Hey guys... I have a Dyson DC 14 and tonight I used it to vacuum the mattress pad. Well, I forgot to turn off the brushroll when I did it, and now when I turn the Dyson off as the brushroll winds down, I hear a terrible rattling sound. Maybe I messed up the clutch? The brushroll seems tight. I just replaced the clutch about 5 months ago due to a clicking noise it was making, and it has been fine until tonight. Whatever did I do?

This poor Dyson was abused when I bought it used a few years ago, and it has been good to me, but if this isn't a simple fix, I won't have a problem saying good bye to it. I've never liked the clutch system or the skinny brushroll... there are several other Dyson models that I'd prefer like the DC17, or the air muscle, or mini blueprint (forgot the model names of those). I just don't like for ANY of my things to make "funny" noises... whether it be the car, dishwasher, washer, sewing machines, or vacuums I can't stand noises that I know they aren't supposed to make!

What do you think? Do I gotta replace that silly clutch again or is it more serious than that?

If it makes it in the upright position I don't believe it would be the clutch... nor in the vacuuming position with the brush bar off...

The brush bar should be tight and hard to turn when in the vacuuming position but not when it is in the upright... Then it should be loose...

Any chance you could provide us with a video clip of the cleaner making the noise?

I can't imagine that simply vacuuming a mattress pad can have caused damage...you're sure nothing's caught in the brush-housing, or wrapped around the end of the brush bar?

Hey... I'll see if I can post a video tomorrow... I've gotta get ready for quilting class now. It only does it when the brushroll is on... not when it is set to off or in the upright position. I feel like one of my babies is sick!

Jack, the matteress pad had a loose cover over it and the machine was fighting me the while time I tried to vacuum it, but I figured if anything were to hurt it, the brushroll would make that awful racheting sound and stop.... it didn't!

I carefully too my seam ripper to the brushroll and got a few threads off, so it is clear. It HAD to be the mattress pad, because I vacuumed the floor and it was just fine. Then I vacuumed the mattress pad and as soon as I turned it off, the noise started!

Thanks guys :o)
