This is for Jack:
I went to Target today to check out the new vacuums. I saw this new DC23 and just had to bring it home. They only had one on display and one in sealed box.
The suction is almost shocking and the Dyson Turbin nozzle does not slow a bit even in my heavy carpets.

Dyson DC23

Jack:
The box claims that the turbine nozzle turns at 90 revolutions per second. That's 5400 revolutions per minute. Does that sound correct?
Isn't that close to what they claim for the electric power nozzle?

Hi, Rob,

thanks for posting the pictures of your new acquisition! I don't yet have any of the latest series of Dyson canisters - when I buy new cleaners, I tend to go for upright models! - but I've heard many good things about the DC23. The click-fit tools and the new 'T2' wands are a godsend compared to the older design, and you have the added benefit of the Level 3 Root Cyclone design, which offers the highest level of separation efficiency of any cyclonic separation system.

What's interesting is that the US Dyson site gives your DC23's power output as 220 airwatts, whereas the closest UK equivalent of your model, the DC23 Animal, is rated at 280 airwatts. I guess that's due to the UK's higher voltage.

You're right, the brush-bars of the DC24 and DC25 uprights, powered by their own motors, go at 5400rpm, or complete 90 revolutions every second. I'm glad to hear that the turbinehead is more competent on carpet that it was when attached to the DC11.

I hope you enjoy your new purchase - in particular, the large, soft dusting brush is a wonderful tool. It actually lives up to the shopping-channel hype!

If you haven't done so already, make sure you go to Dyson.com and register the cleaner as soon as possible, to cover yourself with the 5 year warranty.

As it happens, I got a new Dyson of my own yesterday. It's one I've wanted for a while - the limited edition DC16, celebrating James Dyson's collaboration with fashion designer Issey Miyake. Miyake's 'The Wind' catwalk collection found its inspiration in Dyson's vacuum cleaner designs, and Dyson also designed the set for the show.

Side by side with its replacement, you can see how much more compact the new DC31 is, thanks to the new DDM V2 digital motor.

Fuschia cyclone manifold; this colour is really growing on me! I think it's the same colour that's used on the US DC22 Motorhead...

This one's not going to be used; having been unboxed for the sake of photographs, it's now been placed carefully back into its packaging and put away. I have the lighter and more powerful DC31 for use.

I just so happened to get the same thing in Motorhead :P

I have already used it while baking :P

Dyson DC23

Jack,
Thanks for your pictures too. I just noticed that this machine seems to have more cyclones that the first canister I tried from Dyson. Is this correct? It also seems to have a lot more air flow.

Hi again, Rob!

I'm guessing the Dyson canister you had before would have been the DC21 Motorhead? If so, yes, you're right; the older Dyson canisters had fewer Root Cyclones than the latest models.

The latest cyclonic system from Dyson - 'Root Cyclone + Core Separator' - actually has 3 stages of separation. The link below shows you how it all works!

Well, with all this talk of canisters and Core Separators, I thought it was about time I added one to my collection...

Target ! Vacuums

Rob
I really like your new Dyson. It looks awesome. Funny you should mention buying it at Target. As I was just there this
eve, here in the Polaris (north) shopping area. I noticed
that the Dyson were all lined up nice and descending order
price wise. I did not see the new can at this Target ! What
I did see surprised the heck out of me. Right after the Dysons (again, in price descending order) were 2 new Orecks!
299 and 199. Then all of the Bissels, then one lonely Hoover
upright bagless. Vacuums have gone high end in Target. Leading the line up off with Dyson, Oreck,Bissel, then Hoover !
Guess we knew it was coming !!

This is my DC23 Motorhead. I was hoping Dyson would update the wands from the DC21, but they didn't. The vacuum is amazing. The DC21 was great, too. I gave it away when I got the DC23.

