During most of the year, I live and work in China, so I don't get to do any collecting/scrounging/etc. I do come home in the summers, and of course, the first thing, after greeting family, is to bust out the vacuums and fire them up. I do occasionally indulge in Ebay finds during the year, but again, I never get to see them until the summer.

Anyway, I came back home yesterday, and this time it might be relatively permanent (but that's another story). Just look what was waiting for me:

My First US Lux

I found this as a buy-it-now on Ebay. Only the canister, and the price was a little beyond what I wanted, but what the hell...I've been looking for a G for ages, and this one looked particularly good in the seller's picture.

I'm really impressed with this machine. The motor runs quiet and strong with fantastic suction, and there are no funny noises at all. The body is in great shape; other than a few dings on the rubber bumper, it looks almost new.

Dings on Bumper...

Those dings and marks on the rubber bumper will come off with very little effort if you take a cotton cloth with Mother's Metal Polish on it. You can find it in little tins in the automotive section of your favorite store.

Works a lot like "Vac Polish" but requires far less effort. You can use the same stuff to buff the paint and it'll look brand new when you're finished!

The only problem I can see is that the front and back wheel axles are knocked out of alignment. One of the front wheels rides right off the floor, and one of the back wheels doesn't turn at all. I'm not sure if this happened during shipping, but it shouldn't be a huge problem to fix.

I'm really pleased with this machine. The blower air rushing out makes more noise than the motor. Of course, I wish I had got the hose, attachments, etc, but they'll come in time. For its trial run, I used my 86/88 hose, which only fits loosely and doesn't give full suction, and then I tried the 89 pigtail hose and PN II. I ordered a replacement hose, so I can't wait to unleash the full power of this G!

"Spa" Treatment

Yes indeed, Eric, my next job is to clean this one up. I didn't so much as wipe off the dust when I took the pictures. I've found Magic Eraser to be good for those bumpers too.

Welcome home to Canada, Bob. Not to say that is not also your home. It would be fascinating to hear about a see pictures of how you live in China.

But now you're home home, what a lovely welcoming sight to unbox. The tan G. Yes, you'll have to get a US spec hose coupler for that which should be simple. If you are in desperate need email me and by then I'll know what I can offer up in Amerilux hoses that would match up.

What province of Canada are you in again?

Fellow Canadian Dave.

Another thought. To the best of my recollection the front wheels on a G or similar 5 wheeled Lux are not meant to touch a flat floor - the caster does that job. The front wheels are for decorative balanced effect but also on carpet do make contact and prevent the caster from sinking in to the pile. So, my guess is a back wheel has been bunged up since it will also not turn.

Do let us know the diagnosis - tan G wheels are much easier to find than turquoise G wheels.

Dave

From down east...as far as you can go without falling into t

ocean. I'm from Newfoundland; lived here most of my life until, on a whim, decided to try teaching English in South Korea. From there, it was on to various places in China, marriage, and then...well, let's say that I have 2 homes now. I'll have to dig into the photo archives and see if I have any interesting China pictures. Of course, I have pics of my Chinese vacuums :)

I never realized that about the G front wheels. They do turn freely, so I'll leave them alone. The back, however, is definitely bent up...the wheel won't turn at all, and is almost jammed against the cord winder housing. Could be a "shipping incident".

Thanks Brad. It is beautiful...it must have been either cleaned up and/or restored very well, or used very little. I'd swear it looks and sounds brand new. Its a perfect "American sister/brother" to the 80 series vacs. In fact, they have so many similarities its a little strange to contemplate them side by side.

A real beauty Bob, as I have so often said, IMHO that is Electrolux at it finest!

Sadly, Terry, I have (as yet) limited experience with American machines, but from what I've seen and heard on this site, I'd have to tentatively agree. Other than the XXX and LX, its arguably the most stylish American Lux.

Bob, once you use this vacuum to clean with you will know what I am talking about!!!!

Hi Terry. I tried it out with a Canadian hose and power nozzle, and even with the loose fit, it cleaned very well. I'm looking forward to seeing that new vinyl replacement hose in the mail soon.

