aka aeoliandave has arrived in Columbus Ohio for the weekend and mini meet at Norm Brown's on Saturday. Blew in to town at 2 pm after taking the backroad 2 lane blacktop route south from Toledo. Headed directly to Norm`s, who is now busy making up the crockpot chili while I have checked in to the Motel Super 8 a few short blocks from Norm. Perfectly decent budget priced $40.46 room with two beds, a microwave & fridge, free strong wireless and bonus of bonuses...a steam iron and ironing board! So Davy can iron his shirts every morning! Yippee! |

Like many Super8s that have not yet had the SuperDuper8 upgrade and received their new re-designed logo, this Super8 has seen better times and is a bit lax on maintenance. The lamps over the bed are so wobbly they were fallen upside down when I entered and the HVAC unit under the window has not had its filters cleaned in a few months - one of the first things I check in any motel room. The felted dust layer is as thick as a prefilter. Good thing I travel with a vacuum...or two...or three...or four. LOL Going on 5 pm now and I`m heading back over to Norm`s place. We are going out to dinner with some friends of his. The Australian boys have been heard from - in fact they have been in the general area a few days now. So things are lining up nicely for a fine meet & greet tomorrow. But there`s still all of tonight to get up to Lord Knows What in the Big City of Columbus. :-) One thing for sure, I`ll have my own Monomeet here in the motelroom cleaning the filters and giving the carpet the once over before bedtime. Not that the carpet needs it but just for fun, ya know...Whee! Dave |

Sorry, started without you. On my way to Pete`s on Friday there`s a left turn in the tiny burglet of Ailsa Craig that takes you down to the 402 straight one hour shot to Sarnia and the Bluewater Bridge to Port Huron. I felt the wagon`s hatch wasn`t sealing right because of a wind whoosh noise and went throughh the intersection to pull over. Yup, the hatch wasn`t fully engaged. So, when I turned and .looked around lo and behold, a Thrift store I didn`t know about. So in I went and this is what I found... $2 for the GE hand mixer, $2.50 for the Westinghouse Stand Mixer (the large bowl was worth more than that, they seem so scarce) and this $2 unmarked Jetsons-looking kettle. Does anyone recognize it - I want to say it`s of European manufacture. Interesting compound curve oval teardrop enameled pot and decorative handle. High quality almost Bakelitesque plastic handles. This can`t have been cheap to produce with all those curves. |

Side profiles. The Westinghouse, which I call The Whale, speed control is loosed from it`s connection to the governor so the mixer runs at full speed, but smoothly with no grinding noises. I have a good stand-less beater-less bowl-less one of these with an intact decal that will provide the donor parts. The decals on these are notorious for rubbing off - never go near them with a Magic Eraser - the white paint also comes off too easily under heavy scrubbing. The body of the kettle shows no seams where a top & bottom section might be welded together. Clearly the spout was added but I would think it would be well-nigh impossible to form this complex egg shape with a small top opening in one piece of steel... Well, I`d really like to know who made it. |

Mmm, John. The area along the northern shore of Lake Erie, particularly around Leamington is famous for it`s Tomatoes and Heinz factory. Area also used to be famous for Tobacco. When I return through Ailsa Craig on Monday I`ll stop and see what I can dig up for you about the Ailsa Craig variety. Dave CLICK HERE TO GO TO aeoliandave's LINK |

At least now I can confirm that this variety originated from Ontario. I just never realized the tomato was named after a town, instead of a person. |

As arranged I headed back over to Norm's for 9 AM Saturday. Steve and Craig, the Australian-sourced 'Streakers' had already arrived, hands were shook and background stories shared, then all at our ease we headed out over to Bethel Road Sweepers to see what was to be seen and, you know, admire touch and fondle shiny vacuum things. Norm will correct me where I got it wrong, Bethel Road Sweepers is a vacuum shop in Columbus that opened just before Norm closed his shop. This is the insanely unmissable green Bethel Road Sweepers van with a Eureka bolted to the cab roof. |

