Hello VacuumLand Family,

I recently purchased a new-to-me Rainbow, "Gold Series" with the two-speed motor. Just waiting on it to get here and I am very excited.

I have a question though, do the, "Gold E2 Type 12" series have the so called, "Hurricane Motor" or do only the Platinums and new Black series (I think that is what they are called) have the brush-less motor. I assume with the Gold being a two-speed it would also be a switched reluctance type motor since it has a whine on start up, but I just want to know does it utilize carbon brushes if it is a different style motor set up.

Any input is appreciated, have a great Easter everyone!

-Justin

It has no carbon brushes

Hi Justin Although the gold series is a bit louder then the blue platinum and the black onyx. The first E Series (single speed) has the carbon brushes and that one too is quieter then the gold series. Also the seperators are different for the single speed then the 2 speed & the hepa filters too. They are all great machines and am still impressed by what the water has in it each time. I know that mine will be used overtime this alergy season. One other thing i'd like to mention from my experience since my parents first got the chrome dome model and the d4se they do last taken care of properly. We only had to get a new seperator once and I still have both machines and they work great. I hope this helps! Cheers!! Mark

I have a question

Has anyone had problems with the circuit/computer board going out? It's on all of the two speed Rainbows

I love mine! So far no problems. I bought at eBay not furnished.

Yes I have

had problems with my Rainbow E2 Series circuit board. It started not working about two months after i got the machine. It goes into full power (High speed) just fine but when you put it on Low speed sometimes it won't come on at all, or after a few minutes of leaving it on, then it comes on. I never have had it fixed because where I live there, are no Rainbow Dealers within 300 miles. I don't use it anyway since I got the newest black Rainbow. The old Rainbow just sits out in the garage in it's box. I have never had any trouble with any of my Rainbows except that one..... Dan

Thermokid

Do you know that the circuit board is roughly around $200 to replace and that Rainbow has made it to where the average repairman can't easily fix or replace it? Unless you're really good you can.

My circuit board went out on my e2 after 5 years. Started using it one day and all of a sudden it was like it was drained of power and light smoke started coming out. Of course my rainbow dealer 30 miles away had gone out of business but the next closest one was in Morgantown WV. Called him and he was here the same evening. Had no intensions of getting a new rainbow because of having to buy new aquamate, rainjet, and rainbowmate but my e2 was in such excellent condition not a scratch on anything and it was used everyday, he gave me the new aquamate and rainjet and a big discount on the rainbowmate

If it appears like this
01121764
105
It should mean it was made January of 2005. I'm pretty sure that's how it works but don't hold me to it because I'm not 100 percent sure

Interesting to hear the circuit boards going out on the 2 speed rainbow. Mine is the gold 2 speed (which I don't find to be any louder than any other vacuum) has never had an issue - but now I'm paranoid. It's coming close to being 8 years old since I bought in it '06

I have the the first E2 single speed, the Gold & the Platinum Blue, now the difference between those to is only the colour & the inside of the machine has a white sound muffle wrapped around the motor making it just a bit quieter then the Gold series. Also from what my Rainbow tech. told me is in the back above where you wrap the cord is a vent that pulls air in to cool the circuit board . . . take the dusting brush & vacuum the vent off to make sure you are getting air to pull in. That will save you all the worry about it over-heating. Also on the Gold Series, the top part of the machine seems to get more warm then the Blue due to the sound proofing inside. He also told me (when I talked to him this past Thurs) about the circuit boards he said he's only gotten one in & that was a Black Onyx one that a lady had abused. Easy fix & I hope your machines last a very long time. They are built tough & only a few items will break from use I.E. the clamps, the wheels, the door where the power hose connects to, the ends on the hose that you squeeze together, the dolly release that you step on, & mine LOL the pan when I dropped it & it cracked. Hope this helps guys! Have a good one!!! Mark

My Gold 2 speed has that white sound insulation stuff inside. I can see it clearly when I take the hepa filter off.

I sure hope a lot of usage is not the cause of the circuit board failing. If it is I'm in trouble because with a woodstove and 2 cats my rainbow gets used everyday 5 to 8 times a day. I never put it away its always sitting in the middle of the floor

Chris

That's exactly serial number posted like that.

How much should I pay foe a gold two speed with all attachments and the aquamate one? Is $250 shipping included a good deal? Also how much would it cost me to get an aquamate three to work with it? Sorry if I just hijacked this thread.

Post# 227453 , Reply# 15   4/8/2013 at 19:24 (4,035 days old) by chris (WV)

If its $250 for everything then I would say it was a steal if its in good condition. Were is it coming from? If its coming from ebay be careful my rainbow dealer pointed out to me sometimes people will put the two speed switch on a single speed and try to pass it off as a two speed. As for the aquamate if you want the aqumate 3 instead of aquamate 12 then all you will need is to get a new electrified hose that is designed to pick up water about $100 plus the price of the aquamate. If you want to get Aquamate 12 then you will need to get the two wands with built in cord and the new black electrified hose. Check out www.rainvac.com... they are everything and only rainbow. I deal with them all the time and in most cases they are a lot cheaper than my rainbow dealer and they are very nice people to deal with and they know EVERYTHING there is to know about a rainbow

A serial number written like this:
XXXXXXXX
105

denotes that the body housing was made first quarter of 05. There will only be 1,2,3, or 4 as the first digits.

The circuit board is quite tough in the Rainbow. They are warrantied for 8 years. They are very easy to replace, as it's extremely easy to work on any 2 speed Rainbow with the Hurricane (brushless) switched reluctance motor.

It would be coming from Craigslist. It has the gold series "wave" type pattern on it. I am unsure if I will buy it though as it would need to be shipped to me, meaning I'd be blindly sending money - never a secure option. I'll wait for one local I guess, despite how badly I want it.

Also, thanks so much for that link. Truly an awesome source!