Thanks Kenny. I'm happy to have this in my collection, and will be even happier when I can complete the ensemble. I'm doing pretty well on the 60's Canadian Lux lineup, and this is a good start for the 60's American Luxes.

Reinventing the Wheel

The screw that holds the wheel axle in place must have been left in place since the vacuum came out of the factory, because it was a hell of a job to unscrew. Finally it came loose, and I was able to loosen up the wheel and move it away from the cord winder housing. It's still wobbly (the axle is bent), but at least it turns and the vacuum can roll freely across the floor.

This Sucks!

Finally got the US Lux replacement hose the other day, and I have to say its one of the ugliest hoses I've ever seen; kind of a pink/orange/beige mix. However, its brand new, airtight, and very long, in fact, its longer than any of the other hoses I have. After connecting this hose to the G, I have a super quiet, super strong machine. There's a serious danger of the G toppling the Canadian 80 series as my favorite vacuum(s).

The classic Lux slotted metal wands are from the Diplomat, and the beige floor brush from the AP100...the closest vacuum I have to match the G in color.

Bob I knew that you would love using this machine. Your set up there looks really great. Where did you order your hose from?

Post# 71304 , Reply# 18   6/5/2009 at 21:53 (5,437 days old) by sireluxomatic ()

The hose came from an Ebay store called Domestic Services/Vac Shack. It didn't look quite so pink/orange/beige in the pictures; it looked more like a good match for the white trim. Oh well, it does the job just fine.

Once again the Lux looks fabulous, the color of the hose kinda comlements the rest of the machine and the floor tool I think.

Ken:

Up close and personal, the hose is pure peach, although it did turn out pretty good in the picture. Maybe I'll have to dump it in a vat of beige paint :) I'm thinking, though, that it might be a little bit too long for a power nozzle hose cord, whenever I get one. You can see how much longer it is than my other hoses in this picture:

Ahh yes

kenmore81's profile picture
It is long, you are right, that may be a problem with a PN cord.

Trying to fit it all in before the...

rubber hose cord straps break. I tried my model 89 hose cord on the replacement hose, and its ever so slightly too short. It doesn't allow for much slack at the machine end, for the automatic bag door opening function. I'm not sure about the length of the original G hose and cord.

It's so nice to know that we have Canadian vac fans from coast to coast - literally!

Sire......let's see some Chinese vac pics, and maybe Korean too! Whenever you get the chance....

Brian, you just reminded me that I did have a vacuum when in Korea...had completely forgotten about it. It was some kind of stick vac, similar to one of those 1980's Hoover models (I forget the name of these vacs), and it didn't have much more power than a Dustbuster. No wonder I forgot about it and left it there.

As for Chinese vacs, if you go to the "Vacuum Collections" tab on the home page, you can see my entire collection, including the two vacuums I have in China (they're still there). They closely resemble the Electrolux Oxygen in shape and style, and, as far as I know, aren't available outside of China.

It's amazing to see how worldwide Sweden's Electrolux has spread now. There are even Oxygen's being sold in Japan....

"Little Luxes"

That style of Electrolux is really good for countries with huge populations and small houses, and the performance really isn't too bad. The one drawback I can see is that the workmanship (or should I say "workpersonship"?) is not the best...the cord winders, for example, tend to break easily.

Japan...been there 3 times, want to go back for a 4th, and not only to check out the vacuums.

Japanese vacs

eurekaprince's profile picture
Bob....if you want to really have some fun, try searching the internet for vac websites from Japan. Just go to each big Japanese manufacturer's main website and even if you can't read Japanese, try to navigate your way over to the webpage for vacs (try every link...). Each company should end in "co.jp" so for instance Toshiba is toshiba.co.jp.

It's amazing the things they are trying out on vacuums over there! Sanyo recently had a canister vac that recycled the filtered air back up the hose and into the attachments for a second time!

Here's a start: www.toshiba.co.jp/living/cleaners...

Try this with Korean websites too like Samsung!

Sweet indeed. When I first looked at pictures of the 2 Model Gs, I thought the tan/bronze (whatever the official color is) was a little bland looking compared to the in-your-face turquoise. The tan G, however, has a real elegance about it.

I'm still working on completing the ensemble with all the attachments and original hose.
