Well I finally managed to get one of these but it's not in the greatest of shape. I need to strip it right down to nothing The handle fork is a bit twisted and the bag zip is buggered. I know it's a long shot but I don't suppose anyone has any spares for these. I want to start on this before I start the others. If anyone can help please let me know
Thanks guys
David

For a model that was around do long these are very rare, particularly this torquoise model. From teh picture the handle fork does not look too bad and it looks like the flex is in decent condition too which is a good start.

How handly are you with a needle, or so you have or know someone with a sewing machine as the zip replacement should be reasonably straighforward, although you might be hard pressed to get a torquoise one but something lihe a dress zip (it does not want to be too heavy as the material is quite light weight) in white with metal teeth should be a good substitute.

Is the handle nice and firm on the fork? Of the three that have passed through my hands (still have two - one of these and one with the later gold hood) all the handles have all been a bit wobbly.

If you ask nicely I can even post a picture with optional tool kit, which is even more rare than the cleaner itself

Hi....I cant help with spares for your Hotpoint, although I can well remember my mum owning one. It was VERY plasticky ! Lol.

But as I live in UK also (Cumbria), I wondered if you like trading vacs with other collectors ?

My email is derekkkx@btopenworld.com please feel free to contact me.

All my upright vacs are in unrestored condition, but all work

Thanks

Derek

Hi David. You have a nice Hotpoint there. I'm glad you was able to find one:o)
I have the same model Hotpoint LnE. Mine was missing the bumper but I was able to get hold of one. Only thing I need for mine is the sole plate. I put a NOS brush roll in it:o)

Like I said above these are rare. This was a lucky find on ebay, it was included in a box of bits, the main item shown being a blue Senior 638 hose. But I noticed the connecting pan buried underneath it - no other bidders, it was a VERY good purchase :)

I have always been curious about this model. It doesn't seem to fit in with the traditional styling of UK machines. I'm surprised hear these were cheaply built. The handle fork looks a bit flimsy, but everything else appears to be the usual for the 80s. The hood looks very similar to a Hoover design from the same period. It makes me wonder if Hotponit looked to Hoover for inspiration.

1980's?

...Try 1960's. The Hotpoint was something of a hybrid of a Hoover Junior and Hoover Senior. It was Junior sized, but had a fork like a Senior, also it had the dust bag on the back of course. It was also considerably cheaper to buy than a Hoover. Like Vacbear says, these were available for a good deal of years in one design or another, but are thin on the ground. Even for the price I don't think they were much of a rival to the Junior. Also I am not so sure people bothered to get them repaired. In all my years I probably only had two or three passing through my shop doorway.

Hotpoint

vacbear58's profile picture
The Light and Easy was introduced in around late 1962 early 1963 as a replacement for the rather dated Hotpoint cleaner which could trace a direct lineage back to 1930s models - in that sense not unlike the Hoover Junior. This was an all new design although it operated in much the same manner as a Junior with the dust chute travelling to the back centre of the cleaner rather than to one side.

Its main rival was the Hoover Junior, although the Hotpoint was significantly cheaper, lighter and of course it had a top fill bag, possibly the first UK cleaner to have one. Initially it was offered in pink or torquoise colourways. In around 1967, in common with many other Hotpoint appliances, the styling was updated to the torquoise model shown above.

It may have taken some styling cues from Hoover but it would have been the 65 (or rather 652 in our case) rather than any other model

Al

Here is an ad for its introduction in 1963

price

Vacbear, the price of the cleaner in that TV commercial equates to around £420 in todays money, using a conversion website I just found. That is an astounding price. How much would a Hoover Junior have cost, do you know?

I had no idea they went back that far! They still remind me of American Hoovers. The whole set up is like how Hoover was doing things in the 80s-early 90s. What does the under-side look like?

How Much

vacbear58's profile picture
Benny

Nice to see you posting, missed your input, at least in the threads I have been reading. I was going to say 26 guineas (which you and I both know is £27/6/- or in current currency £27.30) but going by this ad below, which should be roughly contemporary, it was just a shade lower.

The price difference might not seem like much but for the time it was reasonably significant, by this time the Junior 1334 had been on the market getting on for 5 years and is starting to look a bit dated. However Hoover's stranglehold on the upright market was such that any other manufacturer was going to have a hard time up against them, and Hoover also extensivly promoted their cleaners as well.

