Wonderful stuff & pics.
Those 1960's Hoover Seniors are for me so incredibly stylish. It's like looking at a late 50's/early 60's american car whereby the styling is so somehow confident & just damned impressive.

No one else could have said it better. And, there are SO many from which to choose. When lots are lined up together, it's like looking at a box of "James' Salt Water Taffy".... they were /are very popular candies sold on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey. (Just in case you seemed lost on that).
They styles, color combos were endless. (the cleaners, not the candy).

Cheers for the compliment gottahaveahoove.

I must admit it's strange how a vacuum can sum up (for me)so perfectly how a country felt about itself in that era as those 60's Hoovers do. America at the time was unbeaten & full of confidence & thought it could do anything (& probably could!) A look at those Hoovers somehow says that.

You'll have to excuse me I tend to read too much into domestic appliances !

Thanks
Dave

Fab 28!! That is a 'masculine' machine, sinple, understated and ready to perform. Dave! Thanks, we, asa nation appreciate that. It was so true. But!!! Perivale certainly was no slouch, either. Ye made some wonderful stuff that helped drive HOOVER forward. And, that perfect ART DECO specimen of a building. HOOVER was at the top of the mountain. Times, greed, some unions, China.. all happened. Oneday, I'd love to stand in front of that HOOVER facade as I have often in North Canton, Ohio.It was/is 'American Pride" at its best.
Those other cleaners are great, as well. The Dial-A-Matics , (a few flaws) were phenomenol...set the pace for all the new stuff. Yes, the "Concept" seemed to clear up all of the snafus of the DAMs.

I absolutely LOVE that Concept One! My mother had the very similar U4203 when I was a kid, finished in a very warm Pale Honey and Rust Brown color scheme. She should never have gotten rid of it! But, life goes.on, and I have since found a lovely Concept One U3315-070 which has proven a wonderful addition to my own collection. Take great care of your Concept One-it is certainly a precious gem in the vacuum cleaner world!

And, I'm gonna try to make that a reality. That 150 is amazing!!! I MUST procure one of those. They are fantastic!! I would also like, someday, to get a HOOVER "Senior". One MUST have at least ONE of them. I have a fab "Junior". But, a nice HOOVER from the other side of the 'pond' would surley be a treat. Someday, when opportunity AND funds permit. That's part of the 'fun', isn't it?

Oh you have gotten me started on HOOVERS!!!!!

Boy oh boy do I love Hoovers!

Where do I start??? Some of my all time favorites. Coffee cans are my favorite of all hoovers.

Here are some of mine.

And one of the gleaming 700. Restored with a little patina left for character.

The bag is the old style spreader type. Works great.

The original parts 575.

Pretty banged up but wow does it run quiet and smooth! I keep it because it was my first coffee can, and my first all original hoover.

How bout that 305.

That bag is an original hoover 28 bag! Goes well with my mint 28. I have 3 28s and a 305 now.

Post# 183730 , Reply# 42   6/1/2012 at 23:53 (4,346 days old) by Brandon_W_T ()

And now the fab 28. Still my smoothest running hoover. I got it off ebay and had to do nothing to it. It is impeccably clean, with only a few scuffs, and runs like butter.

Post# 183731 , Reply# 43   6/1/2012 at 23:54 (4,346 days old) by Brandon_W_T ()

Moving through time we get to another one of my favorite eras. The 1950s. When the colors arrived.

My mint, all original 63, that Roger in Arizona taught me how to restore. Runs great now.

Post# 183732 , Reply# 44   6/1/2012 at 23:55 (4,346 days old) by Brandon_W_T ()

Moar. The fabulous Convertibles. I have had many over time.

This was my great great uncles model 68. I, stupidly, sold it on ebay. It was virtually unused, containing its original from factory paper bag.

Post# 183734 , Reply# 45   6/1/2012 at 23:57 (4,346 days old) by Brandon_W_T ()

And of course not as amazing as John's hoover stairs, my hoover bedroom is dwarfed by his coolness! I try hard to fit in.

Some day John! You inspire me! (don't tell my parents!)

Post# 183735 , Reply# 46   6/1/2012 at 23:58 (4,346 days old) by Brandon_W_T ()

Another very fine piece of Hoover history is their dedication to extreme quality and sturdiness.

There is no other cleaner on the face of this earth that is as solidly built as the beautiful Hoover 913.

They run very smooth, and low, and clean quite well.

Post# 183736 , Reply# 47   6/1/2012 at 23:59 (4,346 days old) by Brandon_W_T ()

And the fabulous Constellation is another Hoover staple.

Elegant and fun at the same time, and work fabulously too! My model 82 in pink, and my restored 86.

Post# 183737 , Reply# 48   6/2/2012 at 00:01 (4,346 days old) by Brandon_W_T ()

And now probably the greatest and last of hoovers quality resides within these machines.

The power drive, concept, and dial-a-matic eras.

Post# 183738 , Reply# 49   6/2/2012 at 00:01 (4,346 days old) by Brandon_W_T ()

This beauty recently escaped me. For the life of me, I can't recall what I did with it. It was a beautifully mint concept.

Post# 183739 , Reply# 50   6/2/2012 at 00:02 (4,346 days old) by Brandon_W_T ()

This Dial-A-Matic is in loan to a family friend. I received it, and restored it, but honestly all I had to do was dust it off. It's practically new.

