Santa came early for me this year and dropped of this oddity.

Dont really emember them being in the shops and if im honest I dont remember seeing this model anywhere so the curiosity got the better of me and I snapped it up off ebay.

Made in France perhaps in the same place the Hoover Sensotronics were made? Im not to knowledgeable about these French made cleaners but it does seem rather like the Later Sensotronics.

Regular floor tool which I much prefer to use with it. Not over engineered either. Nice simple and does the job

Bag compartment. Nice big bag. The bag comaprtment is very Hoover like. Similar to the Alpina.

Controls, its really very quiet. Even on full power it just gently hums.

The lights illuminate depending on the power setting its on.

Here is a pic from Argos Autumn/Winter 1986 showing the Rowenta RB-21. It would suggest that the difference between the RB-21 and the RB-21A, is the powerhead. Hope this helps.

I agree, I think it looks a lot newer than it is and deffo a strong rival for the Sensotronic. Congratulations on your find :) - hope you enjoy it.

I had a red hard-bag Commander and scrapped it because the cable winder had bust off plus a few other plastic bits like the bottom plate had broken. With hindsight I would have kept it!

I've also had the grey softbag type - sold one of those about ten years ago for £45 in the shop, albeit with a new fan fitted.

I've got a yellow Spinney upright that wants getting going but unfortunately, the original yellow bag rotted on it.

I also had a light blue Moulinex soft-bag upright but sold that ages ago for about £20. I think that there was also a light brown model with a chocolate coloured bag

Im seeing a few rebages here...
Paul, your Rowenta looks like an american Oreck Dutch Tec,(Phillips in Edgar land lol)
The Goblins at the bottom of the catalog page, were Mighty-Mini by Shop-vac but ours had bags, Also the Goblin upright look like a Panasonic decendant to me. =)

Oh wow you're right - it IS a dutch tech. Although I think the Rowenta is considerably older. Another case of Mr. Oreck using someone elses design me thinks.

I really don't think that Goblin and Panasonic US are related tbh. Goblin are a british company, and as far as I am aware, Panasonic always had a fairly good reputation in the states. Goblin were quite well known for being more of a budget brand in the UK and not particularly reliable. The commander upright pictured above (and also available in a hard bag model) was pretty much designed for rivalry with the Hoover Turbopower, as this became Britain's best selling vacuum in the 1980's. They were a little behind the times though. By the time the Commander uprights came out in the late 80's, Vacuums with on-board tools were becoming increasingly more popular and it wasn't long before Goblin replaced the Commander with the Laser (which seemed to be absolutely everywhere when I was a kid, but you don't see many of them anymore)

Hey Chris:

Do you have any other catalogue pages (with the dates) showing the Electrolux or Goblin. I've been working on time lines for the various models. My email is mjdkas@hotmail.com
