I was in a real junky used store today and saw an upright Goblin. No bag, no beater bar. It looks to be from maybe the 30's? What does anybody know about this machine? I have heard of Goblin's in Europe, but not North America.

Any info?

Guy

first question - DID YOU BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!

I love them.

goblin was sold in Canada from the early 30's into the 50's with the 30's/40's models being the ones predominantly found. Chances are its either a Goblin Monarch or Wizard - both should have sets of attachments with them.

Sorry the picture isnt any better.

If you dont want it I'll gladly trade you something for it

Doug

all i can tell you about goblin upright is that a family in our street had 1 from in the 1960s. it had a blue bag and black and cream striped cloth hose with straight chrome handle and you had to take the belt off with your finger.... cant remember much else... sorry!

I didn't buy it. According to the brochure you provided, it would be a Monarch. I fiqured since it didn't have a bag or beater bar I wasn't interested. It did, however have it's hose stuck on where the bag should have been. If your'e interested Doug, I will go back and pick it up.

Trades eh...Hmmmm, what's on offer, LOL!

My Aunt...

...had, and probably still has a Goblin cylinder cleaner from the 1970's. Yellow plastic, rectangular affair, similar to the Electrolux shapes of the 1960's.

Goblin was always advertised in the Home Shopping Catalogues, and they were practically the cheapest cleaner you could get. The Goblin upright machines had 'Flo-beat action', whereas the Hoovers were described as 'Beats as it sweeps as it cleans'.

Hi Calum:

Sounds like your aunt might have the model 581 (see pic). It also came in green.

Doug - that's really funny!

The very Monarch you posted above now belongs to a friend of mine. It's just spent several months at my house, being restored!

I've got the brown version of that, Doug :)

Very crude, very solid.

Does what it says on the tin you might say ;]