Steve on the left is the born in Oz one; Ohio born & raised Brian has lived in Australia for 14 (?) years and is quite proficient at the accent. :-) |

This being the Top of The Line it has what has to be a very expensive reflective metalflake automotive paint that changes color as you walk around. Deep red becomes a becoming green. You gotta see iot to appreciate it. Actually it kinda reminded me of my Grade 8 graduation suit I picked out myself decades ago. Remember those suits, anyone? Anyway, the Simplicity looks way much better than my suit did. A number of cars at last years Detroit North American International Auto Show had dual color shifting paint jobs like this. Subtle and utterly transfixingly gorgeous. I don't know what the paint chemistry is but I'm gonna find out, you betcha. |

Time to head back to Norm's for the noon start of the Mini Meet. Ed had graciously agreed to be the shipping destination for the Lewyt 55 I won from the NC57 Collection, a select few of which Crevicetool Rick and Terry put up on Ebay. The box was a bit larger than we asssumed and before I could insist otherwise, Steve bundled himself and it into the back seat with Brian and off we went. To be continued...Almost 1 AM, Davy yawning. Sunday morning I am heading over to Springfield Ohio an hour west to tour an up until today unknown to me Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie house built in 1908-09 for the Wescott Family. The gents were discussing the Springfield House when I arrived and I assumed they meant the Dana House in Springfield Illinois. The more I eavesdropped the more I understood I was wrong. Thanks Norm! However long that and the Museum Shop takes me - I do tend to dawdle around Wright's magnificence - will decide if I make a direct run to Sarnia or stay over another night in the Toledo area. Oh wait, I must go shopping at J C Penny before leaving the USA. I suspect I will find it advantageous to stay another night at a Motel Super8. I do have all of Toledo's and Detroit's Thrift Stores programmed into the Garmin... Dave |

The four of us scurried back to Norms to await the noon arrival of the teaming hoards no doubt converging on Columbus... Beautiful warming up sunny not-a-cloud-in-the-sky day it turned out to be. First order of business - unboxing the Lewyt outdoors on the stoop so not to scatter static charged styromfoam packing all over Norm's home. |

memory dimmed by the excitement but I was sure there were more tools...has Crevictool forgotten to pack them in? All I'm coming up with are shards of nothing... Oh well. Norm, meantime lays claim to the cardboard box...says he has a large Christmas present to wrap for his grandaughter...we know Norm just wants to play in the cardboard box and make a fort after we leave. |

The adrenaline rush also dulls the common sense, too. Of course the missing tools are packed inside the vacuum. :-) I knew this Lewyt 55 looked good in the Ebay pics but I didn't expect it in this superb condition. Not a speck of rust and nary a disfiguring scratch or dent anywhere. Lewyt's modified Dustalator filter that raised Healthmore's litigious ire when it was a pointed cloth cone. Crevicetool Rules...feel the luv, buddy. |

Plugged it in, fired it up and it gave an impressive reading of 83" on the Vac-U-Tronic tester. We all agreed the motor sounded perfect. So, while chatting and twiddling our thumbs waiting for more knocks on the door from the impending thundering herd clamoring to join in the fun, weoohed and ahhed over Norm's upstairs display. Which is what I'll let Norm tell the stories behind them. But we did have to get fingerprints all over them all... |

Yes indeed Terry, Rick sure does know how to pack those nooks, crannies & crevices snug and safe. Not for nothing is he the one and only Legendary Crevicetool. :-) I'll be expostulating all over and about the Lewyt when time permits but I will say how very thrilled I am to be it's caretaker and how grateful, and puzzled, I am to you two that this one didn't disappear into one of your southern friends' - fine gentlemen all - hoards. I naturally assumed that the Dolly would be a stamped steel contrivance like GEs. You should have been there when I began exclaiming to my captive audience that it is a one piece aluminum casting!!!! without a chip or crack and the tools all match and fit!!! and so on... Dave, off for a Wright fix. I have decided to overnight in Toledo so I can hit all the Thrift Stores on my way back on Monday. And write some more of my Vacuum Adventure blather in a timely fashion. |

