wanted hoover 262

Checkrate/Likes hi guys i know this might be a big ask but im after HOOVER 262 my nan had one from new and when she bought it she got the dustette free with it in 1976 she gave it to my mum and bought a hoover junior u1012. i loved the 262 with its huge bag and the hum it made on the carpet it finally gave up the ghost in around 1981 when my my mum bought a freedom 1000 electronic it came with plastic pipes so mum complained to hoover and got the whole replaced with metal ones, shortly after my grandad died and my nan came to live with us so that meant the junior 1012 came as well so mum sold the freedom and used the junior which lasted until around 1987 when she bought her first turbopower. i fell in love with the 262 and was gutted when it eneded up in a skip outside our house before we moved and id love to get my hands on another on can anyone help me please thanks guys dave xxxxxx

Checkrate/Likes Hi Hi Dave, Hasn't there been a few Hoover 262s on Ebay recently?? It's nice when you hear a story like yours behind why you are after a particular vacuum cleaner. The only thing I noticed is when you said "my nan had one from new and when she bought it she got the dustette free with it in 1976" How can she of had a new 262 in 1976 as the Hoover 262 is quite a bit older than that isn't it?? I'm sure you will get one. I have one but the top of my rubber handle grip as gone funny.So that will need changing at some point. James:o)

Checkrate/Likes *Hoover 262* There was what appeared to be quite a good example on ebay that just finished on Sunday past - if I remember right it sold for �51.00. They do crop up from time to time although they are not all that plentiful for although, in theory, they had a long production run, six years of that was WW2 and from 1945 - 1949 a great deal of production was exported, and they were not cheap cleaners either. James, if you insert a full stop between "it" and "in" it will make more sense. Quite something to go from a 262 to a 1012, a lot lighter but SO MUCH NOISIER! Al

Checkrate/Likes *james* sorry thats my punctuation or lack of lol it was 1976 my nan bought the junior 1012,and gave my mum the 262 and the dustette as nan got the tools with the junior and decided she didnt need the dustette any more. my nan got her 262 in 1939 it was one of the first i remember mumtelling me that my nan had hers ordered as a friend up the road worked for hoover and told my nan that they were producing a new vacuum so nan kept with her previous hoover untill the launch of the 262 it was used evryday right up until it died in 1981 now thats what you call quality my nan looked after it so well it even had the original bag on it when my mum threw it the skip SACRALIGE then as i say in 1976 nan bought her junior 1012 the week after i was born, saw the few on ebay but at the time didnt have any spare cash just had a new bathroom fitted and that took all the money we had so got to start saving again, hence im selling a few cleaners out of collection as id rather have the 262 than some of the others i got david

Checkrate/Likes *Here you go* I would not hang about with this, the cleaner seems in good condition and the price is not bad for the complete kit. Checkrate/Likes The memories that this conjurers up does gladden one's heart. My mother had her 262 in the early 1950's. She was housekeeper to a family who were emigrating and she bought their cleaner off them, which was the 262. I do not know how old the machine was when mother bought it, but I know it was relatively new for that period in time. So maybe a five or so years old perhaps. It looked like brand new. I think maybe it had been very well looked after, I am not sure but I think it would have cost a lot of money and would have been a luxury purchase, so soon after the war. I don't know who attended to the cleaning for this family before my mother took over, but certainly she always took great care of everything, including the vacuum cleaner.

Checkrate/Likes Does anyone happen to know why the 262 had the rating plate on the front? It seems to have been done with some thought, as though a very deliberate design feature or such. But that, along with the gaping hole in the front where one would expect to see a lens covering the light bulb, does nothing for me.

Checkrate/Likes The 262 is truly the most beautiful Vacuum Cleaner HOOVER ever made. If you can find one, you will be very lucky. I hope to find one myself some day.

Funny enough, the 262 is probably my least favourite Hoover upright cleaner - I have always considered them very ugly, although I know that under the hood it is as effective as any other - personal preference I suppose. On the other hand I have always liked its somehwat more upmarket brother - the 160, which to my eyes looks a great deal more elegant. Al

Checkrate/Likes There was only one word my mother would describe her 262 as being. Heavy. I don't remember her complaining about it's weight during operation, but she reguarly winced at the thought of picking it up. It's been a good deal of years since I last saw one so I can't say whether or not it was quite as heavy as mother made it out to be.

Checkrate/Likes *262 on ebay right now* Although it does not have the original bag, but with tools and instructions its not a bad starting price. They say it has original flex and two pin moulded plug too (I had trouble with the original flex on mine). In actual fact it would be better to remove the plug as it really should be earthed - it was supplied with a ground wire - the plug could always be used with a later, double insulated cleaner Al CLICK HERE TO GO TO vacbear58's LINK on eBay
