Hello, I have come accross an odd older Hoover this week is is a Penncrest Model 1370 in white and baby blue. Does anyone have an idea of age, rarity? It is very clean and complete. I will most likely be listing it on ebay within the week unless I get an offer I can't refuse. I do have more pictures available too. Thanks Robert

Wow!

Robert, that's a great looking Penncrest! I found one just like it in a thrift store and was glad to find it, it's now my only Penncrest in my Hoover collection. Does it still say Penncrest on the front of the hood, and is there still a Penncrest logo on the front of the base, can't tell from the pic. I sent mine through the Marty Kaplan spa treatment, and it's like new, quite a runner.

Rick

The penncrest is on the hood, but the logo is missing from the base where the hoover logo would have been.

If it is badged as a Penncrest and not J.C.Penney vthan it should be before 1972 or 73 because I do believe that is when J.C.Penney dropped the Penncrest name and started badging their home products as J.C.Penney. You dont see many vacuums with the Penncrest or J.C.Penney names on them

Heres the Penney's Hierarchy 1969-1971

This machine was the lower end of three Hoover built upright models that Penney's offered in 1969-70. I'm looking in my Spring and summer 1969 Penney's catalog and it's illustrated next to the TOL machine and a Penncrest Dial-A-Matic.

Catalog # R 869-0091
Upright Cleaner with out headlight and cord reel.
Ship wt. 20 lbs.
$ 49.87
color blue and white (no denotation of what hue of blue it is)

This hood design of course was wholly concurrent with the Hoover 1060. Which of course is believed to be, and I do too; the pinnacle of the Hoover Convertibles development.

The upper end machine of course was the Penncrest Cord Reel Convertible. This model had the full headlight lens, and small sticker medallion on the lower right hand corner of the base. I'm not sure if it was actually the medallion by then, or the sticker that came later in it's place. From the illustration it looks sticker to me.

The Pencrest Deluxe Cleaner with Cord reel and Headlight:
Catalog # R 869-0331
Shipping Wt. 23 lbs.
Reatil $ 65.87

Both had the two speed motor, two position height adjuster and full width bumper, unlike some lower end Hoover's like it, which wrapped only halfway back on the base.

These models continued into 1970, the only running change was that the cord reel housing went from round to square like Eurekas later Cordaway housing boxes. in 1971, the Cord Reel version was dropped , which left the machines diffrerences in the addition of a headlight, and a full width bumper, the half width one now used on the lower end model exclusively.

Yours is probably a 1970 model looking at things. BUt I could be incorrect as well...

Chad

p.s. Tom Anderson does have the TOL sister to your upright at his home in N. Canton. You will be able to see it for yourself if you are going to be at the convention two weeks from now.
