for the nice welcome -- even the heretic who said Kirby's don't count! :-) And yes, my Compact salt and pepper shakers are red and white.

And PETE! I remember you from automaticwasher.org! Good to see you! Or maybe not, as you were an inspiration in small appliance collecting! I've an old perculator, waffle iron, and Mixmaster due to your encouragement!

And yes, I'm going to join the VCCC. I may even try to make it to the convention, but alas, I have jury duty that week.

Thanks again! Looking forward to being here!

John

I got out of jury duty simply by going down to the courthouse and asking one of the court clerks to have me excused. I don't even think they asked me why I wanted out but I had a reason just in case.

Pete,

Please tell about the copper coffee pot?

Rick

Post# 61084 , Reply# 15   2/25/2009 at 18:03 (5,538 days old) by petek (Ontario)

Well the top golden one is a Dormeyer model 20 iirc and that is a real gold wash on it.

The middle one is the ever popular Silex Lifelong or sometimes Citations, this one having the brew lights in the base of the carafe to light up the pot of coffee when it's done. There were others of this design by Silex but not all of them had the "lights" which makes these ones so special LOL

The 3rd reddish copper one is actually a colored aluminum Presto. They came in red and blue and not sure about other colors.

Post# 61085 , Reply# 16   2/25/2009 at 18:36 (5,538 days old) by crevicetool (GA )

It looked aluminium - like those drinking glasses everyone had back in the day. I do remember the lighted carafe. Are these Proctor-Silex? Aren't the components supposed to be easily replaced without having to buy the whole thing? Seems to me I remember that as being a sales point!

Thanks
Rick

Help! I'm getting interested........

What brand is that one? Very interesting handle!

Post# 61114 , Reply# 19   2/26/2009 at 07:44 (5,538 days old) by luxg ()

You are so right Rick that was the selling point all the parts were suppose to be easily changed. That Proctor Silex with the light base is such a pretty coffee maker. I think your hooked!!! John that is a very interesting pot, I'm wondering if it is a non automatic, meaning just that you had to unplug it when you thought the coffee was done.

Wow...

...add my hearty compliments to the Universal and service. Very nice indeed! I especially like that it is an urn. Very classy!

Rick, the one I snagged off eBay is a 1959 job, made by the Enterprise Aluminum Co. This will be my second percolator. I also have a Knapp-Monarch Model 770 of an unknown vintage.

Patrick -- good to hear about St. Louis folks! And your Kirby collection blows mine away! I'm trying to branch out a bit, but I must admit that my heart belongs to Kirby, LOL! My first Kirby was the Legend II, which I absolutely love.

By the way, regarding the Jury Duty thing...I've been excused twice now due to work -- I don't think I'll be able to duck it a third time. Ugh.

But to close on a happy note, I mailed my check and membership application for the VCCC today. Woohoo!

John

Found this interesting coffee perker this afternoon. Smooth sensous seamless shape and I really like the glass dome topper stopper. The lift off lid simply catches under the handle lip. It works! No cord but I found a modern one that fits.

I was in Woodstock to get a cheap BP Monitor at Walmart. Got a much better one at an actual Medical Supply place.

Went thrifting.

Sally Ann gave up this nice pair of SEARS two speed lectric scissors with lamp for $3. These are the alarmingly noisy vibrating kind and they work great. So pretty in pale green.

This caught my eye down on the floor behind a repro Coca Cola tray. A home made brass handled wood tray with picture under glass. On close inspection you can see it is amatuer (because of the needle drill holes off the line) wood fretwork like a marquetry puzzle and I think quite stylish in a 1920s sort of style - maybe from a photograph or calendar print? The individual pieces are loose under the glass yet fit together snugly. My story will be it was a love token present from a besotted swain for his sweetie on their anniversary of a magical trip to Niagara. I have a 10 " balsa wood stilleto my dad carved at the beach for my Mom when they were dating. It belongs on this tray, I think.
For this I was happy to pay $12.

The true colors under flash. Lovely graining.

View is the American Falls with Canadian Falls in the background. There are no buildings and I know you'd have to pan to the right to see the old 1929 Hotel that overlooks the Canadian Falls. That and the postcard-like frame matt surround design elements is why I think it was crafted well before WW2 when the Canadian side exploded into Tourism Carnival time.

Can never have too many of these close by the vacuum disassemble bench, says I. Particularly when one has small hands. Tools like this are usually American sized for big beefy hands like Crevictool's. :-) Up until this Ryobi - probably marketed to girls...I mean Women - my most used power screwdriver is the first generation Black & decker

Charged them both overnight and they work just fine. The mini 'dremel' will be handy when the task is light detail grinding and polishing and one doesn't want to set up the 120 volt Fordham motor with long shaft drive.

The nice thing is, both tool shafts are precise in their bearings aand thrust washers - they don't have that nasty slack forward and back so the tool bit contacts exactly where you aim it, know what I mean?
And they are BLUE!

Obsesive Powerdriver Comparison

aeoliandave's profile picture
The shortcoming of the Ryobi is the very short bit collet, but it's good to have a torque dial. I can always snap in the extension shafts, tho. when the screw is way down there. If the Black & Deckers are 'WallE' the Ryobi is 'Eva'.

All time Favorite is the early short light B&D with the long collet and tapered head for getting into tight confines. I have replaced its NiCads 3 times to keep it running. What I do is snag a few B&D multi-cell PowerPaks from the recycler, take 'em apart and re-spot weld the contact strips. I find that the end cells are usually flatlined but the middle ones are still viable for recharging.

Next favorite is the compact packable orange portable B&D because is uses 4 AA alkalines when you forgot to charge the others. The handle is oval in shape so fits the hand well.

Least favorite is the next & current generation B&D - it's heavy and badly balanced. The fluted handle hurts my fingers.

Of course sometimes only a long shaft manual screwdriver will do the trick so I have several tool boxes full of reclaimed screwdrivers. Now that I have the full Torx line of tips the one I really need to get in these modern times is the one with the triangular tip - more and more toys and appliances use these screw heads for 'security'. Yeah, like that's gonna stop me from getting something apart. LOL