oopsie again. I may have the Streakers misconfusaltaed in my feeble brain. They will set us straight, if that's possible. :-) This seems apropos: Meet (insert name), who's lived most everywhere, From Circleville to Zanzibar, Japan to Brisbane Square. But (insert name) only seen the sights A guy can see from Australia's Heights -- What a crazy pair! But they're partners, Identical all the way. Safely ensconced in Perryville/Maumee Ohio, after crawling up 75 the past half hour. Sudden torrential rainstorm in the dark threw a real wrench into driving folks. I counted no less than 17 separate accidents between Findley and Maumee, each sepasrated by a mile or so all the way up, most have a truck involved and two-four rearended cars or vans. The hiway is blinkin' blue and red with emergency vehicles. I was one of the lucky ones, stuck to my right lane and trundled into the motel at 7 pm. Now I must walk over to Perkins for some dinner and in the meantime I found another cartoon of a fort building nature I just have to share. I'll re-start the posting when I get back. As Wright-fully exciting as today has been I will report things in chronological order while the memories are fresh. Dave |

Oh yeah, Part Two...The Basement... While we were in the back room there was a knock on the door and in came...rat's, I can't remember his name, it seems I didn't write it down on my notepad but he is an old buddy ...er, I mean a dear acquaintance of long standing of Norm's who lives close by, has an extraordinarily resonant bass voice and is not a collecter of vacuums...and yet he knows so much about them and identified every one we threw at him...for things did get rather rambunctious at one point. No, that's a lie, we were perfect gentlemen all afternoon. :-) Ok, so I forget his name but the story is on a roll uphill and I can't stop now or I'd have to start all over again. So, we 5 headed for the basement. Norm lives in a brick fourplex, two up and two down and the buildings have full basements accessed from the wide central staircase. Each tenant, I gather, gets a 1/4 portion and Norm's is set up like a long room with walls. Again I will let the pictures speak for themselves, particularly since we still don't know for sure which one is Brian or Steve or the Mystery Guy. arghhhhhh. Just inside the door on your right... |

I hung out a little longer and Norm googled the Frank Lloyd Wright house over in Springfield for me and discovered it is open year round, 7 days a week. This is one I did not know about and so my Sunday was decided. Back at my motel I played a bit with the Lewyt. Duh. The only thing that didn't come with it was the hose but thankfully the hose ends were. From a fragment it would appear the hose was replaced at one time with with a gray vinyl weave hose from a Eureka. I had brought along the graybuff/red stripe diamond pattern Lewyt hose from my 40. |

Backside showing the tool posts, which are of course labeled in raised lettering as was Lewyt's practice. Remeber, this is the company that felt the need to actually cast 'Vacuum Cleaner' on it's Big Wheels lest it be confused with a beard box on wheels or one of those pop-up lid refuse baskets, or a Pet Caddy for walks around the neighborhood without the walking part... Here you can see the thumbscrew that presses a felt disk into a round dimple on the back of the vacuum and pushes it against two rubber buttons at the front. Secure yet easily removable from the Dolly. Another interesting thing to me is that the Crevicetool is transparent blue plastic. My gray 40 has a mothballizorlator two piece device in the same clear blue. I would have thought the crevicetool would be lavender plastic like the 1955 Big Wheel 77 has. Just last week I won a box of Lewyt 55 tools and Owner's manual and original sales receipt dated 1953 on Ebay from a feller in Montreal and it has the upholstery nozzle and crevicetool in lavender. Whateverrrr, it's all pretty. |

As previously exclaimed, the Dolly is one cast piece of hammertoned aluminum! As well, all the gray rubber trim on tools, motor housing and dolly bumper are perfect in every way. Extraordinary condition for a vacuum as old as I am - 56 years. I just have to smooth and buff out a few shallow dents in the chrome disk ring around the handle plate. Often the motor vents are warped from heat, as they are made of plastic, but these are again...perfect. The cord is slightly dried out and cracking in a few places and the strain relief collar is split but dang, the cord is supple and has its original plug and red cord clasp. |

