I'm working from memory here from when I had my XT apart. I used automotive 14 vdc bulbs and they are still working fine. If you think the heat/smell is coming from the circuit board, remove it and check the backside for scorch marks and possible loose solder joints or copper trace-strip breaks. If some simple component on the board appears to be burnt try to get a replacement at Radio Shack. Re-solder everything in any case. I'm assuming you've checked the output with a voltmeter. If I remember correctly the board has 120 AC input and 12-14 dc output to the bulbs. Which would indeed make the circuit board heat up in normal operation. Notice there is a cooling air path by the very nature of the brushroll motor enclosure. Unless I'm very wrong and it gets its 12-14 vdc from a fan motor winding...but I doubt it. Is the smell electrical aka ozone or more like burning pet hair? Always the possibility that the smell is coming from musty dust bunnies created inside the fan motor housing - a common occurrence in motors that have the bulb socket integral with the fan housing. You know what I mean - these are often found packed with rug dust and if so it's likely the main motor vents inside are clogged, too. But first, be sure the bulbs you're using are an exact size match from the Auto Bulbs section. I'll check out my XT and other Furys tomorrow - Sunday - and let you know what I find. If the Furys use the same circuit board then a donor junker Fantom shouldn't be too hard to come by. Dave. |

Right you are, Joe. I found both at different times and places here in Southern Ontario. The central bodies are more or less identical, the major differences being the wand handles and shape of the brushroll base casting. The USA one on the left with the tinted headlight lens and dust bin I will call Blue and the CDN on the right, Green. |

The older Blue CDN one with the angled wand handle label indicates a build date of 1998. Both have been totally Spa-ed since these pictures and run beautifully. Make of these differences what you can. I put it down to a design change during production. All I know is I found 'em in deplorable condition, fixed 'em up and they display nicely beside the XT and my solitary yellow Dyson DC-07. |

Oh, I also rescued the purpley-blue Westinghouse Wired version of the Fury. I rescued them because of what they represent in the early Dyson timeline - I hope to one day find the PNed Fantom canister that sits over and hugs the stair treads. I know Kyle has one but I can't remember the Model name. Kyle? Dave |

Thanks Mike. Do try to hang on to it, please - for parts if nothing else. I like the looks of this thing 'oozing' up the stairs like some eager puppy. I also recall they are rather on the large side of 'compact' & 'portable'. Just downloaded the owners manual and found one on Ebay - man, these are not going cheap! Seems they were made in Canada, too, so with any luck I'll trip over one in a few weeks. LOL Dave CLICK HERE TO GO TO aeoliandave's LINK on eBay |

...a nice feature of the design was the ability to sit securely on stairs! |
