To answer my own question(s)...
looks like new carbon brushes are not much long than my old ones juging from this picture of a NOS sale i found.
The carbons on a Concept I are far longer than these Dials for whatever reason. Also looking at schematics of the motor it looks like you just pry off the base of the motor by inserting a large screw driver in the slots & go from there.
