I found a very bizarre floor polishing attachment on eBay -- I was not gonna bid until I saw that no one else was bidding on or looking at, so I did get it.

It's very old, would have to be for the early Royal straight-suction upright like the Standard or Super Royal, as the front nozzle would have to come off in order to attach it. See photos below. There's a circular neck that attaches into the fan hole in the front and then latches into place. The way the thing is configured, you'd then have to lock the long handle in the lowest position and then turn the machine down so the fan is facing downward, kinda like they used to tell you to do with the Kirby.

When the thing is in place, a shaft inside the neck pushes against the motor fan -- the end of the shaft is a rubber cup that would hold it tight. The rubber is petrified on this one, hard as a rock, but it would still probably work. There's a long, long belt that goes over the shaft and then around the single brush. The belt is like new and would probably still work. In fact, the entire apparatus appears never to have been used.

It has a single brush that is the size of any standard electric floor polisher brush, so it's a pretty little thing. Not something you'd want to use to polish a gymnasium floor with, haha!

It's such a strange and kludgy thing! I could hardly wait to play with it since I had -- I ===thought=== an old straight suction Royal. Well, I went out to the garage and apparently I no longer have one. I had two at one point, I guess I must have given them away at one of the garage clean-ups. (Anyone out there have 'em? Can I have one of them back haha?!)

Seriously, if anyone has an old straight suction Royal that they don't want, I'd love to have it just to try this polisher out.

Does anyone know anything about this, or anyone ever seen one? I talked to Stan Kann about it and he'd "never heard of such a thing."

Inquiring minds want to know --- and they want to play with it, darnit!!!

Speaking of Royal floor polisher attachments, has anyone ever seen an air-powered floor polisher for the Royal Tank? I clearly remember a door-to-door Royal salesman coming to our house when we lived in Virginia and demonstrating a Royal tank machine that was turquoise in color. And he had a round floor polisher attachment for it that he also demonstrated. It sounded very much like the Electrolux attachment. I was of course all enthralled with that, and was quite disappointed when my parents decided not to buy the machine! Anyone have one of these? I'd love to see photos of it.

Photo 7 - I stuck my Scott & Fetzer straight-suction Sanitation System machine on the polisher to show how it attaches. It does not really fit this machine but at least this can give you an idea of how it connects together.

Isn't this just the most bizarre thing?!

Especially when you consider that it would have predated the belt-driven rug cleaner, at least on the Royal!

Great find, Charles. Now all you need is the straight suction Royal or Electro-Hygiene to connect it to. I'd heard of these before, but never saw one.
As for the polisher for the Royal tank, when I was selling Electro-Hygienes we had a couple at the store, but I never saw one in use. I do remember that it was a little larger than the Lux polisher and the brush was somewhat similar to the one on your newly acquired Royal polisher, only larger. It also had a wooden knob that attached to the side to use without the wands as a hand polisher connected only to the hose. However, I never sold one, because for reasons unknown to me, my boss never pushed the polishers for the tank or the optional accessories for the uprights. Looking back, I think there were probably times when it could have made a difference between making a sale or not.
And speaking of polishers, you'll be happy to hear that I recently got one for my Lux XXX, with all the original brushes, in the ORIGINAL BOX!! So, at this point, my XXX is complete with everything my Mom got with hers, except for the instruction book and cord winder!!
