If you were in the market for a brand new vacuum cleaner in the year you were born, which vacuum would you have bought? I was born in 1997, not a particularly great period for vacuums, but I think I would have bought a Kirby G4. In the likely situation I didn't have the finances to make such an expense purchase, a Panasonic or Sharp would probably be my next choice. |

I would have bought a glistening, brand new Kirby G5. The Deep Purple against the freshly polished aluminum can't be beat. Nothin' like a Pretty Shiny Kirby! |

I prefer my g4 to the g5. But i was born in 1999 so it would probably be hard to get a new g4 |

I guess I should keep my opinion on the G4 to myself... |

Nathaniel, you were born in April 1997, the G4 was discontinued in February 1997, so the current new model would have been the G5. I was born in 2000, so the model of my birth year would have been the Gsix, which is what I would have gotten if I could do that purchase... |

so I would have purchased either a 519 or 560 model Kirby (complete set) with a credit card , of course. Those models were just so beautiful when they were new. |

I am obviously older than you guys are. But here are my choices for 1952. First and foremost the end of the run of the Electrolux Model XXX. To my way of thinking one of the most classic vacuums of all time. At the time probably one of the best machines on the market. They sure sold enough of them. Everyone in the neighborhood had one.

Back in 1952, if you wanted the best for both carpet cleaning and above-the-floor cleaning, you would have an upright and a canister/tank. I would have settled for the Lux XXX and the Hoover of the time - a 29. Designed by Henry Dreyfuss. Beautiful and functional. It had a cloth shake-out bag, but still . . .

Being born in 1993 I would've gotten the current Kirby (the G3 I believe). If I couldn't afford that, then a nice Panasonic or whatever Hoover's best was at the time would suffice. |

Tyler, the Generation 3 would have been the current model at the time you were born. If you were born in July or later, the G4 would have been the current model. |

Born in 1961- Probably a Hoover#68,for downstairs, with the matching blue polisher from Polk Bros,or Goldblatts, they always had good sales on these.A Kenmore box canister, for the stairs, above the floor cleaning,& the car-A 1961 Ford Sunliner convertible,& a Kenmore upright for a spare. As I would have had a Sears charge,& couldn't have resisted one of their cool looking uprights.

Here's my Electrolux Automatic E. My paternal Grandparents had one of these, but theirs didn't have the cordwinder. They also added a Filtex several years later. When I was in Jr. High, I used to go to their house with my Aunt, and she would do their laundry (in their Easy washer) and I would vacuum, usually with the Lux. I didn't care much for the Filtex.

It would have been my first purchase, and there's no reason to think I'd buy new then, when I don't now. Let somebody else take the depreciation hit! So, I probably would have purchased a canister, since I wouldn't have a wife insisting on an upright. I guess a one or two year old Electrolux Automatic E...

Probably a Rainbow D4. Mostly because at that time it would have been one of the few vacuums that filtered extremely well since none of the other high end brands had HEPA filters yet and based on personal experience Rainbows have proven to me that if used properly they won't blow a spec of dust out. The key word is PROPERLY used. The filthy nasty rusty ones vac shops see all the time aren't used or maintained right at all.

same one my parents bought although i was born in 56 i think this machine is a little bit older than me suppose my mum decided she had to have a Hoover before me i love the way this machine takes a second or two to get up to speed and that drone when its running and of course it just gobbles up anything in its path . My grandson had exactly the same reaction as me when he first saw it i will never forget that look of absolute terror

This is a tough one, being born in 1961 it would either have been an Electrolux Model G with a PN1 power nozzle or a Whirlpool Imperial Mark canister with a power nozzle, both came in my favorite turquoise color. |

I was born in the year 2000 so the latest Kirby was a G6. I actually don't like the G6 as much as the G4. My grandma had a G4 and I loved it and I wish that I would be able to pick the G4 but since I was born in 2000 I would have to pick the G6. |

So, in say 1968, I'd have bought a Eurka Empress I Vibra-Beat, then when the Rotomatic Power teams came out, as some shops took trade ins, A model 1279, or 1290, both of which I have today. Photos are on the I'm new here thread. |

I would have bought a fully loaded D2-A with all the accessories: 4 qt pan, extra long hose - etc- No, wait a minute- I'd still get ALL of the accessories but I'd make an additional aftermarket customization: I would rig up a brown 15' electric FQ hose to work with it. First I'd remove the FQ ends, then I'd use metal tubing and epoxy to make a clean, hidden joint where the machine end would connect than I'd insert a swivel, metal curved wand into the tool end. That way I wouldn't have to deal with the external wiring and I'd get a longer hose for my D2-A.
I was born in 1980, My hypothetical D2-A would have been one of the last with the rainbow colored insert in the power nozzle applique. Oh Hell, I'd get two or three. My absolute favorite Rainbow!