Breakfast Turkey Spinach 3 Egg Omelet at Bob Evans. Dang, this was gooooood! Crossed the road for two extra large Tim Hortons triple cream coffees and hit 71 south for 70 east to Springfield. Discovered something on the road. I found I could not get my eyes uncrossed as I drove and was doing it with one eye closed. I hadn't had a cold coffee to microwave as I made the morning preparations, just some fruit juice and a bannana. As soon as I had a slurp of coffee both eyes snapped back to normal. Speaks for itself, I guess. |

One more. I think this is the City Hall or some Government building. As striking as the light strings are they put me in mind of Death Rays keeping the citizenry in obedient thrall... I took this picture on my way north out of Springfield at dusk after spending 4 hours at the Westcott house. I was the only one there other than the reception gal and the lovely older retired gent who was my docent guide on a truly individual no holds barred tour. The man actually lived in the house for 23 years when he was in his 20s to 30s, when the house was split into 4 apartments. The house was restored with ~5 million donated dollars and has been open only 3 years. |

A few teaser panoramic shots of the Wescott House, before I hit the Thrifting road back to Stratford with a stop in Sarnia. The house was commissioned in 1906 and Burton Westcott, his pregnant wife Orpha and their daughter Jeanne moved in in 1908. This rear view is to the South toward High St as your come up beside the large rear pasture/yard toward the Garage/Stable. On the left hand side is the Springfield Cemetery grounds and so views from the house take in this vista to the east in perpetuity. |

A panoramic shot taken from the Cemetery hill from the Stable/Garage to the front lawn. The house and plot are raised considerably above sidewalk level and you begin to appreciate the mass of the structure and it's privacy. The side wall along the Pergola is about 15 feet above the sidewalk but from inside the back yard garden lawn one can look out over the wall through the timber screens; the yard grade is raised.

Side view panorama facing the Main Entrance through the gates from the sidewalk. This is the only way to enter the main house from the street. As is the Wright way, one enters a compressed space and climbs a short wide staircase where the ceiling opens above you in a light filled Reception Hall. The effect is most uplifting...

Wright did not approve of eavestrough piping runs and so each eave has simply an opening and the water drops into a grated recptical below in the lawn and the water is carried away in underground channels. This is my Tour Guide, Jack, who as I said, lived in one of the 7 apartments as a young lad and stayed 17 years. I'm going to guess that he is in his spry mid 70s. |

Naturally one is not allowed to take photos inside the house but, well, um.... Sideboard in the Dining Room. Only open to the public for 3 years now they have yet to produce a glossy coffee table book or even a pamphlet with pictures. But I did buy the 2 disk Centenary DVD which will provide all I need. It documents the Family, the decline of the property and the massive effort to restore the home, which took 6 years and $6 million in private donations. The house is owned and operated by Springfield, not the FLW Conservancy in Oak Park. The 45 minute Tour cost a paltry $12. My Private Tour lasted well over 2 hours and then I wandered the grounds and Gift Shop housed in the garage. :-) |

What's their idea of not taking pictures indoors? Does it cut into their brochure/tourist folder pictures? It's always great to see a private home that's been cretinized into apartments turn back into private again. Except it would be fun to see the McMansions of the past 20 years to now turned into efficiencies. I mean the "homes" that people buldozed great old houses to create their vision of grand living.

Bookcase in the Reception Hall. Other than these two built-ins every piece of furniture is long gone since so much was removed and altered to create 7 separate appartments in all the orpon spaces. The Fireplace Inglenook benches, diningroom table and chairs and the Library table were reproduced from Wright's plans. The Art Glass was all in situ, was removed and cleaned and put back. Decades of paint & wallpaper on wood floors & trim, painted light fixtures ceilings and walls had to be stripped off piece by piece. Open balconys and porches had been walled in to create mini kitchens for the apartments. The pergola timber screens had been removed as well but the Urns survived.

