Co-starring Hoover

Although not contemporary, the best role of a vacuum in a movie has to be
1963's Jerry Lewis vehicle called "Who's Minding The Store?" Lewis plays a haples
dept. store employee who creates havoc while bumbling from one department to the next. The final scene involves Jerry performing a minor "adjustment" to a society matron's Hoover giving it hurricane power. The Convertible proceeds to suck up practically everything in the store until the bag is the size of the Hindenberg
Despite all the inspired silliness there is surprising product placement of major appliance manufacturers everywhere.

What kind of hand vacuum cleaner was Jack Nicholson's character's wife using when she died?

What about that great scene in Mr. Mom when "Jaws" the vacuum cleaner is trying to eat his son's blanket (wooby)? I like how the bag explodes
There is that scene in Mrs. Doubtfire when he/she is vacuuming with a Hoover upright and the attachment hose is plugged into the base! She is so busy dancing that she does not notice that her cleaner is set up for tool use
I am sure that there are many other vacuum scenes out there...does anyone remember any others

Yeah, I've probably watched Mr. Mom at least 200 times just for that one scene! It was a bastardized Kirby Classic. I thought it was so cool how Michael Keaton modified it for remote control use
Tom, have you ever seen the 1960 Film "Our Man in Havana" starring Alec Guinness? In the film, he plays a Hoover dealer in Cuba who invents a machine called the "Atomic Pile vacuum cleaner." I haven't seen the film in a loooong time, but I remember seeing the Constellation, as well as several Convertibles

The Coneheads

Does anyone remember the scene from the movie Cone Heads when the mother begins vacuuming the rug. She takes the hose, puts it in her mouth and starts vacuuming. I thought that was pretty cool. Does anyone remember the brand of power nozzle she used? Tim

Anyone remember the movie "Hope Floats" with Sandra Bullock and Harry Connick Jr.? In that movie Sandra's character gets stupid drunk one night and the next day her mom wakes her up by running her "frankenkirby" right next to her bed. It looked to be some sort of older sanitronic styled model with a gold bag from a classic on it. If I remember correctly, it still had the classic patch on it. Her mom ends up leaving the vac running in her room, leaves and Sandra has to roll out of bed and goes over and yanks the cord out of the wall. Also, in "Mona Lisa Smiles" with Julia Roberts and Kirsten Dunst, Kirsten's character is posing in her home for some pics as the perfect little housewife for some sort of womens magazine (this movie was supposed to take place back in the late 50's to early 60's I think) and in one farily quick shot, she is standing in her living room posing with her Kirby as she is running it. Again, an older sanitronic styled kirby or maybe even older with some sort of reddish, brown colored bag on it.

Bewitched -TV Show

In Bewitched, Samantha Stephens used a Hoover Dial-a-Matic Model 1118 numerous times throughout the series eventhough Mommy dearest Endora always seemed to do something to the poor thing. BTW, that is Elizabeth Montgomery (Samantha Stephens) on the front page here with the Dial-a-Matic :)

The Hoover 1100

compactelectra's profile picture
The first Dial-A-Matic. Since Jeff Parker (who sold me this machine) isn't posting here (even though I asked him to) I will ask Tom Anderson to give us the lo-down on this machine. It was the first Dial-A-Matic (we refer to as DAM.) It is unusual in a couple of respects. The brushroll goes backwards, and it doesn't have a height adjustment. They had a few bugs to work out, but it was the one (I believe) that Samantha used in "Bewitched." You see I also have a later one. I love these machines and they were the first Hoover "clean-air" machines meaning that the dirt went through the bag before the fan. The tool suction wasn't bad either.

Tom - should the actual hose for this machine match the short one between the base and the bag?

One of The Problems

compactelectra's profile picture
With this first machine was that that short hose from the brushroll used to clog and was difficult to clean out. They changed it so that you could easily disconnect it to clean it out.

