Well, it stopped raining long enough to get a few shots of the vacuums arranged for their last group photo together. After today, most of these machines will be starting a new journey to their (hopefully) new permanent places among established collections.

Number one.

Apparently,you've already....

...culled out my Lux model XX from the herd and no-doubt sent it on its way westward. Many thanks for that, Rick. I owe you BIG TIME!

Rick, I'm confused. Are these machines for sale? Is this the collection that was for sale on ebay? This is part of Hans (Hi Hans!)Craig's collection? I see some things I have in my collection. Sorry, I'm catching up on life outside of school now that thats done.

It is always surprising perhaps which vacuums appeal across the broad span of members here. As a deeply devoted vintage form & function design and engineering guy, it's the Hamilton-Beach on 4 casters, The Fairfax-ish Whatever Brand It Is (McAllister? Conlan-Moore CONVAC?) kitty-corner to it...and what the heck is that one between them with the transparent amber top? A corn popper? A vacuum display with a demonstration dome to show the cyclonic swirl?

But above all the one that garners most of my covetous yearning is the Lewyt 66(?) on the dolly. Because the superb turquoise Westinghouse will surely take pride of place in Snellville or Ruskin...

Crap, there I go go picking out the best ones in my temporary delusion. LOL
Ok, the Kenmore Commander is darn nice, too, and the two Westinghouse Torpedoes and the Eureka Roto-matic and the range of Electroluxs and the Apexs, Air-ways, Royal, Filter Queens and Hoovers, oh my goodness the mind buckles under sheer wonderment. :-)

I want to send out my admiration and gratitude to Terry and Rick for saving this assortment of goodies and a huge round of applause to Rick for setting them all out so alluringly in his driveway that we may all dream & drool over such an instant collection. Hardly surprising but good to know that a few will be retained, a few will no doubt be gifted to new homes and the rest sold off will more than pay for the lot. Congratulations in advance, you two intrepid scalliwags.

Nice touch, the Made In America flag wafting proudly over the hoard...er, herd of classic Dust Buffalo.

Now, about matching up those hoses and tools...:-)

Dave

Thanks to all who have E-Mailed Terry and myself.....

and who have showed an interest here on the forum. IT WAS OUR INTENTION TO SAVE THESE MACHINES. We did not know what may have happened to them. We struggled with this for many hours until placing a bid. We had thought about waiting for it to end, and making an offer. We were not sure if the auction were to end with no bids if they would settle for an offer, and to dispose of the items in an inexpensive but devastating fashion for those of us interested in the vacuum hobby. I do know for a fact after talking to the seller that they would NOT be sold individually and they really needed the space in the warehouse for other business use.

Once having won the auction, the problems of selling the machines and parts (there are A LOT of parts) became apparent to us. For one, the recent thread about posting EBay auctions on this forum was a big concern. Another concern was whether it would be right to sell the items right here on the forum, considering the large amount of materials and machines. Still a third concern was shipping. The costs. What if there was damage? How would we handle a bidding war for items... via E-mail? And lastly, but most importantly - friendship. The selling of items without a centralized system could cause HUGE hurt feelings. What if the item were thought not to be described as it was when it arrived? What if it were damaged in shipment? We would rather NOT sell anything than risk a friendship over some vacuum cleaner.

With all the above considerations in mind. Terry and I have decided to sell the items on EBay. When I have cleaned, checked-out, and assembled the machines and parts, we will make an announcement that they will be offered for auction on EBay. We won't be posting individual auctions. We may have to make the announcement in "waves" as items are prepared. They all won't be ready at once obviously. I would like to be finished starting the auctions by the end of September. I will use the forum to make the announcement(s) because I feel the posting of an EBay auction on the forum does inform vacuum collectors that something is out there that we may have otherwise missed.

Finally, Terry and I did purchase the items, and we hope there are no hard feelings when we say that we will be keeping some things, some items will be gifts, and some will be sold prior to any auctions taking place. So, if some of the items don't show up on EBay, you'll understand why. We have not answered any requests that were made via E-Mail, instead we have chosen to make this one blanket announcement. I hope all understand why we are doing things this way.

