I was afraid the Silverado would get lonely. 'Lo 'n behold, I found and won it's older brother on eBay. Below are the eBay pics.

Is there anything better than getting cool vacuums?

Whoohoo!

Now that is a nice looking set. Being from Canada, I never saw the 1205, Olympia, or Silverado until I joined this website, and I marveled at all the different "Super J" colors (the Super J was sold in the Canada during the late 70's, so I had seen a lot of those). :) Congratulations on a nice find.

This is the famous telescopic electric wand with the pushbutton latch that engaged with shallow slots cut in the wand and hose handle - telescopic length settings were locked with the same positive engagement latch that allowed no slippage or rotation, that was introduced by Electrolux Canada for the green 87/89 from 1967-73. It was an huge improvement over the previous red non-electric telescopic brought out for the red 86/88 from 1963-67, which used an external circular friction ring that often let the wands and pn slip off unintended, similar to the well known LuxUSA type of friction ring.

According to Doug Smith the first red telescopic wand was introduced in USA but did not go over well in the marketplace, just as later our microswitch trigger hose handle was judged unacceptable. :-) Up here we love these devices.

I do not know if the 88 had the new latching telescopic in red - only Doug Smith can answer this one. Certainly the green telescopic is rare enough.

Now I have seen pictures of no less than 4 latch electric telescopics in Turquoise for the USA market so this is a new avenue of inquiry...

The first Electrolux Power Nozzle and Wand.

aeoliandave's profile picture
In 1959 the LuxUSA Model AF introduced the Power Nozzle 1 as a new accessory, plugging into a two-pin socket in the side of the F's chrome top trim. The housing and one piece plastic wand were molded in gray to match the AF and did not have an inner steel support wand.

It would seem that Electrolux USA ressurected the Canadian telescopic around 1968 for the 1205, tho the majority I have seen are the non-telescopic plastic sheathed one in Turquoise.

So, John,

It looks like your 1205 is smooth-sided, later the steel was pre-stamped to have a texture that continued I think through-out the run of the metal high-end machines.

When I sold Luxes at the Golden J - Super J period, my branch manager said something like - "Thank goodness for those". Pointing to the 1205. "They kept our service department very busy". "They were lousy machines - broke down all the time". "Made a lot of money for the service guys"! Yet, I sure see a lot of those units still in use and a lot of them on EBay. Mine runs fine too. I have the feeling he may have been mistaken.

I think he may have too, Captain Crevicetool. My Mom's first Lux was a later 1205 with textured finish and PN-2, and we ran that poor soul to death for 16+ years and it never needed any major repairs, only minor stuff like new hoses, belt, etc. And it was still running when it was traded in on a new Marquise model that, while it was an okay machine, was not as reliable as the 1205. Later, Trg

How old is that Lux pictured above? My 1st 1205 has PN-1 2 pc aluminum wands w/slots & wand w/aqua sheath (non-telescopic) aqua electric hose w/curved METAL wand instead of pistol-grip handle. My parents bought it new c. 1970; is the one on pics more delux than mine? I also have the Rug Washer Turbotool & B-8 shampooer in aqua (they also bought it with the vac) I also have a 2nd 1205 w/PN-2 everything still original like the 1st one I have (except hose on 1st 1205 was replaced with beige hose)
Can someone straighten out the 1205's history? Were there variations on 1205s when they were sold (BL, ML, TL) since the 1205 I've had 4 many yrs has approx. 10ft electric hose (I remember my mother vacing living rm w/vac on 'archway' & PN or Turbotool on other end of room) I wonder if the 10ft hose is more elusive (I think its GENUINE but not sure) than telescopic wand

Hi Dave. I have a red plastic telescopic wand similar to the green one except it's non-electric.

I'll try to hunt down a picture of that red telescopic wand soon, but it's the same as the green in every particular, save the electrical connection. Now I'm absolutely lusting after a red/cream PN I and red hose cord to add to the 86/88 :)

As Dave said...

"The Fact Finding, Sharing & Confirmation VCCC Forum at it's best!"

BINGO! And this is what I like on these forums! I save, print this stuff out, and put it in a notebook. This, along with my own notes adds to the fun for me.

