So, I decided to use this wonderful cleaner to vacuum my house tonight...

I have to start by saying that this is an INCREDIBLE machine. I always forget just how well it cleans, until I use it. This machine was purchased as a gift by my grandparents... for my parents, sometime in 1989--early/mid autumn... I think. I remember they bought it at Sears, and that it was quite expensive. It was time for a new vacuum, because we had just gotten new carpeting, and well... you know how that goes.

I had always had mixed feelings about the machine when I was younger. I thought it was incredibly heavy (which it is), and I never liked how short the hose was (the original hose, which I do still have, is only about 6' long). I did think the remote controls and the 'gas pump' style grip were cool. At that time, I was used to using uprights... having had a Convertible prior to this. We got this at a time when I didn't really have a vacuum cleaner collection (can you believe such a time existed?), so a canister vacuum was new territiry for me.

Fast forward a few years... as my collecion grew--and I started amassing vacuum cleaners--and doing all of the vacuuming--this seldom got used. It was always my father's vacuum of preference. Still, how often did I let him vacuum...? :-)

I have always had it as a part of my collection, but I would say it sat, unused, for a good 8 or so years. The biggest part of why I didn't like using it was the short hose. It wasn't until I started working at my current job that I regained interest in the machine. I realized that one could in fact purchase a replacement hose...(for the tune of around $90-employee cost) that was about 8' long. So I did. And have used the cleaner a handfull of times over the past few years (when I was living at my father's house).

Another thing that I discovered when I used it the last few times was how obnoxious the exhaust air smelled (that lovely dog scent). I had also noticed how much dust leaked through the 'type M' bag, and clogged up the secondary filter. Oh, how I wish that Hoover made an Allergen filtration bag for this cleaner.....

Fast forward again, to a few weeks ago. I decided to pull the cleaner down, off of the shelf, and give it a good once-over. It had been a bit scuffed up from years ago, and I wanted to make it look pretty once again. I changed the smelly bag, and the secondary filter. I got an idea--and made my own Filtrete bag for it! (See pictures below)

So, I used it tonight, and when I was done... not a spec of dirt on the secondary filter. And DANG! I'm always just blown away by how much suction this cleaner has... In my opinion, the best canister vacuum that Hoover ever made, if not overall, one of the best vacuum clenaers to ever have rolled off of the assembly line in North Canton.

Enjoy the pictures...

~Fred

My home-made Filtrete bag...

I took a Type M bag, and a Filtrete type Y bag, and CAREFULLY tore the cardboard collars off of both bags. I took the collar from the type M bag, and glued it to the Filtrete bag using fabric glue! Yahoo!

The bag installed...

Not a perfect fit, but it'll do.

That was great Fred, such a beautiful machine. I love the sound of the motor starting and stopping.

Filtrete conversion

Great idea Fred, will try it on mine, as I have a dog also. I love my Dimension also, that was such an effective powernozzle, and loved the total control handle functions. I also had the French? version in rust, gave it to a friend who destroyed the hose, and got the machine back. I ended up gifting it to a fellow collector. Can you imagine if they would put Quadraflex powernozzle on the new Constellation, what an awesome combination that would be.

The Dimension 1000 was like my "Red Ryder BB gun" when I was a little kid - only I never got one. I asked for it for at least 3 Christmases but I don't think Santa was down for spending $300+ when we already had a few vacuums.

Fast-forward to college, when I found a gray one sitting next to a dumpster at a Washington DC apartment complex. I didn't care how much of a freak I looked like, carrying it back to my car in the dark in DC. I finally had my Dimension!

That is a beautiful cleaner, Fred. I saw one just like it at a shop over in Iowa not long ago but it was beat to hell and missing just about everything...
