Skip the Hoover it's too rough. If i have learned one thing in buying used vacs is to not over pay for worn out junk. Sometimes free is too much, and i'm not joking. You must consider any number of parts individually will be more than what you paid for the vac. And if it's beat up you're, "gold plating a garbage can".
Also the best condition vacs are usually the cheapest oddly enough. Garage sale, thrift store slaes etc. Buying on Ebay roughly doubles the price because of shipping so it's best only for that exceptional machine you know you will otherwise never find that you must have. Or the rare "free shipping" vac that sells for a song, i have scored a few of those. I have noticed some people see a Dyson at Target for $490 and suddenly decide their trash picked, cut cord, garbage vac is worth $40. There is an enterprising chap here in So. Cal who has been trying to sell such a machine on Craigs for over a year now(!). Enjoy the hunt, and keep you standards up least you become over-run with costly projects.
