Went into the local Salvation Army thrift store today.

Look what I found!  A beautiful Hoover 69 Convertible!  It cost a whopping $4.89...

What you see is what I got.  Needed a little cleaning up is all and a nut and bolt on the outer bag.  I few rough spots on the bag cover but it's nearly perfect.

Loving it.  There's nothing like the soothing sound of a Hoover!

What a great find, Greg! Gee, I wish I could find Hoover Convertible's period, let alone a gem like this for $5 dollars. Enjoy cleaning house with it.

WOW! What a beauty! I love the colors. And you're right, nothing else sounds like a Convertible as it "beats as it sweeps as it cleans."

I got a Convertible model 70 at a thrift store a few years ago for around ten dollars. I have a video of it on my Youtube channel-TheUniversalDave1. It's pretty scratched up. I plan to eventually repaint it and polish the hood.

You were in the right place at the right time, so it was meant to be! The 69 was the first vacuum that started me collecting. I had just moved to St. Louis, and found it along with a model 14 Lark in a resale shop. It was love at first sight! It's probably my favorite out of 40+ convertibles. If I'm not mistaking, I think that's the model that sat in Aunt Bea's kitchen by the back door on Andy Griffith. Enjoy!

It was the first Convertible

to have a white handle as opposed to the handle matching the bag, hood, bumper. My aunt had one. I KNEW I Had to get one. Well, I have 6.

Convertibles... in the bedroom, livingroom, ... around the house, around the world!

Can you tell me......

papasvacs's profile picture

When the 69 was made?

Have been looking on line and can't really find anything.

Maybe I'm looking in "all the wrong places."   wink

I'd like to know when my model 70 was made too, please.

All ya gotta do is search! cool

I searched for "convertible list" and this thread came up within the first 5 results, with production dates for most Convertibles up through about 1978.

Model 69:  produced November 1961-December 1964

That's a lovely find!  Congratulations!  The model 69 is a favorite among many collectors... really, the early 60s was the Convertible's finest hour.

Okay, even I have Hoovers in the bedroom! Let me put it this way, John, DON'T let me catch you using that Convertible in ways not defined in the User Manual! laughing

Did you get that here in Buffalo, or down in Fla?

Got it here in Cheektowaga at the City Mission Thrift store in the plaza at George Urban and Dick.

One of my favorite haunts for vacs.  Have gotten a couple there.

When I need parts I usually go to Queen City on Union Road.  Mike is very good about knowledge of the older vacs.

Interesting!

tazcatsdad's profile picture

I've found a machine or two there as well, actually.  Most of my thrift store finds, however, either come from Amvets or Salvation Army.  Once in a while, I'll find some good ones at A+ over on Abbott Rd in South Buffalo or Habitat for Humanity's ReStore on Amherst St, and sometimes I can find some at Goodwill.  Lately I've even seen some nice ones at this new place called Savers - there's one by the McKinley Mall, and a new one just opened up near where I live over on Sheridan Dr and Eggert Rd.

As for parts and repairs, my friend Tom Rosiek and his staff over at Rosiek's Vacuums on Sheridan Dr have been keeping my vintage machines in tip-top shape.

On an entirely unrelated subject ... will you and Kevin be able to attend John's October get-together?  I'm planning on being there, and I hope I'll get the chance to meet you both!

That's as good of a deal as what I got on my Model 68 a few years back.  Found mine on the 2nd day of an estate sale for $5 w/ a huge lot of bags to go with it.  No tools though.  But, I was gifted the converter, hose, and crevice tool by Fred Stachnik and Robert Seger earlier this year.  I have added the  generic all-purpose upholstery, dusting, and bare floor brushes  to make the ensemble a bit more complete.
