Well, the new Oreck model came in while I was at the convention and couldn't wait to get back to see it as I work for them part-time. It's called the Edge...totally new design, very handsome machine, bigger motor, all new brushroll, variable motor control, and yes, a hose and extendable crevice tool onboard! It weighs more than the 9lb. Orecks, probably closer to 15-16lbs., but nonetheless, addresses the consumer wanting a hose attached to the machine. It's supposed to be friese carpet friendly, our others have issues with that, depending on the the length and density of the carpet. It still comes with an all new design compact canister with tons of suction, heavier and bulkier than the old one, but an upgrade nonetheless. I looked at the factory label and it said Oreck, Cookeville, Tn. However, I looked at the box it came in, and here's where the thread title comes from, and I didn't say crap, if you get my drift, it's made in CHINA. I'm sooo sad about that, but I'm sure it's all about the bottom dollar on manufacturing. All the other uprights are assembled in Cookeville, I just thought the new one would too. It seems to be a very well constructed machine, although haven't taken one apart. They retail for $799.99 with the canister and has a 10 year warranty and 10 free tune-ups like our other top of the line Platinum/Pilot. I will still demo and sell it like it's the next best thing to sliced bread, but I will cringe if they ask about it's origin. Oh well....

I love Oreck crap

$99 to put in a motor at my store. We have 3 Oreck stores in the area and the crap they sell pays for my grocery shopping every week.

I think I put 4 motors in Orecks this week, 6 brushrolls, sold maybe 15 belts and probably 10-12 packs of bags. I'd hate to see Oreck roll out anything other than the crap they have been making since David started the company!

I think it looks nice... bet it's easier to push than the other ones due to those big back wheels. I don't think an Oreck should have on board tools though.... the whole point of an Oreck is something really light weight, they have always tried to be different.... now they are copying other manufactures, first a swiveling model to compete with the Dyson Ball and now this!

I think what we are looking at here, friends is the beginning of the end for Oreck. Oreck is synonymous for the "8 lb. hotel upright" and "made in America." The Edge, Oreck Halo, Pro 14T, and new commercial line are anything but. When Oreck released the Air 7 (the first air purifier made in China), the result was garbage. I had tons of customers asking me if they could still purchase an Air 6 NIB. Since moving from Biloxi, Miss. to Cookeville, Tenn., it would seem as if Mr. Oreck has made one bad decision after another. Even the still "American made" cleaners now are built with components made in China. It may well be only a matter of time before Oreck gets sucked up by TTI as well. Just my two cents....

Clarification....

I just want to clarify that my response was "oh crap", and again, not the word I used, but I was disappointed to see it came from China. I didn't say the machine was crap. Actually it appears to be a well built machine, with a lot of pluses compared to previous models. All in all, any vacuum only lasts/performs as well as they are taken care of, kind of like cars I guess. I see 12-14 yr. old Orecks come in for yearly service and perform fine, but I've seen 2-3 yr. olds come in looking like they've been drug behind a truck. As far as the air purifiers, I've been with Oreck five years and have had little complaints about the Air 7's,8's,8.5s, and there again, we had a call yesterday with someone that's had one for four years and NEVER CLEANED it, gross, I hope I don't get that one when it comes in! Judging from what I've seen of our lightweight competition, the Edge seems better built, construction wise, but time will tell I guess. Couldn't be any worse than any of the other "imports". I was in a friends vacuum shop yesterday, who services all brands, is a Hoover and Dyson authorized repair service, and he said that they are helping keeping him in business with warranty reimbursements. One woman brought in a 2 day old Hoover Windtunnel T-Series, with issues alreay. Oh well...and the beat goes on.

I can tell you firsthand, half of the Oreck Air 8's we got new from the factory made a "chirping" noise on the silent setting. As a precaution, we had to take each one out of the box, test it on the bench and repack it just as a precaution the customer wasn't getting one that was defective. At one point, Oreck was giving away a free sound machine with each air purifier. We all joked about how they did that to cover the noise it made on the so-called "silent" setting. IMHO, the Oreck Air 3/5/6's were far better in terms of build quality than the Air 7/8/8.5's that followed....

Rick,

Sorry you missed the unvailing. Truly, Oreck makes a good machine. I love my XL21 and opposite of what many people think, it does a good job.

Wondering what the tool suction is like on the new model as well.

It amazes me how people take care of things...of course if they are willing to take pictures and post them on Ebay and not even just the area...what make us think they will take care of a vacuum!!!