Hoover Dial-A-Matic

Samantha's DAM was a model 1100, as was major Nelson's from "I Dream of Jeannie"

The 1100 did not have the full bag indicator or an easily removable nozzle hose. The ductwork inside the bag door was also smaller, so the poor things suffered from frequent clogs.
The owners manuals instructed users to set the carpet suction between medium and low.
One of the most interesting facts of the rarly DAM is the backwards spiral of the brush roll, away from the suction. I would like to know what they were thinking(or if they even thought of it at all) but the brush rolls on the early DAMs actually worked the dirt away from the suction stream.
The spiral was reversed in 1969 with the intro of the power drive machines, which dramatically improved the cleaner's performance.
The fun is to see this backwards brush in action. Take an earlier DAM(1100/1110/1118/1120) and try and sweep up unpopped popcorn kernals with it.
Then use a reverse machine(such as a powerdrive) and see how fast the popcorn disappears.

Wow Fred...great shots of your DAMs. You are right in that the hose on your 1100 is a replacement. The original was colored to match the base of the machine and it was not tufflex but a rather flimsy type of hose with no reinforcement and a smooth texture.

The lady that I work with at the Hoover Historical Center (a retiree with 45 years experience) says that the machine that had the highest rate of request for parts was the 1100. She worked in the parts dept. all of those years so Jo knows!!

It is great to see you back Jeff!! Thanks for adding your insights to the DAM saga.

Another Problem

With the DAMs was that people picked up the machine by the handle and it came loose. It is not unusual to find these machines with loose handles.

Going back to the comment about the Cone Heads, the Power Nozzle and hose that she used in the movies was a white Douglas Power Nozzle hooked up to a replacement white vinyl Electrolux 1205 hose, the machine end was direct connect, the handle end is pigtailed.

Outer Limits "shop Vac"that machine used in the show looks like a Craftsman fiberboard drum machine my Dad used to have. The motor and filter were inside-under the lid.The vac was for dry pickup only-the fiber drum and no water ball shut off valve.Beleive some of Shop Vac early models were like that Outer Limits machine.Loved how it burst open and the energy "monster" came out!!Have the original Outer Limts on DVD.Have tried the newer ones-but they are so hokey to me.Older was better!

Does anyone know what machine was used...

..in one of the sitcoms from the same era that involved a lighthouse keeper who was vacuuming with a "Royal-like" machine and as I could remember, then carried it up stairs? Can't remember the name of the show, but I do recall the woman using the machine as being fairly masculine, or should I say, butch? She was a regular character.

In the movie Rosemary's Baby, near the beginning of the movie they open up a closet in an apartment to reveal a Lady Kenmore upright. I believe it was from the early 60's.
Also in the movie We Were Soldiers, near the beginning of the movie, you can see the familiar red handle grip of a 500 series Kirby, but later in the movie, a scene opens up with a housewife vacuuming with a 1978 Wild Moss Eureka 2315 Upright.
Have a great day!

In the movie, "Mousehunt", Ernie used a modified Electrolux model G to suck up a mouse. I am not sure, but by the look of the outer body it was. The machine was not with the original hose, it was a 70's hose that went with a Special Edition.

There was a cylinder used to vacuum up the little alien in the film Mac & Me. It was a terrible 80s ET rip off with more product placement than you could shake a stick at. Being an American vacuum, I don't recognise it.

There's also a Henry to be seen in One Foot in the Grave:

@ 8min.53sec
Victor Meldrew picks a fight with the home owner using another vacuum cleaner.

And if anyone has seen the new Paddington film, Mrs Bird has a collection of Numatic machines, Henry etc all for different tasks in her store cupboard.

^the other vacuum that Victor is battling with is a spinney made machine, possibly branded Band, Rotel or ETA. They were Argos and Littlewoods-Index budget machines in the late 80's and early 90's.

There was a whole heap of vacuums to be spotted in One Foot In The Grave - the Meldrews alone had a Turbopower U2336, Turbopower U2602, Henry, Dyson DC01 and a Hoover Compact. Mrs. Warboys had an Electrolux z1010.