Home Sweet Home at 8:30 PM. As threatened, I did the rounds of Thrift Shops throughout Toledo and...um...found a few vintage vacuums. By 1PM I was in Ann Arbor and dropped in to see Chad. Lovely catch up visit and chat about this 'n that. Chad had only just finished reading this thread when I walked through the door. Hey there, Rick and terry. The Universe listens!!! As i was leaving Chad gifted me a not working well UNIVERSAL electric Coffee Percolator! So Now Stratford Davy's morning coffee ritual is no longer Universally Challenged. Chad says the pot merely gets warm and will not boil. The perc is in excellent condition but for one bastard bolt in the bottom - someone tried to 'fix' it and probably messed up the bi-metal thermocouple setting. I'll get it in tickityboo order in no time. I decided to forgo J C Penney as I now have the employee discount number for next weekend - worth a daytrip to Buffalo. :-) So I set the Garmin for Marine City, was on the ferry by 4:30 and in Pete's driveway at 5. There I stuffed last Thrustday's mixers in the formerlly empty - now piled high with a layer of 4 vacuums - back seat and Pete tossed on another layer of a turquoise Compact, the Turquoise Air-Way 77, hose, wands and Attach-a-carrier. I had no inkling I was gonna be bribnging back 6 old vacuums on this trip. But that's the way the Twingle works! I will unpack the car on Tuesday so I can inaugurate the new garage door with it's first Vacuum Glamor Shot. Bersides, it's late, dark and cold and The Katz need me, even tho they pretend to not notice I was gone. LOL Sly beasts... So, here's what's in the back seat, from the right. |

I just checked Streakers's's's's's'sess' profile and I deduce that Steve Brazil, of Brisbane Queensland Australia, is the recipient of the Kirby Turbo Nozzle and his Ohio born mate is Brian. Unless they contradict me, I am correct and I win...a one on one tour of the Wesscott House in Springfield, 6 cheap old vacuums found at Thrift Stores, A Universal Coffee Percolator and a place to stay in Brisbane if I get to Australia fast enough. If I am wrong I am not giving anything back, as I have licked them all. LOL |

Talk about the most wicked thread I think I've ever read on this site... Firstly - I must make this short - it's midnight in Circleville - I'm cold and tired - and really need to get some sleep - so I'll make it short... A huge thankyou to Norm - what a true gentleman and such a generous fellow to open his home to us 'international randoms' to view his awesome collection. Also to Dave - thankyou for taking pics - I left the camera in the car and really couldn't tear myself away to go and get it! So your pics are the only ones in existence! Gary - if you read this - cheeky fellow - you certainly were able to bring out my 'dark side' in humour - and had me cackling like an old hen! LOL Bill in Wisconsin - THANKYOU!!!! I'd have kissed you if you were there!!! What an awesome surprise!!! I promise I'll take good care of the new toy!! Thankyou so much! Sam - I'll be posting your package at some stage before we leave... The day was brilliant, it was truly wonderful - even husband 'Craig' (sorry haven't had a chance to read thread yet!) enjoyed himself immensely (he of course looking at the 'architecteure' of the machine builds....). So - yes - Dave - you got Craig's name right in the end... When I get a chance I'll put in some more thoughts and comments!! Norm - have you tried the 'Vegemite' yet? Anyhow - eyes are closing all by themselves... Take care! |

Would have been great to see Norm, Gary, and Dave again and meet Craig and Steve. Sounds like everyone had a great time which doesn't surprise me as I know how much fun minimeets are and have also enjoyed Norm's hospitality and know what a great cook and gracious host he is. a few more spy shots inside the Wesscott home. original outdoor Art Glass light fixture. Almost all 26 of these had gone missing but 2 were still in place on the front terrace and were reproduced. Wright's basic & simple pure Cube theme for the Wesscotts is evident throughout the house in Art Glass, hardware fittings and floor plans. There are no circle shapes anywhere; even the inglenook and other fireplaces are square & rectangle blocks similar to the Diningroom Sideboard. Other Prairie Era homes are more elaborate, designed around a chosen natural plant leaf theme and often perfect hemispherical arches are featured. |

