A friend was holding a garage sale today and I pre-asked if he had any vacuums.. he said yes, but didn't know what it was, typical..so here it is.. a schmutzy Concept One in dire need of a face wash.. Works perfectly and only needs one replacement headlight and the cord rewinder retracts but won't stay out when extended... anyone ever fix that?

That is a nice looking concept one. I always liked the blue one, but it seems like every time I search for one on Ebay they are all green. The cord winder sounds frustrating but I'm sure one of the many hoover experts will have a solution for you. I'd like to see what it looks like when your finished cleaning it. I bet it will look real nice without a whole lot of work.

Pete,

Sounds like the "brake" mechanism is faulty. You can easily correct it. Getting to the cord reel is a bit more difficutlt though. The cord winder is not difficult to work on at all. A lot of people that have these just knot the cord and leave it out all of the time...yikes! That has to be a form of vacuum abuse!

I have the same model, which had the same problem. The brake pad on the cord reel was bad. It was also covered in tobacco tar and the brushroll was so wound with hair that it was too thick to turn in the housing.

What was the first prize ribbon for? I see you have a Concept II as well. I haven't seen one of those in ages, none have turned up for me. Looks like we have the same blue Eureka as well.

It won the 65-85 beater bar vacuum division of the cleaning competition at the 2006 VCCC convention in St. Louis.

My Concept 2 is in fairly bad shape, the drive is very jerky.

Mike

That is the "help mate" you take the cord out of the machine and put it in to that hand vac. it is no more than an electric dustbuster!

As opposed to a non electric dustbuster?

IMHO I think the Concepts and the essentially similar PowerMaxs were the epitome, the apex, the acme, the highest of heights for Hoover performance

Good save, Pete. These Concepts are probably my all-time favorite when you really want to get something really filthy - really clean. I have a power-drive, later version with the "surge" feature, but it's a workhorse. Jeff P. gave me an earlier non-power drive Concept One and with the new brushes he put on it, you don't even need the power-drive, it will propel it self across the room if you don't hold on tight!

Use it in good health!