Dyson DC23

Jack,
I just called Dyson this morning and ordered a part to use with my dusting brush. She told me per my serial number I had one of the first in USA. I am still AMAZED at how well the Turbine Nozzle works No slow down even on my thickest carpeting and so easy to use even with hose handle.Did you notice the color difference on the tops of our machines.
Patrick,
I had a Dyson DC23 Too.I did not like that Dyson. The brush was way too stiff and damaged several rugs. This machine seems to have a lot more suction and the wand on my DC23 is much much lighter. You cannot turn this machine over. I have tried. I like it almost as much as my Electrolux Oxygen3.
It is one of the most powerful machines I have ever used. The design of Dyson machines is so interesting. Every tool is unique and has it's own Dyson design. Did yiou notice the fabric tool and how it is designed with a higher front to allow constant airflow.

I have a DC22 DDM Motorhead...and I really wish they would come out with a T2 wand configuration for the DC22 as they did with the DC23. Being able to connect tools directly to the hose would make cleaning tight spaces, like in my car, so much easier....but my DC31 with the added flex hose is just as good for cars. I wonder if Dyson is working on a T2 wand for their motorhead canisters as well?

DC23T2 Motorhead?

Hmmm, Frys.com has a DC23 T2 Motorhead in fuschia (like the DC22/DC16) for $399. I hope it isn't a misprint on their behalf.

And $399 seems VERY low for a Motorhead model...

Dyson DC23

Jack,
I have owned my Dyson DC23 for over a week and this is what I have found that I like and dislike:
positive first
(1) I love the larger diameter hose-nothing clogs
Once it goes in the nozzle-its' gone...
(2) love the new wand design-much lighter and easy to handle
(3) like the longer power cord
(4) love the Turbine Nozzle-even rubber backed rug does not
slow it down-just a better design
(5) love the brush roll design-no more ruined rugs like from
my DC07 or the DC21 Canister
Neatives last
(1) still a little on the heavy side to lift
(2) when you pick up machine the handle is attached to the bin so there is some "flex" . I had the same problem when I would try and pick up the DC07 to move from one floor to the next.
Summary:
It is one terrific sweeper and the suction-air flow are terrific and it is very easy to empty. No dusty smell or bags to buy.
Rob

The "Flex" you talk about is the spring in the handle assembly pulling up to stop the release mechanism being activated :)

Post# 83288 , Reply# 21   10/31/2009 at 06:49 (5,288 days old) by vintagehoover ()

Hi Rob,

As Shanon says, the 'looseness' of the bin handle is wholely intentional. As the handle pulls upwards, it locks the bin release catch, so there's no chance of you accidentally disengaging it when you're carrying the cleaner around. The upright models from the DC14 ownwards have this feature as well.

If you watch the video I've linked below, someone's gone to the trouble about making a video showing this "design fault" for YouTube! They're entirely wrong, and it has no negative effect on the function of emptying the bin using the trigger, removing the bin from the cleaner, or carrying the cleaner around.

I agree about the weight - but there's a certain trade-off which has to be made between lightness and durability. One of the engineers' greatest challenges is to make components strong enough to withstand the gruelling durability tests, without compromising their structural integrity.

And I'd say that if you can only find 2 negatives, one of which isn't actually a negative at all, Dyson have done pretty well here, right? :)

Dyson DC23

Jack,
I agree with you. Overall I think the machine is very well designed. I do understand the "flex" but I don't like the feel it gives you when you pick up the machine to carry it up or down stairs. I REALLY hated this about my DC07 and in fact numerous times acidentally released the bin from the machine. As a vac collector I am very very careful now and when I do carry the DC07 up the stairs I hold on to the nozzle end and the top. Don't want any accidents.
I would say on a scale of 1-10 I would give the DC23 a strong 8 or 9. I really like the machine. The DC07 on the other hand is a different story for me. I hate trying to use the attachments with the machine either falling over or the hose compressing. I also do not like the brush roll. It seems to collect string and dog hair. For my carpets and rug the brush is way to agressive. It ruined one rug and fuzzed several other smaller rugs. Dyson's fix was to trun off the brush but then you loss the ability to pick up doag hair. Also do not like the difficulty of going from one rug surface to another without a middle stop on the handle. I was constantly having to put the handle in the upright postion and then lifting the sweeper from one surface to another. Mine seems to have a LOT of suction with the tools but not so good when I use it as an upright. You could see this when you take the vac off the edge of the rug. They may have made changes on the later uprights as I have never tried one.
One of the best things for me on the canister is the "trigger" suction relief. I can just pull the trigger to reduce the suction and go from one rug to another without lifting the nozzle.
Jack, I love these talks about the different cleaners. Always learn something new. It is so nice that a company is doing some research and not just cranking out one plastic piece of junk after another. I DO think this Dyson DC23 is an example of a vac you have to try to get it. I am still getting finer and finer dirt in the bin and NO DUSTY SMELL.