Post# 183740 , Reply# 51   6/2/2012 at 00:03 (4,346 days old) by Brandon_W_T ()

And so concludes some of my hoover nuttiness.

I will leave you with a beautiful Hoover 68 similar to my uncles, but far cleaner! In front of the most fitting match of a stove!

Excellent work there. We ALL get our inspiration from others. I'm profoundly flattered that I could contribute SOMETHING to you. You are taking nice photos, too.BUT... you got rid of a 68 ???????????? Remind me to "slap you" when I see you in person. Well, we all 'FALL'. A learning experience. You're sorry and you'll never do that again, right? Your endeavors are, in a word, "impressive".

WELL, it seems very hard

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
to find one 'intact". It was the last convertible to have the handle painted to match the hood, bag, etc. 69 came with a white handle, and "Convertible" on the lens.
It is also the vacuum FEATURED in the Jerry Lewis/Agnes Moorehead comedy, "Who's Minding The Store?" That was a very 'big deal'.

That's probably because

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
the 'diving board' (bag clip) snapped the handle in half. That happened sometimes, causing HOOVER to go back to the spring.

Hoover coffee cans

Were these polished up to a shine when new?

I've got a 700 to restore, was wondering if you shine it up like a Kirby.  It's in pretty rough shape, the rubber wheels and bumper have disintegrated.

Shining Coffee Cans

truckerx's profile picture
Most of the coffee-can Hoovers, which would include the model 700, were finished in bright polished aluminum and can be re-polished. A couple exceptions might be some earlier and more primitive models with rough-castings (as shown). Then there was the model 541 in 1923 that was introduced with a satin finish, but I've seen some polished as well.
The attached photo, as an example, is of a rough-cast Hoover Baby c.1922. Hope this helps.

It beautiful in its own way. Heck even for being cheaper than the 800, I still love it just as much!

I would kill for one of those bags too!

Oh and John, yer darned tootin I won't ever make a mistake like I did with the 68! It was a big loss on my part. Financially you would say the opposite. I think it brought me over $200 on ebay. You can't find them like that anymore, all intact.

I nearly fainted when I saw Greg Nunn's example. It very well could have passed for a Vault machine.

with good wheels for parts. Some other older-model Hoover wheels might fit. The good news is that Hoover produced a lot of 700's. It was considered their "super-cleaner" and very popular 86 years ago - many are still in service. I don't consider them to be rare. They appear on Ebay frequently.

Fantastic sketches, etc..That last 68 was photographed in Robert's and Fred's house. Greg Nunn is great friends with them. They restored it. It was at the last convention. here it is, between my two. John Gregory had the "vault" machine. It's now at TTI, on display.

You never cease to amaze me. What a beautiful monochromatic display of blues with the 68 in forefront of that magnificent mid-century range.

Beautiful Penncrest!!

That stove with the 68 in front of it is actually at Greg Nunn's house. Thats a 1959 Frigidaire Custom Imperial range. The vacuum belongs to Fred and Robert now, but was in the possession of Greg for a while here in omaha.

That's quite an assortment of Hoover Juniors. It's too bad a headlight model never found it's way to "the other side of the pond."

Dear John- (The Hoover guy) from Pennsylvania-

Looking at your posts, I am quite amused by the fact that we as vacuum cleaner collectors also treasure the fine art or appreciation of antique furniture.

Your collection of Victorian style and hand carved furniture as seen in the postings, are truly amazing. You have excellent taste and put the items together with great detail in an era of precision, hence not just art deco with Victorian and make it look like a fruit salad.

Well Done.

Adrian, at the same time, I can walk into a room full of beautiful, priceless antiques and art, but if there's a vacuum cleaner in there that will be the first (and possibly only) think I'll notice and pay any attention to!

Adrian,

I appreciate that compliment,  VERY much. Some of those pics were taken amidst renovations, thus. the mess.  Things are getting better.  Of course,  a HOOVER adds a nice decorative touch in any room.  Things are a little better here now.

recent restoration Hoover 652

nazard's profile picture
Today I finally get my oldest Hoover 652 completely restored.
The guy who did all this work had to use some part from an other vacuum.
Now, this one works like a brand new machine.

some parts come from 652 A other parts from 652 E

The power of suction is unbelievable. Some days I'll find the complet carpet inside the bag....
The restoration work by the guy is really good.
I gave to him another work to do... to restore an old Hoover 612.
He is slow to restore but the result is perfect.

I saw an old blue Hoover 638 for a cheap price. I do not know yet if I want it or not. I prefer my 652 models.

And, I DID get your email about those 2 "Seniors".

I have 2 of them. The "British" cleaners I'd like to get are: a Senior "ranger", and a "Dirtsearcher". Someday.....

John, if I had the funds I would buy them and send them to you myself!!  Heck, if I had the funds I'd come over WITH the cleaners to visit.  But alas, just now I do not.

Hi John

nazard's profile picture
The British Senior ranger is not too difficult to find in Europe but shipping to US could be very expensive
I've never seen one in good condition.
I saw a Hoover 638 for sale (30€) but I do not know if it works well
I also saw a nice Hoover 612 but too expensive for me... 80€
