Hello dial a matic lovers,I have a Hoover dial a matic model 1149 that I got from eBay back in august and it's in good condition but the problem is that it won't turn on,does anybody know why, does it need carbon brushes? I really want to use this piece of beauty. And does anybody know the serial number's production month and year? I'm guessing '65 or '71 to '74. It's 0505482. Thank you.

Hello Gabriel and All,
Up at the top of each Vacuumland opening page there is " Manuals & Literature" and I needed a schematic of the Hoover Dial A Matic and lo and behold it was there and only cost 3.99 to download "Hoover Dial-A-Matic Service Instructions" and it is really comprehensive. It covers both non power drive and power drive models. For me taking it apart and figuring out what is wrong can be as much fun as collecting. Yes, I can see being afraid of breaking something and some time I also am. I have a reasonably nice Hoover 1170 that I got a few months ago and unknown to me there were 2 screws missing causing the power drive to not work and there was this weird spring that was about 3” long and coming out of it. Let me tell you that $3.99 was well spent. The spring is back where it belongs and I found 2 screws which worked. The spring was the Dash Pot Spring and the screws were for the Delrin Bearing. The 1170 power drive is totally operating perfectly. Well that’s my three dollar and ninety-nine cents worth for today. Good luck to you. Thank you for looking, Pete |

I don't really find the DAM to be all that intimidating personally, the trick to it is that you want to remove the nozzle housing from the machine before trying to take the body apart. You remove the clamps, being careful of the spring, on either side in the bottom, and then if I remember correctly, it comes up, over the handle, not down off the bottom of the body. Its been a while since I've had to do anything to one.
That's something that the UK calls what we know as a Convertible the Sr., and the Dial-A-Matic got the Convertible name! But we got UK built TurboPower machines under the Sovereign and Innovation names. Strange how they don't just use the same name everywhere. |
