I have a handvac from the 80s too, I really like it. Here's a video of it, and it shows the way the fan and motor are setup which is kinda strange, it has no fan housing...

I will open it to see how it made inside of this one. It true they are pricey, but they are made in metal. |

This is the pictures of the motor, I didn't remove it because it was clean. It a normal vacuum motor. I don't know if it normal for this vacuum, but the housing get really hot. |