The formal street entrance through the gates. Peering through the full length plain glass door - which is nearly 4 feet wide - all you will see is a flight of stair treads ascending, warmly lit from above. The low lintel beam blocks the upward view of the hallway. One must enter to catch a glimpse of the glory that awaits... Another note - On this house all the outside accent trims and patterns created by the framing & screens are worked in solid timber stained brown, over stucco walls. This house is said to be Wright's cleanest Japanese Shoji Screen exercise, with no excess adornment to spoil the effect |

Bare bulb light fixtures throughout the non-public areas of the house - kitchen, bedrooms, etc. There never were any shades. This is a standard wall fixture I've seen in almost all Wright Prairie homes. The Livingroom, diningroom, hallways and formal spaces of course all have wall sconces and overhead indirectly bulb lit Art Glass shades similar to the outside Cubes. Another note. Wright specified all fixtures, door and drawer hardware to be cast in three metals. All Bronze for the public spaces, Nickle-plated Brass for the Family spaces and Steel for the utility and Servant spaces. The Wesscotts had a cook and Maid with their own bedrooms over the kitchen wing, and a Chauffeur/Man of all Trades living over the Garage. Mrs Orpha Westcott however insisted on driving her own car at all times and she had an Electric vehicle. Her Husband had his own Steam Car Company. :-) |

A child's bedroom. Quite small by today's standards. The cook and maids rooms are so small you couldn't fit two single beds in there. just enough room to turn around but they all do have a clothes closet with built in drawers. :-) On the other hand, Mr and Mrs bedrooms stretch across the entire front of the house with balcony/sleeping porches at either end reached by passing through the Dressing Rooms.

The westernmost bedroom suite pan shot. The eastern bedroom is the mirror image with it's own hearth. These were lit with gas, not firewood. Passing through the Dressingroom on the left and Bathrrom on the right leads to the open balcony porch, large enough for a couple of comfortable chairs or a bed for fresh air repose. This particular room was Jack's Apartment. The balcony's were walled in to create Kitchen spaces with room for a small eating table. The main room was the livingroom and there is a connecting door to the east bedroom. Heating throughout the house is Hot Water radiators hidden within walls under windows, in this case under the corner window niche. It is not steam heat. |

Today's garage door glamourpuss shot. Most found in Ohio, Toledo area. I was really just looking for a blue-tone hose I could use for the Lewyt 55 but no luck. later today I will pull out the woven hose discard bin and see what's in there. Air-Way Mark V w PN, no tools - thrift Hamilton Beach No 26, hose & wands but no tools - thrift Compact Electra C-6EPB as is - with PN socket by the switch- from Pete Universal Percolator - from Chad All Original Lux G hose that still passes the thump test - thrift Hoover Model 27 w original bag and lamp lens. Runs great! - thrift Douglas Handvac with all the parts in box - thrift Air-Way Mark II complete w tools and a PN socket- from Pete I have wanted a 4 caster HB for ever so long and they do come up on Ebay but so expensive. Tools, Schmools, This one cost me $5 and the hose thumps still thumps. :-) The Hoover 27 was a slackjaw, skid-to-a-halt find buried in a dusty basement corner at St Vincent De Paul. It was in the throw it out pile. Another $5. Air-Way Mark V - same deal but on the sales floor with no tools. $10. G vacuum has sold previously and they didn't take the hose...so I did, for $1. The Compact and Air-Way Mark II are so turquoise ya wanna lick 'em all over. Spa first, tho... It snowed lightly last night for the first time - Happy Dec 1 everyone! Rats, I didn't center things but the ground is wet and my broken little finger REALLY doesn't like the cold air...now, finally, it hurts like a SOB! Buying mittens today! Thus endeth vacation get-a-way No 1. In 12 days I leave for Syracuse NY and this time I will circle down afterwards through Pennsylvania towards North Canton, returning by way of Buffalo NY. A week or two later, I wander the midwest on the way to Winnipeg Manitoba and back. Dave |

