Yes, this was the Electro-Hygiene version of the 231 or 975. If I remember right, they were not built by Royal, but built FOR Royal by Kingston. I am not too familiar with the canister model and have never seen one in person, as the dealership I worked out of when I sold Electro-Hygiene in the 70's only handled the 903 upright and 966 tank. I have no idea why they didn't sell the canister, or other tank and upright models that were available at the time.
I have heard that the canister was quite powerful and did an excellent cleaning job, probably why your Grandma still uses it. As for the weight, you may want to pop the top and check the bag--may need changed. Here are pics of my 903 upright and 966 tank as they appeared when I sold them. Jeff |

The Electro Hygiene WAS made for Royal by Kingston. Kingston also made them for Universal, Sani-Way, and Firestone. This is my green Electro-Hygiene Deluxe, from 1956, given to the Vacuum Cleaner Museum by my good friend (and former VCCC member) Clay Floyd. Complete and in perfect condition, Clay traded it in on a Rainbow in the early 1960's.
