Thank you David Morris! I love your machine. It runs great.

The bag is a little brownish. But it is fine with me. It shows the Kirby logo perfectly.

The metal will get polished up by me. The cord, I will stick with the CIII cord as it is much longer, and I do not want to have to change outlets every once in a while.

Runs like a champ. I do not think I will be able to use anything else.

The bag scares me though! It puffs up sooo much! I did not know these did it that much! It is huge when fully puffed!

kirby

The CIII cord was in because I was testing it.

I found it interesting that the vacuum starts when the switch is up. but on new ones, it is when the switch is down!

Looks very nice Brandon! If you have never tried it before, I like Mothers aluminum metal polish. You can find it at Wal-Mart in the auto section. I also like to use microfiber cloths for polishing. Wear gloves, and I would not recommend doing this indoors. It's very messy!

Post# 64716 , Reply# 12   4/1/2009 at 20:25 (5,496 days old) by brandon_w_t ()
hey

I was actually wondering if you would be interested in doing it for me. I want it to be really nice, I polished my HII and well... it was not very good, and I cant get a good shine on it

I need a buffing wheel. Saw your Sani, i emailed you too.

Post# 64717 , Reply# 13   4/1/2009 at 20:57 (5,496 days old) by jdinstl ()
Brandon...

...that little red thing on the back of the emptor is your Sweet-Aire port, I do believe.

And yes, the switch these was a Kirby quirk. Earlier ones you'd depress the switch, and the vacuum would fire on release of the switch. Later on, the vacuum would fire when the switch was pressed. And the cord is original -- yes, they were grey with red plugs.

Lastly....I've got a nice red hose that will look just lovely with that vac -- drop me an email with your addy, and I'll send it to you. You can have it.

John

(and I'm envious of your gray wheels. My 560 has 3 gray wheels and one brown one....grrrrr)

Glad to See You Finally Got It ...

kirbyclassiciii's profile picture
Brandon,

I am delighted that you finally got your 518! This vac was sold from the spring of 1958 to the winter of 1959 (April 1958 to March 1959, to be exact).

The bag seems to be a later version, which means this is probably one of the later 518s (summer 1958 sales start). On models 519 to the Legend II, pressing the motor switch will instantly run the motor.

Post# 64726 , Reply# 19   4/1/2009 at 21:42 (5,496 days old) by brandon_w_t ()
inside!

All (most) of the attachments. I will get a dust brush from a CIII.

And the crevice tool will get replaced. its a little chewed up. Oh well, I do not use it enough. I will keep it though, as it is original.

What is the clear tube thingy? Demother?

It has the dust nozzle thing too! (sorry for my "thing" terminology. I have no idea what else to call it!)

Your Kirby "Things"

kirbyclassiciii's profile picture
Brandon,

The clear tube is the Crystalator.

It is used to demoth (if you use the crystals and put them inside of it) and the crystal power is drawn through the crevice tool (with brush tip removed) connected to the hose at the blower outlet (where you attach the Sani Em-Tor to).

Dust nozzle thing? Kirby calls it the Utility Air Nozzle. A version with the brush was known as the Utility Brush Nozzle. A Dusting Brush (the rounded one) is also included.

The 519 was the first Kirby in which the hose's collar and suction coupler were made of plastic instead of metal, although the coupler was still detachable until the Dual Sanitronic 50 introduced in 1965.

thanks

But when I said the dust nozzle thing, I ment the thing that you put on the nozzle and use it to dust hard floors, it has a spongy felt side, and you disengage the brush roll (of which mine is original) and slip this on.

If that is what you meant.

lol

As you can see, I am a total newbie to these old kirbys.

2 weeks ago, my oldest vacuum I ever had was the hoover 800 (still is)

3 weeks ago, my oldest vac was a Heritage II.

So as you can see, I have not had much experience.

Post# 64732 , Reply# 24   4/1/2009 at 22:06 (5,496 days old) by swingette ()
My advice...

Don't wash the bag.

Put that bag in a washing machine and you WILL be sorry!

ok

that is what i thought.

thanks for warning me.

Now I need another vac with a hose so I can clean it.

Oh where is that tristar at??

Hehe

This is fun to watch. It does not even move if you push on it.

Its actually hard to get close to things on the right side, as the bag is so big, it sticks farther than the nozzle! lol

Testing- testing- one two there -- testing!

And here is me testing this vacuum.

I first vacuumed both rooms as well as I could with my Vax X5 bagless. Cost me $60. And was a TOL for them.

NOW THAT IS ONE HECK OF A KIRBY!

What a great machine.

Bag and Cord

Brandon if you love using that machine and don't want to mess up the original bag and cord I would suggest picking up a replacement cord to use and keep put the other one aside to preserve it. Also you can pick up the sani-emptors on ebay and install a Kirby replacment bag on it for use to preserve that really nice bag.

Bulb and Book

Brandon I just bought a replacement bulb for my Classic and Dual 50 at the Hardware store today. Two bulbs and CA tax was $4.26 out the door. I have a 518 or 519 book which I am not willing to part with but can scan or copy for you.

Sweet!

I would love to see the manual!

The guy I bought it from told me how cool it was to see the ladys in their dresses and high heels posing with a vacuum. Cheesey but fun.

bulbs

I need a bulb too. What kind does the 518 use?

Post# 65006 , Reply# 38   4/4/2009 at 20:45 (5,493 days old) by tristar ()
Bulb

You can get the bulb at just about any hardware store. They're 125V, 15w and usually marked as a Vacuum Cleaner or "Appliance" bulb. It'll have a brass barrel around it with 2 contacts on the end. They're common as dirt.

That bag shouldn't be hard when the machine is running. If it's hard, it's because the pores are clogged and it's not working as well as it should. You can hand wash it in warm water, although I've successfully washed them in the washer on the delicate cycle. I don't have a modern washer, so I'm sure that has a LOT to do with my success too. No "Shredmore" for me, thanks!

If you wash the bag, be sure to use fabric softener in the final rinse, or when you wash it with clear water in the sink (depending on how you're washing it). It'll make the fabric softer and it will actually filter better. If the bag is washed well, you won't see dust escape when you thump it while the machine is running.

Post# 65010 , Reply# 39   4/4/2009 at 21:00 (5,493 days old) by brandon_w_t ()
Umm... not going that direction

Sorry, its far to risky to wash these bags. Not happening.

I may turn it inside out, and vacuum it. But its not getting washed in a washer.

Its not really rock solid, I kind of exaggerated that. But it is like above- the bag stays upright when on, and not connected to the handle.

Post# 65011 , Reply# 40   4/4/2009 at 21:11 (5,493 days old) by tristar ()

So wash it in the sink. I wash these bags all the time and haven't ever had a problem. Even my 561 bag went through the washer. All that came off of it was enough dirt and lint to choke the filter basket in the washer. The decal on the bag is surprisingly stout on the Kirby bags. They don't wash off like the Hoover bags do.

I love the 500 series Kirbys, as well as the D-50, D-80, Classic and Classic III. All great machines! And so nice of Dave to give it to you! Looks like polishing it should be an easy job, as it already looks pretty nice. Just a little Mother's Mag and some terrycloth towels and you're all set! Congratulations,
Jeff
