I have a cyclone xt and for some reason when I put in the replacement light bulbs for the headlight I got a burning smell, the lights work but it smells like the circuit board in it is over heating. I was told to use 12v bulbs and when I was vacuuming they were working perfecly fine. just the smell got strong. could it be that I have not had a bulb in the machine for almost 3 yrs?
a little advise would be great
thanks
Mike

hmm ok I see how it is, I cannot get the help here so I will consult with a vac shop. I was trying to avoid consulting a vac shop because I do my own service work, plus the owner is a jerk. also I know that people here have had experience with this machine but I guess not enough.
I am not trying to be rude but I asked for help and every other time I post something weather it be a new machine or a question it seems as if it gets pushed aside and I get a little offended as everyone else gets their questions answered. Tell me something, did I do anything wrong?

I'm working from memory here from when I had my XT apart. I used automotive 14 vdc bulbs and they are still working fine.

If you think the heat/smell is coming from the circuit board, remove it and check the backside for scorch marks and possible loose solder joints or copper trace-strip breaks. If some simple component on the board appears to be burnt try to get a replacement at Radio Shack. Re-solder everything in any case.
I'm assuming you've checked the output with a voltmeter. If I remember correctly the board has 120 AC input and 12-14 dc output to the bulbs. Which would indeed make the circuit board heat up in normal operation. Notice there is a cooling air path by the very nature of the brushroll motor enclosure.
Unless I'm very wrong and it gets its 12-14 vdc from a fan motor winding...but I doubt it.

Is the smell electrical aka ozone or more like burning pet hair? Always the possibility that the smell is coming from musty dust bunnies created inside the fan motor housing - a common occurrence in motors that have the bulb socket integral with the fan housing. You know what I mean - these are often found packed with rug dust and if so it's likely the main motor vents inside are clogged, too.

But first, be sure the bulbs you're using are an exact size match from the Auto Bulbs section.

I'll check out my XT and other Furys tomorrow - Sunday - and let you know what I find. If the Furys use the same circuit board then a donor junker Fantom shouldn't be too hard to come by.

Dave.

thanks Dave for responding at least I know that I have a friend who is willing to help in this manor,

When putting the Bulbs in the machine there is a smell like the board is burning and one of the resistors becomes really really hot, and for that I have no clue as to why, I was afraid to continue using the machine with the bulbs in it and took the bulbs out. I think I should probably test to see if the board becomes hot during Normal use with out the bulbs, but to my understanding they shouldnt get hot at all.
thanks Dave hope all is well
Mike

Right you are, Joe.

I found both at different times and places here in Southern Ontario.
The central bodies are more or less identical, the major differences being the wand handles and shape of the brushroll base casting.

The USA one on the left with the tinted headlight lens and dust bin I will call Blue and the CDN on the right, Green.

The backside of the bodies differ only in that the green CDN has a green pull-out dust screen. Note the release foot paddle is molded in green, too.

Whoops, I'm getting all confuzzeled again. The GREEN trimmed one on the right with the crescent lens is USA built...the curved wand handle indicates a later build date.

Closeup of the Green USA label.

The older Blue CDN one with the angled wand handle label indicates a build date of 1998.

Both have been totally Spa-ed since these pictures and run beautifully.

Make of these differences what you can. I put it down to a design change during production. All I know is I found 'em in deplorable condition, fixed 'em up and they display nicely beside the XT and my solitary yellow Dyson DC-07.

Oh, I also rescued the purpley-blue Westinghouse Wired version of the Fury.
I rescued them because of what they represent in the early Dyson timeline - I hope to one day find the PNed Fantom canister that sits over and hugs the stair treads. I know Kyle has one but I can't remember the Model name. Kyle?

Dave the model that you were reffering to that has the PN is the Lightning, I have one but it does not work. if you are interested in it I hope that I have it the next time that you come down to NY because I will gladly hand it over. you might be able to find a donor motor easily or fix the one that is in it

Yes, the Fantom Lightning!

Thanks Mike. Do try to hang on to it, please - for parts if nothing else.
I like the looks of this thing 'oozing' up the stairs like some eager puppy. I also recall they are rather on the large side of 'compact' & 'portable'.

Just downloaded the owners manual and found one on Ebay - man, these are not going cheap! Seems they were made in Canada, too, so with any luck I'll trip over one in a few weeks. LOL

Meant to add, when I come across another Cyclone XT I'll snag it for ya.

Hi Dave - here's what the Fantom Lightning evolved into: the Dyson DC02! No powernozzle (although later-production models were available with a turbohead), and a few crucial internal alterations, but overall a very similar machine.

And yes...

...a nice feature of the design was the ability to sit securely on stairs!

you will snag one for me??? thanks Dave, :) I love my cyclone as it is a great deep cleaner and grooms nicely. the funny thing about the Cyclone is that it always seems to find dirt no matter how many times I vacuum. also from what I recall is that the motor to the Cyclone XT and the Lightning are the same motor.
