Today I got a Kirby Dual Sanitronic 80. I was so elated when i found it at the Flea Mall for $15. Unfourtunatly my elation was soon shattered when 1. I turned it over to find a FACTORY REBUILD sticker where the Serial Plate SHOULD have been. Apparently the machine was rebuilt in March 1998. They did such an OKAY job of rebuilding it I didn't suspect anything until I turned it over. And 2. My nose is currently upset because when I cleaned out the bag I found that it was FULL of dust. So my question is where can I obtain a new D80 serial plate or motor shell?

Kirby DS 80

I am not sure you can find just a Kirby DS identification plate for the bottom of your Kirby, you'd probably have to get a new motor housing for it. The Rebuild identification should still ID the unit as a DS80. I've never been bothered by rebuild ID's before as to me it's as good as original since Kirby is who originally made the machine and then Kirby did the rebuild. But, that's just me. I know everyone is different.

I am not to enthusiastic about the rebuild because it is missing all the original parts, and the serial plate. (which is a big deal in my book). Also, the "new" parts are getting worn out, i.e. Bumpers, bag, polish job, etc.

... introduced in the spring of 1965, was the first Kirby ever to have a 2-speed motor.

I LOVE the green ones! I think my mom's G5 is the least attractive of them all. I truly love the black and yellow one a few years back...

KIRBY DS80

I bought a Kirby DS80 earlier this year at a yard sale for $10.00. I took it back to work and reconditioned it and I have it on display in my Kirby office. Thought I would put up a photo...

Another...

When I rebuilt it I put wide wheels on the front and also a wide wheel on the back, the side by the emptor has a skinny wheel so the emptor will still fit...

What does it take to put wide wheels on?  Any special hardware, other than longer screws?  I've honestly never had Kirby wheels off.  Are wide green wheels readily available?

Installing the wide wheels does require longer screws. I've removed them from a few rebuilds I've acquired and I've also seen them on Ebay. However, I've never seen the wide green wheels!

All of you have very Nice D80s! Speaking of Wheels, my D80 has dual wheels in front and I thought you could get little-short screws and put on single wheels. I do prefer to have single wheels.(cheaper to buy 4 instead of 6). I going to get all the new parts from Goodvac.com. The wheels my D80 came with are the thin kind.

For wider wheels...

Kirby makes a "Wheel Extendor Screw" for putting wide wheels on older models. Only a short part at the end of the screw has threads and then the rest of it up to the head of the screw is smooth and as wide as the wheel bar on the Kirby. Makes a perfect fit. I've never had any trouble coming across any green parts for the DS80 and I believe the wide green wheels are still on my current Kirby price list at work. I picked mine up from a neighboring Kirby repair place a town over from my office. The service guy there and I trade Kirby parts as needed.

Is there a place on the Internet to buy wide green wheels?

Hmmm,...

I have never looked but I imagine they'd pop up on eBay from time to time. I'm almost certain I've seen them on there before.

From the looks of it, goodvac only sells the thin wheels. If I cant find wide wheels I'll use those.

Hmmm

I didn't find the wide green wheels on eBay. But...if you call my office I can order them for you from Kirby and run a credit card over the phone and mail them to you. It will take two days for them to come in from Kirby and then probably 3 for them to get to you in the mail. My office is Metro East Distributing in Alton, IL. It's a distributor who sells new Kirbys and we are a factory authorized service center for Kirby as well. I am the Service Master, Invetory Control Manager and Personal Assistant to the Owner.