They are reasonably simple underneath with basically just the soleplate and a large plastic cover - in that respect not unlike a Junior. It operates in a similar mannner too with a horizontally mounted motor driving the brushroll. The front cover is removeable although this is only to access the belt, the tools were always connected using the pan connector on the front.

Thank you for that Vacbear

I am quite sure I have worked out the price of the Hotpoint incorrectly as it was in guineas. By my calculations the Hoover was around the same price and I was sure the Hotpoint was something of a good saving over the Hoover. Thanks for showing another interesting TV commercial. The lack of a television sent until about 1979 meant things like this are still a first for me.

A few years ago before I got my Hotpoint LnE I was at the recycling centre(Tip) and as I was getting rid of my bit and pieces a car pulled up next to me and he started unloading his stuff. I noticed a complete Electrolux 345 which I went over and asked him for and he said "sure help ya self":o)I also noticed he had a torquoise Hotpoint LnE wirth all the attachments. But I didn't have the room for any more vacs at the time so I passed on it.I wish I had took it as well now lol.

My mum had a Hotpoint light and easy, she bought it in 1968 and had it until I was about 6 or seven (75/76). The height adjuster broke and mum had to tip the cleaner forward to make the brushes contact the carpet. She said when I was a baby I screamed the house down every time she vacuumed, she ended up putting me in my pram and leaving me in the garden whilst she vacuumed. Mum had the complete tool set, she bought this cleaner as it was recommended in Which?

A bigger place would be lovely, have to wait a few years though until hubby finishes his masters.

There are a couple of collectors in Scotland, unsure if they have a light and easy though!

I have a Light n Easy in my collection. I don't know anything about it, but I assume that it dates from the early 1970s. It is white with a turquoise handle grip and furniture guard. I will try to take a photograph of it and post it on here.

You are very lucky as yours is an early variant of the L&E - which was available in pink or torquoise colourways. Could I ask you please to post a picture of the rear of the cleaner too please so we may see the switch assembly which is on the back of the handle.

Handy flex storage pocket......

paulc's profile picture
that just jogged my memory. Mum kept the polish, a duster and a stiff hand brush ( for brushing dust away from the skirting board) in the cord storage pocket.

Robin, thanks for the pic of your Hotpoint, haven't seen one in that colour before.

Vacbear,it appears from the advert showing the attachments that they connected straight into the cleaner, similar to a Junior, or have they just missed out the pan converter?

I was very fortunate to be given this machine, along with an earlier Hotpoint Junior, by an elderly friend. I just happened to visit him on the way home from collecting a Hoover.

love the original

oh my god iu still dont know why i like these so much im loving the early one i do prefer the colour of that one than the green of mine
mine has been stripped and work done on the motor but it sounds awfull it could do with a new motor the height adjuster is buggered as well as was mentioned earlier in this thread it has to be tipped forward for the brush roll to contact the carpet
if anyone has ideas on how to bodge the height adjuster please let me know

WHY OH WHY DID I GET SHOT OF THE ONE I HAD BEFORE IM SUCH A TWAT
im sure there are many of us that have gotten rid of a vacuum and regretted it some time later

the pics of the othe LnE machines are fantastic id love to come across one of the later 80s models

The Hotpoint L & E on reply #28 looks a bit like a Eureka 1400 Series from the early 1970s.

Did Hoover and/or Eureka make these for Hotpoint?  Were Hotpoint vacuums ever available here in the USA?

Could you post some pictures of the models you have in mind please. As far as I am aware these cleaners were only manufactured in the UK but we have seen a few cases where very similar cleaners turn up either side of the pond without a direct, known, corrolation between the two suppliers

Hotpoint vacs in the USA

tazcatsdad's profile picture

Floor-a-Matic, I may be completely wrong but as far as I can tell Hotpoint did have at least one or two models available here in the 'States in the early part of the 20th Century (c. 1915). If I'm not mistaken, this predates Hotpoint's association with General Electric. After GE acquired Hotpoint, they (Hotpoint) no longer made vacuums -- the only models made had either the GE or Premier name on them.
