OK, here is a picture of my Dial A Matic. This is the sellers picture, since my camera decided it didn't want to cooperate. It has a tool set, however the wands, while genuine Hoover, are not the ones that came with it. It's supposed to have the telescoping wand instead of two piece wands. Also, I believe the upholstery nozzle is incorrect for it. The machine didn't have a belt, but I had an extra Concept 1 belt and so I put that one on. It also didn't have a bag, so after searching the stores, I couldn't find regular Hoover D bags, nor Kenmore C bags that someone here recommended. I went online and found the D bags and belts and have ordered some, so they should arrive soon, however someone else recommended Dirt Devil D bags saying the would work. I bought a package of them, and while they will fit the bag chamber, the port inlet on the bag is a little too large, and don't fit tightly on the bag fill tube. Bummer! Now I am generally not known for being patient, and really wanted to try out the DAM. Inspiration struck. I have some adhesive weather stripping so I figured it was worth a try. A wrapped a layer of it around the fill tube port, and that did the trick. The Dirt Devil bag fit like a glove, and I got to play with my new machine! Nice thing is that the mod is not permanent and can easily be removed when the proper bags arrive. I guess necessity really is the mother of invention. I like it a lot. It is noisier that I thought it would be, but am very happy with it. What do you guys think of DAM / Concept One cleaners? I'd really like to hear your opinions.

This is why I'm looking for a yellow Constellation. Jimmy said he may have a yellow/brown one, and I'm gonna contact him on pay day to work out the arrangements for it. This is the sister to the DAM above, and the Constellation should fit right in. I told you I had a sneaking feeling there was a DAM in my future! Talk about "Speak of the devil'! Here I am perusing Craigslist, and low and behold Up jumps the Devil! :-)

You're correct, that upholstery brush is for a much newer Celebrity or Convertible. Yours needs the hard one with the little red rubber teeth. The toool hookup is the best. They are great, also for rugs with fringe on them. They had their faults, though. The Concept fixed a lot of tem. Great machines. You NEED GENUINE bags....Devil on a HOOVER!!??!!?? Are there sparks flying yet? |

Not yet, but fear not! New genuine bags are on the way, and my mod was temporary! Poor thing won't have to suffer long. :-) I'm gonna keep my eyes open for the proper upholstery tool, and the telescopic wand. It also needs a crevice tool, but I don't think I'll have trouble finding any of it. There are a couple of spots on the base where the paint is chipped. It isn't bad, but I'd like to touch them up. Anyone got any ideas on the best way to do that? Any suggestions are appreciated. There is one thing I don't like about both the DAM and the Convertible, and my Concept One. The cords are just too short. I like the machines, but don't understand why they would make the cords so short.

That is true, but I also feel by Hoover reverting back to a "dirty-air" system was a classic case of three steps forward two steps back. There's no denying the DAM's achille's heel (cleaner body cracking where the upper handle enters), but I would have loved to have seen what might have been if Hoover didn't sell the "clean-air" patents to Panasonic. The DAM was definitely superior for it's ease of tool conversion, and the metal base was more heavy duty than the plastic base on the Concept. I know Concept lovers agree it is superior in terms of deep cleaning ability, and it too had a long production run. Either way, both machines are becoming increasigly difficult to find parts for. What I don't understand is why production continued in the U.K. up until around 1990 and here in the states it ceased as soon as the Concept was introduced? That burgundy DAM or as it was called on the other side of the pond "Convertible" was a stunningly beautiful cleaner.

I was cruising Google looking up the Hoover model U5015, and I found this auction on ebay. Yep, it's the machine I bought. Looks like the seller tried his luck on ebay before listing it on Craigslist. I got it a lot cheaper than what he listed it for on ebay. Looking at other listings, it is obvious his original asking price was too high. With shipping, it would have been a lot more than the average person would pay for a used vacuum.