Again, Thank you for your interest. If something looks like it might appeal to you and it's available for auction, the best of luck to you.

Terry and Rick

Dave, thanks for NOT pointing out that I need to paint my house. The flags that have flown continuously since 09-11-01, tend to clean a circular pattern on the front of the garage, that the rest of the siding does not benefit from. I replace the flag every anniversary. They get taken to be burned in a ceremony at the VFW.

As always Rick, you have done an outstanding job of explaining how we plan on selling the vacuums from this collection and the reasons why. Most importantly we did not want to hurt anyones feelings. We had already had multiple request for certain machines and we felt that listing them on EBay would be the fairest way to handle this. Terry

Rick,

My only concern is, where is your wife making you sleep...her home has been invaded by vacuums....hopefully there is a comfortable spot in the garage for you...if not, I do have room here in Iowa...LOL

Oh, and I do have a harpischord stop on the organ! And the piano for that matter!

Mini-van....

Well Morgan, since the seats were already out of the mini-van, a nice air mattress provides Rick with plenty of comfort inside the van while his family sleeps warm and snuggly inside the house!

Rick and Terry! What an undertaking! You have a great plan there. Sounds fair and honest to me! I know how you must have felt about saving those vacuums from sure destruction. I find old vacuums all the time and even though I may have them already, I buy them anyway in case a fellow collector might want it. I consider it a rescue.

Good luck with this enormous project!!!

Marty

That's not the worst of it! Why, I don't know....but we seem to be trying to adopt a stray kitten. Named, (for now) Kitty. We've been setting food out for it just inside the garage door. I think my snoring scares it and it runs away after eating. I'll be glad when I can move back into the house!

It's really been lots of fun reading the chronicles of this great adventure.

I hope any comments I may have made now or in the past has not fueled any misgivings about posting eBay auctions in Vacuumland. If that is the case I am indeed sorry.

I did say that I no longer feel the way I used to about it, and said that I don't see any reason why people can't post links to their own listings. I did also say that I didn't see any reason why people would post links to other people's auctions, but that was not to say I presumed to decree that they should not do so. I just didn't -- and still don't -- understand why they would do so.

I wish you well with your endeavor and hope everyone finds something they can enjoy having. For myself, I have stopped acquiring any further vacuum cleaners and indeed am going to dispose of the bulk of my collection, as you plan to do, via eBay, keeping only the machines that really mean the most to me. I have had to dismantle and dispose of my workshop and storage space.

Since I no longer have a place to work on machines and to store them, what's the point in hanging on to such an extensive collection? It's just become a burden, and, as such, the joy of having them has dissipated.

Wow...

I'm really impressed, and laud you for what you guys are doing. You surely have your work cut out for you, what with selling the vacs on eBay, the packing, the shipping...and no doubt, the fretting about the whole undertaking. I only hope that you've got folks who will be able to help you with this enormous task.

Thank you for what you are doing.

Joe

Rick and Terry,

If you're interested in selling the aqua/black flat rectangular (Westinghouse), I'd love to have it along with the pink Jet 99 or similar two tone green one. Also if you have an attachment set for a Hoover 61 with a cloth and ultraflex hose. :)

aeoliandave's profile picture
That red one is a Saniway, more or less just like the one Fred Stachnik found in the Minneapolis area on Saturday morning and posted about, um, this morning. :-)

As this thread discloses above, the methods of dispersal have been decided. If anyone has not been contacted privately by the Honorably Scrupulous Rick or Terry, based on who first indicated interest back when I posted about this collection on August 18th and according to private sale/gifting availability after Terry and Rick make their own cull of course, the remaining vacuums matched to whatever hoses and accessories Rick can manage will be available to all on Ebay and we will be advised right here when the first ones go on Ebay.

I, for one, look forward to the Ebay listings where I will have a level field chance to bid on any items that really demand my interest and potential win.

Dave
