the handles and couplers tell the tale unequivocally. I was pondering what to use for the new 1953+ late Lewyt 55 hose that would more closely resemble the original blue/gray woven hose that came with the 1955 Big Wheel 77, when the Twingle went off. I had taken the gray/red hose from a model 44 down to Columbus with me as it has the same style coupler. Fortunately the 55 from Ricky & Terry included both hose ends. Electrolux's hoses are downstairs hanging on a wall rack. The Lewyts are upstairs where I am comparing the 55 & 77 parts. The Hammertone Blue enamel is identical, as are the tool's shapes and colors. Acting on a sudden twingly impulse I stubled headlong down the stairs and brought the two cloth weave Lux hoses upstairs and almost lost my composure, if not me dignity, with the adrenaline rush! I did actually piss my pants...but that's another drinking too much coffee issue altogether. That one of the Electrolux hoses is original while the second has a newer handle grafted on it's shortened length is obvious. But I know for a fact the Lewyt Big Wheel woven hose is also original to this machine. It is clearly illustrated in the Owners Manual and I got the complete intact 77 from the niece of the first owner. While there appears to be a slight color variation this can be accounted for by the fuzziness of the thread weave blending under the camera flash - The Lewyt hose is in by far the best smooth cosmetic condition and retains full suction. The original long Lux hose has been latexed to full suction and the second shorter Lux hose is a spare as yet un-latexed while waiting for an original handle to be worth the trouble. This is a Moment of Revelation that comes but rarely. |

I can't imagine it. LOL The 55 (which may be a Model 66 from 1954/55 - the identity tag is missing) is tooooo perfect not to have a proper cloth hose, eh? If Lewyt could put this hose stock on the all new 1955 77 Big Wheel then they sure as shootin' also used it on the late 1953 style 55/66 which was sold alongside in 1955. The 1956 Big Wheel painted gray and green featured the new vinyl hose in green and the 55/66 tub style was re-stylized and continued for a few more years in gold/copper hammertone as the model 70, so the blue hose would be out of the design formula. |

Under a bright light the Lewyt hose pattern thread clearly has a Lewyt shade of blue beside the Lux's bright blue. The arrowhead pattern is slightly different from the Lux chevron, too but I'll never get this close a match without an original Lewyt hose handed to me. The transplant will proceed...for a good and worthy cause I'm sure most of you would agree and approve. If not, then give me a damn original hose or keep your counsel to yourself...:-) It'll take eyes sharper than mine to spot the substitution when all is said and done. Dave |

The lux ends didn't slip off willingly but since the cloth hose was merely surface glued in place with no retention ring on the newer Lux ends, it gave it up to Papa with a little prying and wheedling and subtle persuasion. I'll latex the hose stock tomorrow and spend tonight cleaning up the Lewyt ends for the renewed airtight hose. I guestimate it will be only 6" shorter than the original hose - works for me. Thank the Gawds for Universal coffee and rainy days! Bet Rick and Terry never expected this development with an old vacuum flogged on EBay. I am a persistent li'l feller with a few bins of spare parts and wanna do right by this fine vintage vacuum. |

No no no, I luvs youse guys who do like I do. This is all being done to honor the fallen NC57 and this superb re=born souvenir I am thrilled to be caretaker of. Did I mention I won a complete boxed set of pristine tools, manual and paperwork from Montreal for this model just before I left for Columbus? Was on the kitchen table when I returned. Manual shows a cloth weave hose and I'd bet my unborn it is gray with blue arrowheads. The Sales receipt from Vacuum Rebuilders Of Montreal Inc. - Office and Factory, 5778 St Lawrence Blvd - shows a Cash Sale on Dec 19 1953 to one M.B.Lusher, 8420 Waverly Street, Montreal of One New Lewyt for $97.50 + $4.88 tax for a total of $102.38. Interestingly, the manual Cover highlights how the unique 'Circular Track' tub base permits the dolly-less Lewyt to easily swivel in all directions from the center of your floor as you vacuum about the room with your 8 foot hose. "You can clean from corner-to-corner without once moving your Lewyt!" Musta been a Christmas present for the Mrs. Now I have what she got, with the 'at slight extra cost' dolly. I was born a mere 9.5 months earlier... Wee Davy ------------------------------------------------------------- But I do occasionally - and still - get nasty jealousy-tinged emails from anonymous losers...and you know who you are. The spanking is directed at you. 'Nuff said. They are much more direct and harsh with malfeasance-ers over on Automaticwasher.org... |

Thanks Doug. I knew eventually you'd chime in. Over the past few days I've been leaning toward 66. Now it's confirmed. I guess if they were sitting side by side in the Store one's personality and appreciation for progress, or not, would decide your choice. :-) Me, I woulda chosen the Big Wheel. So New! So Different! So Compact! Same Tools! Same bag! Different Hope Coupler? oh well !!! More from the 77 Manual: "Defrost your Refrigerator" "Blow up Party Balloons" "Keep Christmas Tree Fresh with Sprayer" "Make Records Play Like New" with dusting brush "Dry Your Hair" "Groom Your Dog" "Clean Your Car" "Sleek Your Fur Coat" "Pump Your Organ" Yes, really, 'course they mean reed organ... "Start Stalled Cars" Warm air on carburetors and gas lines "Fast Freeze Fish" Spray with water to build up ice layers in freezer for long storage "Curry Your Horse" Spray down with curry powder after riding hard...no, no, Upholstery tool sleeks the horse's coat. The 66 can do none of these things. At least, the Manual doesn't mention them. :-) It really is a treat to have both of these models complete to compare side by side. Well, other than a hose hanger Wall Rack - I guess I better have two LOL - or a metal Ride Along Tool Rack for the 77. All in their own good time, I'm sure... Dave |