Rob!

You're positively no good!

I want one of these Dysons! **gasp** Did I just say that out loud?

I played with the floor model at Best Buy yesterday... Looks like a fun machine! It's definitely on my list!

Thanks for sharing your new toy!

Dyson DC23

Fred,
Don't blame me. It's that darn Jack! I read his posts and he creates a new interest in a machine. This is good vac and so much fun to use. It's not as beautiful as the Stainless Hoover Connie but it has so many interesting design features. For me an upright is an upright is an upright BUT if a canister vac is not design properly it really suffers in use.
For example the old Hoover Portables and Kenmore canisters were just like pulling a big heavy suitcase around the house I try and be obfjective when I get a new vac and compare it to my other machines. You will like this machine.Much better than the DC21 I had with the bulky hose and wands and brush roll that damaged my rugs.
Tania is coming for a vac trip next week. Wish yiou could join us.

Dyson DC23

Here is what the Dyson pulled from my family room carpet. For some reason hair, threads and litter do not cling or wind themselves around the roller brush. Very different from my DC07.

Hi Rob,

How is your DC23 still working for you? I'm very interested in this model, and I love the metallic electric blue! A trip to Sears or Frys is definitely needed. I initially wanted a DC17 but I heard that it ruined somebody's carpet with the stiff brush roll! I'm very anxious to try this model out, might have to be bad and buy one after Christmas when all of the stores are having their sales. :)

Dyson DC23

Alex,
I have had my DC23 for almost 2 months now. I am still very happy with the machine. I would buy another Dyson canister with the motorized nozzle IF they change the brushroll from the origial and replace the bulky wands with the newer style that came with my DC23.
I did have 2 rugs ruined by my Dyson DC07 and an early DC21. It also "fuzzed" several smaller rugs. This machine has a different design for the brush. Those stiff plastic brushes on some new cleaners SHOULD get the dirt! These might be less damaging on a wool carpet.
I love the floor brush and the soft dusting brush on this machine. There is truely NO LOSS of SUCTION and you cannot turn the machine over in use no matter how hard I try.
Now Jack has creatd an interest in the new Dyson upright, although I am not an upright person because I have many different rug and floor surfaces to clean and I do not like trying to use the tools with the Dyson upright.
This machine is very compact and NO DUST oder or leaking dust.
It is a very very user friendly machine.
Gad I got the machine. Thank you again Jack!

I finally tried the DC23 Turbinehead today....

and it's AMAZING. I've been told they pull 100+ inches of water, and it has massive airflow, it pulls a strong "woosh" of air into the hose, and you don't have to deal with a stretch hose and all of that power! Another thing I like is since it has a regular hose, none of the attachments have those awkward suction relief vents on them. I also really like the "trigger" suction relief and the color is great. I couldn't tip the machine over either. The Turbine-head is even more amazing, as mentioned above it spins as fast as a power nozzle, and it didn't even slow down when I stood on it! It is a little bulky but I can live with that. They're $329.99 right now at Frys and and $439.99 regular price at Sears and on sale for $373.99. This is *the* Dyson for me.

Also Rob, did you have to purchase the bare floor tool, stiff bristle brush, and soft dusting brush separate? On Dyson.com there is an offer for a free bare floor tool, but I emailed them and asked if I had to buy it through the website or if I could go to a retailer to buy it, they told me the offer is only good through the website.
