Any idea what happened to the Bosch line of vacuum cleaners in North America? The US website no longer shows their vacs, and it does not even provide a way to buy supplies like bags and belts.

I don't own a Bosch vac, but just curious if anyone knows what happened to their line of vacs. Did the entire line get discontinued in the USA, just like Sharp, Sanyo and Samsung?

Supposedly they have been discontinued in the US and Canada I believe as well.

Bosch was originally selling through a dealer network, as many other brands do. Things changed when they brand began to show up on shopping channels, sears.com and certain big box retailers. My dealer was furious. He flat out told me that I was on my own for finding bags, and I don't blame him. I own the Prestige Premium canister. It's a decent machine, but nothing to write home about. The power nozzles are straight from Wessel-Werk.

It's kind of strange that they disappeared off the market so fast. Consumer Reports gave high marks to one of their power-nozzle canisters (I think it was called the "Electro-Duo" or something like that).

Also the Bosch two-motor bagless uprights (with cordreel) are now for some reason being sold under the Vax brand in the USA - see the link www.vaxusa.com/...

They all looked like nice machines - too bad they are gone....maybe they could not compete with the market over-exposure of Miele.

I bought mine from a Miele dealer. He told me that the price points were similar between the two, but at the time I think a lot of dealers were either looking for an alternate brand or had their businesses too close to another Miele dealers protected territory. My dealer was so angry after having made bought inventory and then not being able to compete with the pricing of Bosch being offered elsewhere. That all seems to be a dead issue now because I see Miele every place in the Houston area. We have an upscale big box store called The Great Indoors (Sears owned) and they have a few models of Miele machines, though I've noticed they don't carry the 'top of the line' canisters or uprights--just the mid range and low end.

Bosch is the same as Siemens. You can still buy bosch over here in europe and they even came with a brand new model, the bosch free it. A cord off 15 meters long they are doing good over here infact.

I knew this and I like them. THe hose conection on the free it is also very retro, and a stolen idea of excelsior cleaners from the early seventies.

I am very dissapointed in the seemingly poor quality of the hoses.

For our friends across the pond they are simply a regualar plastic crushproof hose with a rather poor plastic strip weave pattern applied over the outsides of it.
The weave is certainly not closely woven like on older cleaners and a slight amount of flexing reveals the black plastic underneath.
A sharp snag or two and the weave pattern will almost certainly start to fray or snap.

I dont think the tools are much to go by either as they feel thin cheap and certainly not matched for the 10 year motor guarantee.
I also think the cleaners dont feel as good quality with the plastics used or the styling. For exactly the same money you could buy a Miele cylinder which I feel much better quality.

Hang on a minute! There is still a company that makes a new cleaner with a woven hose?! Even if the quality is lousy, it's still incredible that anyone bothers anymore. I thought Electrolux in the US was the last woven hose maker and they ditched them in the mid 1990s. As nice looking as they were, assuming you had one in good condition (I have a few), they were still stiff and short and are more fun to look at then to use.
