Thankfully, it's not the end of the world when this happens. Check the motor's brush carbons. Since this is an old machine, the carbons may be worn beyond service limits. Good though, you caught it early. Try dressing the commutator with some emery cloth or a "Comm-stick" and replace the brush carbons. Another problem, but unlikely, could be the armature itself. Hope this might help.