That way too, when I go to that great filthy carpet in the sky, the idiot relatives that clean out my place can maybe, by some miracle and/or freak of nature, learn something about the machines they'll probably toss into the dumpster. That is, if they know how to read, or would bother. Truthfully, the situation will probably be them sitting on my couch, drinking my scotch, smoking cigarettes and agreeing amongst themselves how nutz I am.

"All those vacuum cleaners, I knew he was crazy but that takes the cake."

"You said it!"

"Well, thank god it was vacuums he hoarded and not cats."

"I don't know...if it was cats, we wouldn't have been going up and down those damn stairs all the time. We could have just called Animal Control."

"....still pissed he didn't leave a Will. His meager savings will be dried up by Probate in no time. I could have got a bass boat."

"Oh please, divided among us, you'd have be lucky to get a White Castle (1)."

"Hey, that's a good idea...anybody for White Castles?"

"Sure...just after I suck up his ashes into one of these vacuums. We'll toss it in the dumpster on the way. Hey, how about the pink one? He probably would have liked that."

"*snort*...use the one with the long hose...THAT he would have liked.

John

Footnote:

(1) White Castle - a small (2" x 2") type of hamburger with a "unique" taste and, to use the word loosely...very loosely, aroma. A sort of cult thing to do in St. Louis, not to mention a regional ritual after the bars close.

Red Plastic Canadian Lux Telescopic Wand Pictures

I finally dug around in my "archives" (i.e. pictures I've saved of my own vacuums and others found on the web), and found some pics of the red telescopic wand. Wonder of wonders, I even found one that's electric...never knew such a thing existed. This first pic is of my own wand; the others are from Ebay auctions, I believe.

Your pic in post #66271 is the same vacuum I found in our house when I got home from school. I was about 9 years old. The vac salesman had been there in the afternoon and I guess he left it for my mom & dad to think over whether they would buy it. In the end my dad said there was no way he was paying $275 for a vacuum, which included the power nozzle so the salesman came and took it away.

Love the red and two-tone Canadian models.

Yes, Erik, that's a de-moth-er (not sure how to punctuate this correctly), although I've never actually used it as moths don't really seem to be a problem. In fact, I'm not even sure that Aerus sells moth crystals anymore.

Gary, if I was in your place, I would have chained myself to the vacuum :) I wonder, though, how that price compared to other compatible vacuums of the time, and how much it would have been without the power nozzle. Another bit of research to do, I suppose. I do remember, though, that I saw more than a few 86/88's with the green power hose and power nozzle, which I guess means that people upgraded their old machines with the latest model's attachments.

Rick, if you like spicy food, I can send you some from China :)

Bill, I like those colors too, but on the red 88, it seems like they should have made the top of the cordwinder latch chrome to match the chrome band running around the back of the machine. A small point, but it puts me off a little bit.

BTW, I should apologize for veering the thread off track, but that does seem to happen in Vacuumland :)

Hey Dave:

Yes they did make the plastic telescopic wand in red. The last of the 86 / 88 machine run used the cordless version of it for the powernozzle. When the model 87 /89 came out with the new corded telescopic wand they continued to produce the red and cream PN 1's with the now corded wand to be used to retrofit older 80 series machines. If you couldnt sell the home owner a new machine the salesman was surposed to at least sell them on upgrading their old machine with a power nozzle. You also had the option of adding the trigger handgrip which connected to the hose cord (only in the pale green though) with these powernozzles. Unfortunately, it seems the only hose cord in use was the green one at this point.

Actually I think it was a kenmore one. Chatham Fabrics made chests for all the major companies (Electrolux, Filter Queen, Compact, Sears, Eatons, Rexair etc) as well as record chests.

What year was it made? My next door neighbour Mrs French had one in the early 70's.
I never see pictures of it in the POD, was that a Canandian colour combo?
I don't remember hers having a powerhead or the wire running up the hose, maybe she just never used it. She had more hard surfaces and low pile carpet.Mrs French was a 4 foot nothing woman, as tall as she was wide. I can still see her tramping up the stairs with that Lux in her hand. She was a cleaning machine.