A few initial observations before the Spa opens. Down under the Compact's paper liner between the cloth bag I found this Sales Tag Medallion. The other side says "Sold Exclusively by Demonstration in the Home". Have already found a nice clean air-tight cloth Compact hose for it. The Compact pulls 68". The turquoise Mark II lid is on backwards and the foot switch has been bypassed - easy fixes. I have the matching hose for this on a 77. Pulls 78". At first I thought the yellow Mark V had an internal cordwinder fitted but rather, the entire undamaged cord length had been stuffed and coiled inside the motor chamber. Pulls 76". I've not inspected a Hamilton Beach cylinder before. The front swivel casters have little flip-over levers that lock the castors in a forward position like the fixed rear wheels. Dispite the impressively large outside diameter of the cloth hose the intake inside the coupler to the dustbag is only 1+1/8" dia. The end cap is sorta in two halves. Unlike other cloth dust bags that sit on the rim, the HB is assembled inside face out and pushed down inside the bag chamber where the thick shaped rubber gasket fits the rim only one way. Then, a paper bag liner is inserted and the edge folded over the rim about 1/2". Then the end cap goes on over the lipped rubber gasket and clamps in place. This one had a paper bag liner with insertion instructions printed on it and does not appear to be altered from something else. Pulls 52", so far. Does anyone have information or a Users Manual for the Hamilton Beach they could post or send me? Dave |

As suspected, someone messed with the setting screw. The screw on the right with the coil spring was run out almost to the end as seen - the roller on the bi-metal strip is not even closing the boil coil contacts. No wonder all it does is warm water...slowly. The screw should be in at least 1/3, judging from old marks. I set it there and perked some cold water on 'weak'. It tripped too early at one minute. adjusted it several times until it ran for 2.5 minutes. The light comes on when the boil cycle is finished and the 'keep warm' coil takes over until unplugged. It will make tomorrow's morning coffee at a midway setting and we'll see what we get. Universal built very robust Coffee Percolators, I must say. I understand they made a not half bad vacuum cleaner, too... |

Then I set about fixing up the Mark II. This shoulda been fast & easy. Turn the bag lid around so the carry handle lines up with the lower cord wrap and reconnect the foot switch. It's never as simple as it seems, it seems. The switch was connected but shorted, so the machine was always on. Salvaged a pushbutton from a pooched Power Nozzle - done. To get at that switch required most of the Air-Way to be separated into sections. Someone must have used it as a stepstool at some point. The front caster mount was bent and twisted into the aluminum skin and fouling up. In fact that entire side of the carcass was badly deformed from some weight being put upon it. So naturally I had to straighten out the metal case. To do that the rest of the machine had to be dismantled. |

remove the caster, hammer the twisted mounting plate back into shape, then hammer and reshape the aluminum skin's concavity back level. Aluminum sheets are easily hammered but also easy to dent the wrong way so I hammered it on the oak tabletop covered with newspaper and a tea towel. Mangled caster inner support stamped steel plate is at extreme right. The middle channel clears the thin aluminum skin's 'french seam' and rests against the inner double cylinder bag chamber. to support the caster without deforming the skin. How to re-shape the skin's corner curve to match the others? Use a large wood dowel as a mandrel and ball peen the living crap out of it until it pleases the eye and mates with the hard aluminum rim support castings... |

Now, just put it all back together orienting and mating the 3 main main sections and caps correctly and wrap cord. Then take too many pictures showing both horizontal and vertical attachment of Attach-a-Carrier. The tool carrier can also be hooked to the side of the bag lid rim without affecting suction.