Coneheads Vacuum Scene

I've watched coneheads over a hundred times when i saw the vacuum scene i kept thinking the vacuum she was using was a central vacuum because the hose reminds me of a central vac hose for an older electrolux central vacuum unit. all I could be right or I could be wrong. All I know is i call it a central vacuum scene

Electrolux and Judy Garland

Years ago I watched a Judy Garland movie for lack of anything better to do on a Saturday. As I recall, a serviceman was temporarily staying with her and her family. There was a scene in which someone, possibly Judy's character, was cleaning with a model LX. I remember noting that the cleaner sounded like an LX, and I was impressed that the sound crew didn't dub in the sound of some random vac. For the life of me I can't remember the name of the movie, and I've had no luck finding it in 'net searches. It had to have been made in 1952 or later, so I can rule out The Clock, as it was made in 1945.

If anyone knows the name of the movie, please share and I will watch it again. I know I'm not dreaming this! Such a scene wouldn't be lost on a vintage vac enthusiast.

Joel

I was just reminded of another one.
With Halloween approaching, they're running the movie Hocus Pocus pretty often.
After the witches' brooms get stolen, they have to improvise their "modes of transportation", and Mary ends up flying on a vacuum.
When she initially wheels it out, it looks like it has a Dial A Nap like a Eureka. But, it may not even be a real vacuum.
The headlight is in a different location. And, there's a flying scene where you can see the underside, and it's just smooth underneath; no brush roll or anything.

Barry

I believe the vacuum is real. The flying scene is a re-created miniaturized version of the Eureka. Flim prop experts. What is this called? To create miniaturized versions of an object for stunts.

Re: Reply 12 - BEWITCHED Dial-A-Matic 1118

Recently watched the BEWITCHED episode "Sam in the Moon" (a clever play of words on "Man in the Moon"), which originally aired on January 5, 1967.

The scene shows Samantha vacuuming while Darrin is watching a Moon probe on TV and listening to the announcer state that astronauts will have the closest view of the moon that man has ever seen with the naked eye and bring nearer the day when man will actually land on the Moon! Sam's D-A-M apparently lacked a suppressor, so it caused electrical interference of the program causing Darrin to request Sam to stop and watch with him.

In a later scene, Sam decides that in order for her to complete all her work and be able to spend more time with Darrin when he returns home she'd bewitch the D-A-M to clean on its own (pre the robot vacuum cleaner era). At his arrival, annoyed Darrin quips "Now that's what I call REALLY automatic!"

Re: Reply 12 BEWITCHED Dial-A-Matic 1118

Recently watched the January 5, 1967, BEWITCHED episode "Sam in the Moon" (a clever word play of "Man in the Moon").

In the opening scene Samantha is vacuuming while Darrin is watching a Moon probe on TV and listening to the announcer state that the astronauts will have the closest view of the Moon ever seen with the naked eye and that it will bring nearer the day when man will actually land on it! Sam's D-A-M apparently lacked a suppressor causing electrical interference with the TV and prompting Darrin to request Sam to stop vacuuming and watch with him.

In a later scene, Sam hesitantly decides to bewitch the D-A-M to allow her to clean the attic prior to Darrin's return, so she could spend more time with him. Upon his arrival, Darrin sees the D-A-M vacuuming on its own and annoyingly quips, "Now that's what I call REALLY automatic!"

So maybe that scene helped contribute to the idea of the development of the robotic vacuum (having first been brought into mass consciousness in the 1956 science fiction novel THE DOOR INTO SUMMER by Robert A. Heinlein)!

The props department of the TV show "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" borrowed my Hoover Lark for the second to the last episode of the series. It actually figured prominently into the storyline. They returned it better than I sent it, looking brand new. They used auto wax on it. This makes the 10th vacuum cleaner from my collection that has been used by props departments. I guess my name is getting around.
