One of my favourite things is finding a great cleaner sitting on the street, by a dustbin or sticking out of a skip (that's British for dumpster!). So I'd thought I'd share two of my best finds. What has everyone else found?

On the left is a circa 1958 Junior 1334, which has an alloy hood rather than the later plastic one which came in around 1964. I was driving home one night from a takeaway, and for some reason decided to take a back street, which I never normally do. And I found this machine dumped outside a garage. The only missing component was the handle release pedal rubber, but everything else was there, including the bag, which is made from some kind of rayon, and gets snagged and torn easily! It has always run well too.

The DAM type cleaner (actually a Convertible 1124A over here) was sat in a street not far from my work. One of my workmates and I had gone to a cafe for lunch when I saw it on the way there. I grabbed it straight away, and it sat by our table while we had our food, much to my workmate's (and the waitress') amusement! One of the back wheels had collapsed, and had literally worn flat, so I had to carry it three quarters of a mile back to my work - exausting! It still had a 1970s grey paper bag in it (which had been reused many times judging by the look of it), and the motor was full of dust bunnies, which would probably explain why it got so hot when I ran it! but it has been sorted out now, and I am very pleased that I found it.

Si

Wow!

One of my best vacuums, my Air-Way 88 Mark II, came from a garbage dump. It was weird, because it had its original "Steel" tag on it. No attacments except for the hose. I refurbished the outside, and now it looks much better. It is probably my best vacuum! Only wish it had a power nozzle!

I found a Royal upright in a trash pile-the bag, roller brush, and belt were missing-replaced these parts and it ran nicely-I sold it to someone who needed a vacuum-wasn't collecting at that time-and about the same time I found the Royal-I was riding home from work on the bus-saw a Kirby Classic sitting by a trash can for garbage pickup-along with its attachments-by the time I got to it-someone else must of had the same idea--was gone-but the trash can(unemptied) was still there waiting for its garbage pickup.Otherwise I haven't seen many vacs in the trash-except for one Hoover Futura canister-cleaned and replaced its filter-then was OK-figured it was thrown out because it wouldn't pickup.traded it in toward another vacuum.Lately I haven't found any vacuums in the trash.Keep my eyes open though.

Vacuum By The Dumpster

I remember I was working at an Auto Parts store at the time, in Amarillo, TX, I lived in Amarillo at the time. I was driving home from work, and was only about 3 blocks away from home and I happened to see an Electrolux vacuum sitting by the dumpster in an alley. I turned the car around, drove up the alley and snatched up the vacuum cleaner! It was an Electrolux Silverado. It had the power nozzle, and hose, which looked like someone ran over the hose as part of it was smashed flat! Needless to say, I took the vacuum home. The latch on the lid was a little bent to where the lid wouldn't close so I straightened it, and the body of the vacuum was a little dented so I straightened those, then took the motor out of the vacuum and cleaned it, cleaned the power nozzle and put a different hose on it, and the vacuum works like a charm! That vacuum cleaner still is in service today, working like a charm!

hello guys, I've got a long story of vacuum cleaners found in the trash...I'm one of those who suddently stops when I see anything looking like a vacuum cleaner handle comung out of a mount of trash and check to see what it is.
My hoover power drive dial a matic in orange and white and one of my 1968 hoover convertibles(SENIOR) U 652 A, were toghether in a pickup full of trash which wos being brough away from a museum... I stopped the pickup, picked my wallet and gave 20 euro tu the driver to allow me to take the machines.
they had both been fully serviced two months before (there were adhesives advertising the hoover service dating the time of refurbish...) and they had then been thrown into the trash.
Now they're standing in my cllection.
Another one is the hard ba hoover junior( junior starlight), it was on the road woith the trash.i picked it up , brought home, plugged in and it worked like new...people are not very clever sometimes.
We collector have the mission to give a good home to the poor old vacuum cleaner that people no longer appreciate.
OH MY GOD HOW NOISY THE HOOVER POWER DRIVE DIAL-A MATIC IS....
i'VE NEVER HEARD ANYTHING LIKE THAT.
GREETINGS TO EVERYBODY! T

My best trash finds included an Electrolux AF in perfect working condition and an Electrolux L, needing some help, but nonetheless working.

For a while I was dumpster-diving behind some established Electrolux dealerships for parts, power nozzles, etc. Occasionally I would find an entire unit. Amazing how many people were duped into throwing away vacuums in perfectly good working order for the promise of snazzier features or slightly increased performance.