Vertical Attach-a-Carrier on carry handle. There is a hand cut-out so you can still pick up the vacuum and carry it upstairs with the hose and wands slung around your neck... Du to all that necesary dissaembly this job took 5.5 hours, with Magic Erasing when appropriate... ...and that's it. On to the next client so the new old vacuums can be moved all purty-fied one by one up to the Attic Lounge ready for action. |

house 4. The back porch railing on the far left is the exact same pattern I intend to duplicate when I rebuild my side porch, with luck, in 2010, fingers crossed. My posts will be more Arts & Crafts square section with corner chamfers. This is the first one I've seen in my travels in perfect original condition. I stopped and photographed it from all angles. |

The Listowel Giant Tiger aka Big Pussy discount store (Giant Tiger is a Canadian Chain across Ontario that caters and stocks to the precise needs of the region in which they are located) has a fantastic hand painted mural along its street wall. It really looks like a billboard photograph but when you get up close you see it is not printed 'wallpaper'. |

When I got home I decided the give the Mark V the once over spa. All it needed was a good scrubbing with Magic Eraser and a polish on the aluminum castings and the pn socket had been pushed in. In this shot the left side has been cleaned. The differences I noticed between the Mark II and V are the cheapening of manufacturing assembly choices. The Mark II pn socket snaps flush into place securely. The Mark V rubber socket is riveted visually right through the body skin and protrudes a good 3/4". It had simply been pushed off the rivet posts inside because there were no washers to hold it on. The yellow paintjob is rather sloppy and pitted but I do like the re-introduction of the four decorative 'Sputnik' side rails. I wonder if they brought these back because the aluminum skin is so prone to denting when pulled around in horizontal mode? |

The Power Nozzle was more of a chore. I've not seen this PN style before, with it's plastic bottom pan and different top shape. I'm assuming it is the original pale yellow Air-Way pn? Reminds me of the Electrolux type PN with only wheels in the back - the PN floats over the carpet - and the central intake. |

All done. The PN wands have chrome clips holding yellow plastic channels to hold the cord in place. Nice touch. The PN does NOT have a swivel action where the button latch wand connects. Since all the other Air-Ways are arranged on top of the Luxious towers downstairs I'm going to have to shift some vacuums around to fit these two new Air-Ways in the room. The Kenmore Challenger on Cart will have to find a new location, as are all the Electrolux PNs - maybe a wall rack with hooks? |

Dave, the first picture of the red brick house is owned by a little lady name Mary. She is close to 90 and still drives and looks after the whole house. The hardwood floors go right up to the attic. She is the second owner of the house since it was built. The Beetle Juice looking house I believe belonged to the mayor of Listowel. At one time there was a ballroom on the second floor. I think its the square looking bit with the door coming out to the roof. The house has been carved into apartments. There is a funky second hand store close to Giant Tiger. I have found some great deals in there. Its usually piled high on the curb in front of the store. |

Hi Norm and Dave, How exciting to finally see the exact Eureka upright with whom I grew up! Now I finally have the exact model number also - 260. Norm's version has the exact same graphic on the bag that we had in Montreal in the early 1960's. The graphic does not spell out the name "EUREKA" in a vertical line as on many versions I have seen. The one Norm has shows the cool curvey "E" in a box, with the word "Automatic" running downwards in the same box. If I had the room and the cash, I would pay a pretty price to have that beautiful Eureka back in my hands! Interesting story: The handle-holder on our 260 starting wearing out by the late 1960's, and so the handle would not stay in the locked upright storage position. We gave the vac into our largest vac repair shop in Montreal at the time - Vacuum Rebuilders on St. Lawrence Avenue. When our blue Eureka came back, it sported an avocado green handle holder!!!! I was appalled! It must have been difficult finding a replacement part at the time - these Eureka uprights had handles which were square in profile (not round). That great Eureka kept our wall-to-wall turquoise carpeting spotless up until 1974, when it got replaced by that wonderful golden Rugulator upright Model 2083, with the Cordaway and box-top gold brocade bag. Thanks for the memories guys! Brian |
