I'll admit I am just a sucker for a UK Ranger style hood Hoover! There is something about these machines I love. I have other Convertible vacs in my collection that mean allot to me, but these are my favorites. Would anyone show pictures of the ones they have? I am including a picture of some of mine so that you get the idea of what I am speaking of!

They had these in the US didnt they? They look like the US convertibles. Are the Rangers different in a way?

Neat vacuum. I think I am a sucker for these and the 1010- 1020 style convertibles.

Yes these are US units

However I think the hood style originated from the UK hence the Pea colored one on the left with is a UK import. I think that machine has something to do with a strike that happened over here

Oh ok. That makes sence. I thought I had seen those! haha. Thanks

RANGER

Hi Dennis,

I absolutely love the supremacy. This has to be the most attractive variation on the Ranger theme I have seen, and it is such a shame this never made it to the UK.

The UK import you have seems to have a U4014 with the Sand coloured U4002 hood. The Hood should be the same colour as the netal on the handle and bail.

It may just be the light playing tricks. I might acutally have a spare U4014 hood I could ship to you if this is the case!

I wonder how much it would be (cheapest possible reliable option) to get a supremacy shipped to the UK, if I could ever find one that is!!!!!

I have a U4072 which was a CO-OPERATIVE department store exclusive edition and the last UK machine to use the Ranger style hood. This had the powerplus chassis however which is closest to the USA Decade 80.

Nice collection of ranger style machines.

Happy hoovering,

Clark.

Hoover Senior Ranger

This was seen to be the cleaner used in the UK "Shake 'n' Vac" carpet freshening powder advert.

Most Beautiful Wards!!!

I bid on that Wards, but had not had the money to outbid you LOL. I do like it though and I am glad that a collector got it! I bought the Supremacy off of Ebay a while back. I love it, it is indeed one of my favorites :)

the only problem with mine is that it says 2-speed and it only has a one speed switch?
ahh well it runs awsome anywho. I too love the ranger hood convertibles. i saw one at the salvation army a few days ago but it was trashed.

Hey Kirbfan

Check your email!

Dennis

PS: Check to see if there is a switch that changes the speed when you put the handle up...... It is attached to the motor to speed it up when you attach the tools!

Post# 73458 , Reply# 15   6/27/2009 at 22:58 (5,413 days old) by kirbfan94 ()

IT DOES CHANGE WHEN YOU PUT THE HANDLE UP!
Ive never know that. I allways turn on/off vacuums with the handle down.

I dont particulary like the ranger style hoods, but I do have a Wards one lik epictured above, I bought it at last year's convention.
I do love the Supremacy, I always tend to favor anything that is burgandy.

Also, Dennis where in the Pittsburgh area are you located? I am in the Washington, Pa area. Maybe we can meet sometime for a Hoover show and tell.

Sam

I love the Blue HP and the Supermacy, something about that burgandy with the black handle makes it very attractive. The ble one was a Sears exclusive most likely, and the Supermacy IIRC was (aroud here) exclusive to Ann&Hope or Apex, and the grey I remeber seeing at True Value near my house. I think a PA minni meet is in order, with pics to fallow!! =)
Happy Hoovering everyone

real Perivale" one. I used to be friends with a guy who wanted a blue one. I got him one for his birthday in June. A while later, I asked him where it was. He had SOLD it.
I'll admit, I MUST have a few in my collection, but, it is my LEAST favorite design.

What a fab photo of the four of them. Thank you for posting this - I always liked different versions of the Hoover Ranger and saw quite a few different ones when I was growing up - the Montgomery Ward one seemed to be a popular one in our town.

I used to recall to collectors in the UK about the Ranger Senior with the curved handle instead of the more modern version but very few knew what I was talking about - my town in Scotland being home to a U.S Naval Base - and we had tons of American appliances including the big Cadillacs, Pontiacs and even those bizarre AMC Gremlin cars floating about.

Always used to think the Ranger's with the badges on the left hand side were American, just like the cars' Left hand drive. I soon discovered at 14 years old that Hoover was an American company and not just built in Scotland, UK....

My parents had this exact one when I was a kid! I love this vacuum I was heartbroken when I found out they threw it out. I'd love to find one like this or similar to it.

It isn't just vacuums though Anthony, I find that our cars from the 60s and 70s were very boring compared to the Cadillacs et al that were made in America during those decades.

I don't know what is going on with the UK ranger in that photograph, but it appears to have the middle handle bolt facing forwards, which relates to the much older design of handle and cable holder. The "correct", or should I say more popular design for the ranger can be seen in the very first photograph. The newer cable holder required the middle bolt to be inserted from the side.

I never noticed that Benny. Very interesting indeed. What year was your UK Ranger made John? Perhaps it was an early model whereby they used a different handle before switching to the side facing bolt.
