I've been working on this D2 for about three weeks. The exterior of the vacuum looks brand new; however, the motor was a mess to work on. I'm not sure what to call this color either. It's a combination of brown and black, with brown being the dominant color. So I call it coppertone. Or is it bronze? The power nozzle hasn't seen much use too. This happens to be a three prong power nozzle.

Do you happen to have the original straight-suction rug tools with any of those machines? I've always been curious about that tool and especially about the vents on top of it. I assume the vents were part of the airflow principal behind the tool design. |

I do have three of them. One goes to a D3 and the others are for the D2 model. The D3 is made of brown plastic. The early D2 is made of aluminum. The rug tool that goes to the dark brown D2 has that same spotted paint job. In fact, the D2 came with all the tools except the crevice tool. They all appear to be unused. I'll take more photos later.

I have used the rug tool on a thick rug that I have and it glides pretty easily. I think the vents in top do help a lot with airflow and suction relief. I sometimes use it first in order to get up some of the long dog hair from my Golden Retriever and then use the power nozzle. His hair tends to wrap around the brush roll of most vacuums.

Introduced in 1964 ,this rug tool is one of the best, the vents let it breathe, and it really does pick up well. |

That darker model is the one we had when I was a kid. I think my cousin's husband (now an ex-husband) was selling them. That must have been at the time the D3 was just coming out. Sadly, mom used it some years later to clean out lazer printer cartridges... that did not work out very well. I really wish she hadn't tossed it out after, I would like to have rebuilt it.

Can I put foam inside my D2s & D4SE to make them quieter? |

The Styrofoam insulation I found inside the dome of my D2 was custom formed for the D2. I guess you could put flexible foam batting or something between the dome and the motor battle. As for later models, I guess you could put the insulation between the outside over and the motor baffle. But I think it would odd since you can see through it. My blue E2 2-speed has sound insulation that's fitted the motor. But again, it is custom formed. |

Now I'm going to try & work on at least one of my D2s; if I can still get parts (bearings, carbon brushes) |

Rainbow no longer stocks and sells the bearings for the D2. However, I know of one part supplier who still sells a replacement bearing plate. You can also still buy the lower bearing from bearing suppliers when you know the universal number. Also, you can't get the brushes anymore. However, you can upgrade to the later D3 style brush holder and carbon brush. In fact, Rainbow offers a conversion kit for that, which includes female spade connectors for the terminal wires. When you're ready to service your D2, please let me know and I can direct you to the bearing suppliers. |

I just took apart my D2 & the motor will need new bearings. Removing bearings is a bit hard to do. So, the D2 motor rebuild begins now; I already cleaned the fans & fan cases. |

Here's link to the D2 bearing plate. It's an aftermarket part, but it works just fine. CLICK HERE TO GO TO eurekastar's LINK |
