Well, just a few tools, but sometimes it's all about the box!

I spotted this under a table at a garage sale this morning and asked, in a quivering - clutching my pearls voice if she had the vacuum cleaner that went with it. She had given the cleaner to St. Vincent's but forgot to send the box. She didn't want to sell me the box of tools as she intended to drive the box downtown and reunite it with it's rightful cleaner. I assured her that I was on my way downtown (and I really was anyway) and I would complete the set if I could find the cleaner. I paid her $1 for the box and gave her another dollar to donate to St. Vincent's. Of course, when I got downtown, there was no Hoover to be found...

It's really all about the box anyway - I have two of the cleaners already ;-)

Greg...you are SO right...it is all about the box. It always seems that except in a few rare instances that the boxes disappeared years ago. I just love those little old ladies who save everything because you just might have a chance to find the original box tucked away in a corner someplace. Congrats on this find. It is even better that you have a model 63 to go with it!

Don't give up....

Hi,

So I have donated many machines...newer of course over the years...and have found that many times machines will take days, weeks and even months before they will appear on the sales floor.

One machine that I regretted "donating" was a Hoover Floor-A-Matic, the blue and white version, becasue I already had the earlier version that was in the same color scheme of the 1060 Convertible. The machine I kept, after donating the blue and white version started acting up...and while getting parts to fix it....wished I had the later version as my house had alot of hard flooring at that time to take care of.

I donated it to Goodwill in Lansing Mi,and found that by calling them...and noting that a mistake had been made when It was donated..."I told them that it shouldn't have been given" and was a family heriloom thing, and it WAS my late grandmothers ( I know Im a crappy grandson)...yet they were very helpful in finding it...and told me that it had made it to a store of theirs in Battle Creek, which is some 40 odd miles from where it was donated at.

A sidebar- The store that I donated it to is the main warehouse, and drop off site for the organization in Michigan, and therfore many thigs that are donated are seperated and sent elsewhere..not just to the location that you drop it off at...

P.S. Only about four or five days passed between the donation...and the drop-off site. They even called the store and held it for me until I could pick it up that weekend.

Yes, that was very backhanded of me in retrospect....but I really felt at that point that it was my only recourse....and maybe it could work for you. Or at least ask someone in the store it was to go to (uhm, P.S. ask someone, anyone around...who's in charge....not just some volunteer) if it had made it to the location that it was intended for...and maybe they have it in the back.

If you act quickly enough...the machine may still be around..and not uncerimoniously thrown into the garbage like some of these orginizations do with older household goods....

Good Luck

Chad
