WOW! My chronology must be WAY off!!!! Then again, perhaps they began to manufacture these classics again and it passed under my radar. So glad he took it to a qualified dealer to check it out prior to listing! Good for him.

Maybe the hose was replaced in 1985. It sure ain't no '85 "vacume". Beautifully complete though.

I Think I Know...

 ...What might be going on here.

The XXX was offered as a rebuilt machine through Lux dealers up into the 1980s. It sounds like a tag is on the machine somewhere that dates a rebuild to '85 or '86.

In the old days, Lux did a tremendous business on rebuilt machines (I am not talking about Metropolitan's rebuilds in this post, only ones done by Electrolux itself). In fact, my first Lux was a rebuilt Model L with a PN-1 (I don't own that machine any more, but I do own a very similar L), purchased from the Electrolux agency on Piedmont Avenue here in Atlanta. Cost me something like $159 plus tax and interest; they financed it in-house. This was 1972, and the machine was probably seven or right years old by then. It was hammertone blue; Lux did that with the rebuilds. They did a nice job rebuilding it; you honestly couldn't tell it was not new unless you knew that Ls didn't come in hammertone blue new. All switches, wheels, cord and handle were new, as were the tools and the housing of the PN-1. It came with an instruction manual as well.

It was the cheapest rebuild they had with a power nozzle; it didn't have a cordwinder, just the halo. In those days, I didn't know enough to look for any serial number info that might identify the machine as a rebuild, but it seems reasonable to assume that there was some indication of that somewhere on the machine, besides the hammertone paint job.

Anyway, I'm betting this eBay machine was a rebuild. Charlie Lester has documented an XXX rebuild by Electrolux as late as 1988:

well I can't believe they think that 1985 is vintage. That just makes me feel old. After all I am from 1985. lol

 I know what you're saying; that does look very original. Maybe someone who knew a bit about vacuums collected a set of original tools for a rebuild, or maybe there's some other explanation. Hard to say.
