Last week, while at Goodwill, I came across this vacuum with a pricetag of $8.99! Remarkable condition and in pink, no less with a garish pink paisley bag! I'll take a picture and post if I can get someone in the office to show me how to put on computer so I can post here.
Questions - what years were theis model made? Can an F&G bag be used in place of the type c bag? When trying it out (even the headlight works!), I found that it would bog down in the middle position of the hight adjuster but in the high position it rolls over the carpet on the forward stroke and works on the carpet in the reverse stroke. Also noted that the back of the cleaner went down going forward and lifted in reverse. Is this normal?

I have 3 of them.

I can't pinpoint the EXACT dates, but... circa 1974. It was a quality cleaner... top of the line. You got a great deal. It isn't "normal" for it to sink and lift like that. Maybe it's the carpet??
They made 4 machines in that "style" bag. ...different hoods, different colors in those bags, but same design. Nice find.

Use "C" bags.

Hey, John

This carpet is top of the line, builder's special, buck ninety-eight a square yard! Installed! :-) I didn't think it was normal for the up and down motion but it's been a long time since I've used a Hoover. I'll try it on the flat pile carpet in the office this week after I get some bags to see if it does that again. I'm just totally blown away by the condition of the unit! It does have the date 11/84 marked on the bottom which I'm assuming was a rebuild date? Does the tool converter go in the back of the machine? There's a slot there which looks like it would hold the converter. Anyone out there have a tool converter to fit this style Convertible?

This is what I get for missing my trips to Vero! Good for you, it ended up in a good home, sounds really groovy.

F&G bags

If it has the more narrow and smaller outer bag, the F&G bags may not work. I've tried that before, and the small inner space can pinch off the fill tube, not allowing debris to get into the main part of the bag. At some point, Hoover enlarged the outer bag (while still using Type C inserts). I've heard that with the larger outer bag that F&G bags will work. You got a great bargain!

Change sweeping direction

My former rental condo had what I would assume was similar "grade" carpet. Most of my machines would jump or not make good contact when moving in one direction but sweeping in a different direction worked just fine. Say it jumped going north to south I would switch to west to east.

Don't beat yourself up over this

Alan,
I wouldn't beat myself up too much over this (unless, of course, that turns you on!) vacuum. I seem to remember several great buys you've made over the years. I feel like I should get out my polyester double knit clothes and Beatle boots to use the machine! It really is groovy, as we used to say, with that paisley bag.
Funny thing about this is that all that morning I had an urge to stop at the Goodwill store on Oslo Road. Not the main store but the smaller one. I can't remember what Dave called it but I wonder if I've developed it as to finding vacs.

I need discipline

But that's for another thread, or site.....

Your machine has that difference that would have caused me to buy it had I found it first. I'll have to check out the Oslo Road location, maybe they have other things that I've been seeking for years. And yes, I've found some things of various descriptions in the past three years that have tickled my fancy. At the moment, I have to be really careful, I'm going to be dispersing an estate, with nothing of value to me, except two old cats and a cat with a brain problem.
