I thought of all of you Hoover fans over the Christmas Break while I was watching one of the dvds I got as a gift this year. Anyone remember the old show "Mama's Family" with Vicki Lawrence playing the brassy ol' mama? I got the first season on dvd for christmas and within the second and third episodes on disc one, two hoovers are made VERY visable. The first was a Hoover Constellation, now forgive me as I am a Kirby buff and do not know much about Hoovers, but it was orange in color, and Mama's grand daughter Sonja, was asking her where she wanted the extra vacuum stored. Thats about all I can tell you on that particular scene. In the third episode, scene 1, Mama is cleaning house and getting things ready for her son Vinton's wedding. In this scene, she is using a Hoover convertible, and again, I apologize for not knowing Hoovers like I should, but this one was kind of a dark or army green in color. The bag said Hoover down the side. What was interesting about this scene was that unlike other tv "vac" moments where the machines aren't even running and the sound is just dubbed in, you could actually see the bag inflate as she turns it on and off and you can faintly hear the motor humming along. As she turns it off, she complains about how nothing is going right that day including her vacuuming due to her bag being full and not having amymore on hand. Well, Vinton's fiance, Naomi, tells Mama that she has a whole box full out in the garage so she will go get her one, while she is doing so, clumsy Vinton decides he is going to help his Mama pull the old bag off to get the cleaner ready for the fresh one that Naomi is fetching. In doing so, Vinton rips the bottom fill bag off of the cleaner, and as you can guess, dust goes all over him, Mama and the house! Finally Naomi shows up with the fresh bag and Mama hurridly throws the bag on, shoves it into the outter bag and proceeds to finish her job WITHOUT closing up the outer bag, so for the remainder of that scene, you see a light green paper bag pokin' out the backside of the cleaner. It was a very amusing scene, which of course leads Mama into even more ranting and raving about how nothing is going right and eventually telling Vinton and Naomi, in regards to the wedding, to "call it off, call it off, call it off!"

I loved "Mama's Family" and I remember the episode with Vint's wedding. I do not remember the vac but I remember that Naomi said that if she knew Mama had a Hoover that they could have traded bags for years. I am guessing that the Constellation was all orange. If that is the case, then it is a model 444 from the mid 1960's. If it had a brown hose and a light brown bottom half, then it was a 1970's model.

The green Convertible...did it have a headlight? If it did, then it was a 1958 Convertible. If it did not, then it could have been a lot of models. Hoover seemed to like that color a lot.

I did not realize it was on dvd. I will have to see if I can find it. I liked the early episodes before they added Bubba and Iola. The ones with Carol Burnett were much funnier.

I hope that this answers your questions.

The Constellation was orange with a light brown bottom, and I remember that the convertible did NOT have a headlight, of course with it being a stage prop, it could have been pieced together as well!

good stuff

Hey there... Mammas Family is one of my fave shows... Along with I Love Lucy and Andy Griffith... people who know me say it's just because of the vacuum shots :O) I remember very well both episodes as I just got the first season on Netflix... does anyone also remember the episode where Mama took Naomi's Kenmore/Singer upright (the kind with the switch in handle position), and burned a hole in the rug... the vacuum went to court... quite a funny episode! I just saw the Christmas episode where Iola made a Christmas vacuum cleaner cozy (a toy soldier if I remember right) for Mammas brown Convertible. Great stuff!

I agree

Amen brother! What Lux model was Rose using to inflate those pants of hers for that product testing job? I didn't get a close look... only vacuum ever on Golden Girls... My Netflix que cycles Lucy, Golden Girls, Andy Griffith... I got the first season of Mammas Family, but there aren't any more... I do catch them on TV sometimes though... I used to wake up at 6 am just to watch Mamma... now she comes on at 7pm!

I remember that episode! It must have been either a Silverado or a Diamond Jubilee, I remember it was gray in color. Does anyone here remember the show "Gimme a Break" with Nell Carter? She used an Electrolux to suck the water out of a fish tank. Oh, the humanity!

Actually ...........

Nell used a Eureka vacuum to suck the water out of the fish tank. Also, I think that Rose was using a newer model Electrolux. Maybe it was a plastic model that came out after the Diamond J. I also remember seeing an OLD Oreck in a "garage scene." It was the episode where Rose was raising Minks. It was over next to the wall. I saw just glimpse of it, but I don't ever remember seeing any other vacuum on the show.

Does anyone remember if Hazel used a Hoover? I can't recall any episode of her vacuuming.
Tim

Indeed, there was a Hazel show with a vacuum. In fact, it was the theme of the show. Hazel wanted the latest and greatest vacuum cleaner. She got George to buy it for her and it looked like a Electrolux 1205 but I don't think it was. I think it was fabricated for the show. Anyway she finally got it and referred to it as a "doozey." Well, it broke down right away and the show was about how she didn't let on to George that it stopped working right away. That one has stayed with me all these years. I could relate, 'cuz I would have wanted the fanciest vacuum of the time as well.

Yes, I remember Hazel, too. She was a maid, portrayed by Shirley Booth. But that show was on and off the air long before the 1205 came out. Late 50's or early 60's if I remember right. And yes, she called EVERYTHING she was impressed with or excited about a "DOOZEY!" Or, a "real doozey!"
Best wishes to one & all for a "REAL DOOZEY" of a New Year!

Cory...the green Hoover Convertible was definitely a model 584 and was built from 1964 to 1968. It looked like Viki Lawrence had trouble closing the bag. She was ACTUALLY using it. I caught this episode on some country station tonight by accident. I thought it was so funny when Vint blew the dust in her face. I had forgotten all about how funny that show was. Her Hoover was only about 15 or so years old at that time. It did have its cord protector replaced though. Otherwise it looked pretty good.

Come to think of it-another one-bring back the Hoover Jr.metal please-again like the Convertible with the metal brush roll and metal beater bars.also the tool kit to go with them!It could be upgraded to use Filtrete HEPA type bags-same with the Convertible-provide Filtrte bags for it.I think a lot of folks who would want a compact upright-the Hoover Jr. may be the answer. Also please go back to selling Hoovers thru DEALERS-not box stores.
