You do understand, you'd be getting quite a raw deal?! 'The One' was a disaster in every conceivable way - and that's coming from a Hoover fan!

The UK doesn't have self-propel like here in the USA, or do they too?

We have Kirby...I think that's it as far as self-propelled cleaners go!

Hey, Shanon!

'Care to explain how "The One" was a failure Jack? I havent heard anything about it.'

This cleaner was really a disaster for Hoover - a poor effort in every way! British consumer magazine 'Which?' ripped it to shreds when they discovered it only removed 36% of the dirt from carpets - compared to the Dyson DC14's 84%.

The main problem with performance was the awful brush-roll, with bristles as soft as a baby's hair-brush. The idea was that they wouldn't scatter debris on a hard floor (aided by a stationary set of bristles which were lowered at the press of the button on the cleaner head), but in reality, it just made the cleaner hopeless on carpet. And if a vacuum cleaner - especially an upright - can't clean a carpet, what the heck is it there for?!

The cyclonic system was equally abysmal. It relied on a foam filter and a pleated filter to hold back all the dirt, since the cyclone only spun out the fluff. All the fine dust went through, clogged the filter, and lots of it passed straight on to the motor. This would cause the cleaner to overheat and cut out all the time.

Added to these two crucial design flaws, there was a whole host of quality and construction issues - Hoover eventually stopped repairing them under guarantee, and just gave furious customers their money back! They soon realised the machines they repaired were just failing over and over again, and the only way to stop the cleaner from haunting them was to offer a refund and let the cleaner die.

Reps from other companies heard whispers and rumours about 'The One', this "amazing new cleaner" Hoover was developing, long before it was launched. Everyone was waiting to see the 'Dyson Killer' Hoover had spent so much money developing. But when it was launched, everyone thought it was some sort of joke - that Hoover had created a 'decoy' to throw people off the scent, before unveiling the REAL machine. But when the One hit the stores, the industry realised this was no joke, and the general feeling was 'THIS is IT?! This is the best they can do!?'

To sum up, The One basically represented the final blow in destroying everything the 'Old' Hoover Company that we all know and love stood for. Just embarrassing. Look at some online review sites for it and see the sort of comments people have made - some are quite painful: 'Until now, we've only ever had Hoover cleaners - but never again.'

HOWEVER. All this makes me think it's worth keeping hold of one for the future. It's a sad but true fact that most of the Ones sold have already died and been thrown away, just 4 years after they were launched. My 'One' has only ever been used once, for the video below!

I have an original The One like you Jack and mine has only been used twice. I found its performance far better than I was expecting. It removed some Sebo duo P powder from my carpets that several other cleaners had left.

I had The One Pet but the brushroll motor stopped working after a couple of weeks and I decided to send it back after the Hoover engineer said he would have to order a new part. I own the two motor Performer model which picks up very well and also a couple of the cheaper Performers without the separate brush roll motor.

The last decent bagless Hoover upright was the Vortex in my opinon. I'm not counting the Airvolution range, as they are certainly a step in the right direction.

Love em or hate em, Dyson cleaners are certainly the best when it comes to bagless cleaners. I agree that The One is certainly a future collectible, if it's never used and kept pristine.

Roger
