Well I’ve been waiting some time for one this colour to come along so when it did I had to have it, as if fate did me a great turn the connie was on ebay and even better the chap selling it was just 20 yards from my office at work, fantastic no shipping fees.

First thing I tackled was the motor, ho boy this was in bad shape, the motor had been sitting in water for some time and had corroded quit a lot.

Stripped down and it’s strange but the bearings hadn’t seized at all, actually very smooth running.

The only problems I could find after a good clean, one, the torsion springs had completely disintegrated to nothing which hold and tension the carbon brushes, I haven’t seen this type before, the spring is inside a plastic arm which pushes on the end of the brush, the second problem being the amount of rust on and within the turbine housings, third the commutator was encrusted, which I have had to carefully scrap off and then polish it clean.

The rebuild of the motor, the cleaning of the turbine housing was a dirty job, firstly with some sand paper followed by fine wire wool and WD40 to clean and prevent further corrosion. The fans themselves where in good condition.

Some temporary spring where fitted to the brushes and I powered the motor from a 12v DC supply, runs OK and only requires a new mains suppressor.

The returned casings
The poor chap apologised for he had coloured the floatation ring white not blue and was making arrangements to re-colour it, so I placed them together and thought that looks good like that so don’t change it.

The rebuilt machine, I have no white cable at the moment, and need to find some appropriate springs for the carbon brushes as the temporary ones are not adequate at all, testing with a small black cable attached the brushes where sparking far to much.

Hey Lee

Wow what a lovely turnout, I recently got my first conny in the same colour. I also painted my float ring white, It makes the colour pop.
