Hello friends,

I'm looking for a new vacuum for my grandmother. She bought an el-cheapo Eureka and it's now trash. She doesn't abuse it or anything, it's just junk to begin with.

I told her I'd go looking for a new vacuum for her. I want one with great reliability, but it also must be bagged, and be very lightweight. No canister vacuums or bagless vacuums.

I'm a Kirby guy, so I'm not too familiar with new lightweight machines.

I've been thinking about getting her a Hoover Platinum bagged upright. What do you guys think about this one?

What are some recommendations you have?

Thanks!

~Tim J.

Well for a good lightweight cleaner I'd say an Oreck. Just get one used to save money, I once found on at the Goodwill for $20 and sold it for $140 on ebay!

Oreck also have longer warrentys on them compared to Riccar. I'd stay away from Hoover right now. They have recalled their Windtunnel Ts and they are China/Mexico machines. Oreck is at least made in the USA.(although they parts come from China).

Riccar Supralite! You and her woould be very impressed with this machine. It has very stiff bristles and really pulls itself across the carpeting, and it is very light and easy to maintain

The Hoover Platinum you mentioned is top rated by Consumer Reports. From time to time, I also think about trying this Sanitaire out.

Go with the new Hoover soft-bag Platinum upright if...

eurekaprince's profile picture
you can afford the price and want a highly-rated lightweight upright. It actually performs better than the similar Oreck. The Oreck XL Platinum does not deep clean carpet as well as the Hoover Platinum UH3001,and costs $200 dollars more (though you also get a lightweight mini canister for that price).

If you need something more economical, the highly rated Hoover Tempo bagged upright is excellent, quiet and easy to use. It's only $90 at Best Buy.

Hoover Tempo

I think it does perform well, but I wouldn't consider it quiet. Just my opinion.

The Hoover also comes with a canister... I like the looks and sound and feel of the Hoover, but I understand why some may have trepidations about its reliability and quality. Orecks are screamers, so buy her ear plugs if you go with one of those. I like my Oreck... it's loud and I don't think it cleans deeply, but it's nice to pull out for a quick pick up. I think for quality, Riccar is the way to go.

The Riccar Supralite RSL3 was not as highly rated as the Hoo

Consumer Reports. The primary reasons are that it is noisier than the Hoover, is not as easy to handle, and it does not deep clean carpets as well. BUT - it's emissions are a bit cleaner than the Hoover. It is also about 50 bucks cheaper than the Hoover, but as Vacuumfreeke says, you also get a mini canister with the Hoover for the $400 price.

Samsung Quiet jet

I would go with a Samsung Quiet jet upright. Very affordable, durable, great value for the price, powerful, light, easy to use. I sold alot of these units in the vac shop to older customers to fit those same needs. Check out the Samsung website.

Eurekastar

That Sanitaire looks nice, It looks like the Eureka Ultra design, it even takes the Z bags.

That Samsung looks little like a dirt devil or bissell!

some one has asked this before and I hate to say it but Bissell makes a nice bagged machine. cheap, lightweight, and reliable these machines seem to have pretty good suction and usually last a few years. I dont have one but I have sold several of them and people who I sell them to absolutely love them... if you want something really good then riccar is the way to go. but like oreck the riccar is rather noisy.

Hey there Brad.....

Believe it or not, the only Samsung vac available in the USA is a little robot vac. The Quiet Jet upright is only available in Canada. I really don't know how Samsung has managed to make a line of vacs available to the smaller Canadian market, but discontinued them in the larger US market - strange. :-)

Hay Tim!

I think that the hoover platinum would be a great option, but as some people said before you can get an oreck. I recommend you a Miele stick vac, in my opinion, it's so much better by far than the hoover or the oreck, not only for their quality, these ones are more versatiles and the suction is terrific! Unfortunately, Miele vacuums are little bit expensives, but you can be sure that your grandma would like it. Another options are the Sanitaire S782 from the lightwaight range, and two more cheaper options are the Emer Raffaello or Donatello stick vacs.
Hope it could help you!=D

Most of Bissell's vacuums are actually made by Samsung. The Bissell "PowerForce" is identical to the Samsung Quiet Jet upright, other than the colour.

I'd suggest either a Sanitaire S634 or a Eureka Boss 1934 both of which are lightweight and hearty machines. I'd go with the Boss unless you want the longer cord, chrome handle and extra height adjustments that the Sanitaire has. The only bad thing about these is that you really have to upgrade the brushroll right off the bat to a VibraGroomer II as the stock brushroll is a cheap wooden one with plastic beater bars. Either of these cleaners should give long service as long as they're maintained.

Hey There,
Have you looked into the Dirt Devil Featherlites? Dirtdevils are good cleaners, but they are loud and the brushroll will probably need changed once a year. I was impressed with the ones I have used. Sadly, I have not yet been able to use a Hoover Platinum or an Oreck so I can't say how they perform. I know that when I tested a Riccar Supralite I was not overly impressed, especially for it's price tag. It didn't really clean any better than any of the other vacuums I looked at. I don't think the Dirt Devil should be over a hundred dollars or so. Sanitaire's are good too! I still have one from 1996 and it still runs well. Although, the bag had to be replaced and it's needed a new fan and brushroll, but it's still worth it, I'd say. If your grandmother is gentle and careful about what she vacuums, it should be a good choice too.

Piano_god, thanks for pointing out the link between Samsung and Bissell.... I remembered hearing years ago that Bissells DigiPower canister was a Samsung, and it was obvious after seeing the Samsung version. I didn't know their other machines were also made by Samsung. I wonder which ones are and which ones aren't!

mb_1981, I'd completely forgotten about the Eureka 1934A! What a good suggestion. I think it would perfectly fit the needs in this situation. Powerful, light weight, super easy to push, and reliable. I don't think Orecks are that easy to push even though they are light.... the wheels are too small I think... the Hoover Platinum is easy to push though. The only thing she may not like about the 1934A is the super short cord, and lack of quick release cord wrap. I smile for hours every time I use mine... it is the only Eureka I use regularly, and I sing its praises every time. The bags may not be quite as easy to change as they are on an Oreck or Riccar or Hoover Platinum, but she's probably had similar vacuums all her life and is familiar with the F and G set up.

After having the Hoover Platinum Lightweight, I would really recommend it. The suction is great, and it has pretty good filtration. If it is used on low pile carpets, it will do GREAT.

Go with the Eureka 1934A

kloveland's profile picture
Go with the Eureka 1934A it’s a great vacuum cleaner. I just got a used one from Ebay and I have really enjoyed it. The only complaint that I have is the handle is plastic. However, if it does break a metal handle from a Sanitaire may fit. Any vacuum cleaner shop or janitorial supply should have these handles in stock, since the Sanitaires are so common. Attachments can be purchased for above the floor cleaning. The vacuum, attachments, extra bags and belts can be bought on Amazon.

The cord is also pretty short so you will need to use an extension cord. If you are skilled with wiring you could wire in a new cord for the vacuum. Right out of the box the vacuum will be fine, you can always add a metal handle and a longer cord later.

I think the brush roll in the vacuum is okay. It is one of the last modern vacuums to have beater bars and they really make a difference.
