What is the correct way to remove the spider gear if the brass nut is frozen on?,how should I wedge the motor shaft to get a better grip on the brass nut?.I want to remove the lower fan hub to clean the fans and replace the bottom bearing. The machine is a D4C.built in 1986.

Sorry for the delay in reply- I didn't see this pop up.

There are three options, no four to repair this:

1) soak the brass nut in a lot of WD and hope like H3ll it will loosen up

2) Jam a flathead screwdriver in the spider, and try to remove the brass nut that way. A pair of vice grips on the back end of the motor shaft also work.

3) Remove the motor, remove carbons, remove top cooling fan, remove carbon housing and coil assembly. Grip the armature with a rag and try turning the brass nut off with a pair of vice grips.

4) Grind the brass nut off on a bench grinder being VERY careful not to damage the armature shaft (I do NOT recommend this one unless you know what you are doing!!!!)

Got the thing apart

The nut came off removed the clips placed a drop of oil in the lower bearing and got it all back together.Do I still want a D4-SE? what a job.

I would use bearing grease rather than oil. The oil will heat up and dry out faster creating a gunk. Best thing for bearings is to take them out, remove the seals, clean with WD-40, and then pack with bearing grease.

Thank You

I will do that next time. I may find that pristine D4-SE performance that I will rebuild for my collection,or perhaps I will just be happy with my three restored Kirby's,Electrolux hospital G,and my two Filter Queens.

Thank you for all your help
