I have a Hoover Concept One Model U3315. I use it daily, and while using it this morning it simply shut off. There was a faint burning smell and I have a feeling the motor has died. Is this fixable? Or should I begin my search for a replacement Concept One?

The reason for the sudden motor failure could simply be worn-out carbon motor brushes that need to be replaced. You may want to look into that possibility, as they are not particularly difficult to replace. I wish you the best of luck- I also have a model U3315 from 1989, and I absolutely love it!

To aid in your search for the problem, you can also get a schematic drawing of the Concept One from the Hesco Vacuum Cleaner parts website, which I believe is www.hescoinc.com...

Thanks for the info! I took the machine apart and inspected the brushes, they seem fine. Plugged it in while I had it apart and it fired right up. Could it have overheated? It was on for less than a minute when it shut off.

If it overheated after only a minute,

that cannot be good. I know very little about the 'mechanics' of the Concepts. I have several, and, thay ARE great. They seemed to 'correct' all the flaws of our beloved Dial-A-Matics. I'd also see if I could find a 'cadaver' motor. Best of luck!

Start smaller!!

I would check the switch. Thoss flimsy slide switches went bad from time to time.

Well yes, except they reverted back to a "dirty air" system. Classic case of three steps forward two steps back. Who knows what might have been had they kept the clean air design instead of selling the patent to Panasonic? I only wish roller brushes were still available. CWP makes an aftermarket brushroll for Convertibles, but not Concepts. Kind of odd since they ceased production around the same time.

I wonder about these things as well. But, while we're at it....we could "what if" or "if only" ouselves to death. Still..............

I am curious about you comment about the flaws about the DAM. Apart from maybe the flexible pipe becoming blocked and perhaps a point of wear could not find much wrong with it. Over here they have a reputation of being weak around the handle mounting (not on any of mine though) and certainly mine seem a lot noisier than say a convertable but otherwise they seem good cleaners. I have a Concept 1 but I always preferred the DAM
