Why was a Kirby G5 labeled as an "antique"? It's not THAT old.

That is rich... I'd balk at even a Legend II being called "vintage"! (It's just about 30 years old, but to me it's more like on the old side of modern.) |

The words one selects for listing titles become the search tags used by search engines to target certain pages. Choose the most popular search words to gain the most traffic to your page. |

Words like 'antique' and 'vintage' mean different things to different people--and sometimes to different groups. One could even make the argument that we here at Vacuumland might be unwittingly contributing to that misperception. Someone perusing these boards for information on their G3 would see that we use 20 years as the dividing line between 'vintage' and 'contemporary' vacuum cleaners and thus deduce that their G3 might be 'antique', but it's really just an arbitrary distinction. My Kirby G5, which was made in 1997, qualifies as 'vintage', but my G6, which is two years newer but basically the same machine with a different color scheme is still 'contemporary'. What will be even more hilarious is next year my 1999 model Gsix would be considered 'vintage' but my other one, a "2001 Limited Edition", would still be 'contemporary'. To be clear, I'm not trying to start any flame wars here, just pointing out a bit of irony.

I see that on eBay a lot. Sometimes I think it's just due to the seller not knowing how old the item is. For example, I see newer chrome Sunbeam Mixmasters made in China listed as vintage, when they're probably after 2000 made.
Sometimes modern all metal fans will also be listed as antique or vintage. Again, not sure if the seller just thinks it's old or they want to broaden their search audience. |

Speaking from experience at work, s a lot of people see something like a Kirby or Royal and automatically assume its much older than it is. Lots of people will think of the vacuum isle at Wal-Mart when they think of new vacuums, not realizing there are a variety of designs made. I've had people walk into the store and not realize bagged vacuums were still made! |
